As promised, before five o'clock Mrs. Go was knocking on Ashley's door again.
They said they were giving her time to rest. But before that she had been buried with a pile of big problems first.
So how could she rest?
Even just lying down and closing her eyes was impossible. Her head ached from the effects of the journey as well as being overwhelmed by the sentences written in the document. Meanwhile, her body continued to move restlessly with a sense of anxiety that she could not describe the excruciating sensation.
After trying to lie down for almost half an hour and failing, Ashley got up and sat down again. Her eyes stared at the front cover of the folder and drifted into a blank reverie.
Her head did feel full. But something inside didn't take shape at all. Everything was abstract and hard to decipher.
Yet, she was not considering anything. Because there was nothing for her to consider. Everything her parents proposed was an order and a threat, not an offer. There was no way for her to choose to refuse or retreat. The only thing she could do was agree to it.
And also, this was no longer about the shares that were rightfully hers as part of the Song family. But something much bigger to save her biological mother. To keep that woman from death.
Because, how could she be the cause of her mother's death just because she refused to marry someone? She would surely condemn herself to a lifetime of misery if she did that.
Ashley knew she would eventually have to sign the document. But she still hadn't done it. The special ballpoint and her personal stamp still lay on the table untouched.
Perhaps, she just didn't want to rush through her parents' wishes.
Or perhaps, she was deliberately buying time to wait for a miracle of some kind that could save her from the trap her parents had set for her.
She continued to sit there for several hours. Only when she could no longer bear the fatigue and exhaustion, she forced her body to move to the bathroom and immerse herself in the cold water for as long as possible—enough to shed all the weight hanging on her shoulders.
She even lingered to pick out her clothes and apply some light make-up. Even though she knew they would still remove it to reproach her. And her clothes wouldn't be used either because her mother always organized all the clothes she wore—like years ago when she lived in that house.
She did it just to pass the time, to occupy her mind with something else. The makeup she carefully applied, meanwhile, was meant to make her look less miserable.
When Mrs. Go came in, Ashley was already prepared and was sitting on the balcony of her room. Looking at the back garden that looked very different from the last time she was there. Perhaps, her mother had changed the landscape design a dozen times after that. Perhaps, the garden even wanted to be demolished, as her mother had told her back then—on the day of her grandfather's death.
“Miss, are you ready?”
Ashley let out her breath. Ready or not, she still had to go, right?
“Yes,” her voice sounded weak. She replied as she got up and went inside her room.
“Can I have the documents now?” Mrs. Go tried to speak carefully and in a tone of voice that didn't make the girl who had been in her care for the past twenty five years feel even more upset.
Ashley spontaneously turned her head towards her study table. The documents, ballpoint, and her personal stamps were still there. Mrs. Go also immediately followed her line of sight.
“Can I sign it later?”
Mrs. Go cast a doubtful look.
"I know I have to agree to it. But I just don't want to do it now. They gave me no reason to refuse, Mrs. Go,“ her expression became flat, tired, and cold, ”Just like they've been doing to me all this time."
Mrs. Go was stunned. She felt like she could swallow the bitterness that Ashley was experiencing.
"Yes. I will convey it to Madame Song as best I can."
Ashley smiled, “Thank you.”
At the salon, she was greeted by Mrs. Ji—the owner of the luxurious salon that her big family had become accustomed to.
"Look at you, Ms. Song. It's been a few years and you've grown into a girl many times more beautiful," the woman spoke as she ushered her into a special VVIP room. Her face was always smiling with the same cheerful squeaky tone that she remembered. A businesswoman who knew how to serve her top clients with a sprinkling of hospitality and sweet words. "Not that I'm saying you weren't beautiful before. Oh, no, no. To me, you are the late Chairman Song's most beautiful and kindest granddaughter. My favourite."
Then her laughter erupted elegantly.
"But this is a secret between us. Don't tell your cousins. They'll get more sassy with me if they know how I truly feel."
Ashley smiled widely, "Of course, Mrs. Ji. I'm not close with them anyway."
Mrs. Ji nodded with relief. She then directed Ashley to sit on one of the makeup chairs and started cleaning her face.
"My senior assistants, I have long entrusted them to handle your family, even without my supervision. But it feels like this time I want to do your makeup with my own hands. You're finally going to get married and live forever in this country. Consider this your welcoming gift, okay?"
Ashley glanced at Mrs. Ji who was standing next to her through the mirror in front of them.
“Even you knew that I was getting married,” She flashed a faint grin. Somehow her surprise right now seemed insignificant. "I only found out this afternoon. Right after I landed and got home."
Mrs. Ji was surprised by the information that had just entered her ears. She automatically glanced at Mrs. Go who was sitting expressionlessly on the sofa behind them. Then without thinking, she said again, "Then, I'll let you choose the type of makeup you want, Miss. Anything at all. Even the strangest one, I'll grant it."
Ashley giggled, while Mrs. Go gasped and instantly looked wary.
"Can you cover my tired face? I didn't get a chance to rest today. I can't disappoint my mom after all."
“Ah—” Mrs. Ji exhaled in disappointment. "If that's your wish, fine. I'll transform you into a princess tonight. I'm sure your future husband will be mesmerized and dream of you."
Ashley just smiled in response. She honestly didn't care. Whatever impression the man would get, it wouldn't change the fact that they would still end up getting married.
Unless, the man himself rejected this marriage.
That was the idea that had crossed Ashley's mind earlier this afternoon. That made her read all the articles of the agreement over and over again, to make sure there was a loophole that could make her escape from her parents' ruthless scenario.

Ashley wore a pale pink velvet dress above the knee with a blazer that was two shades darker.
Mrs. Go escorted her to the entrance to help confirm the reservation made in her young lady's name. Ashley was then escorted inside by one of the staff to a table by the window.
She saw a man already seated there. And when she was standing just a step away, he looked up. Upon noticing her presence, he stood up while flashing her a smile.
Ashley, already satiated by the many surprises she had swallowed today, became even more confused by what she was facing.
Memories of the past that she had long ago discarded now reappeared vividly before her eyes. Bringing flashes of a story that was unfinished—because it had not yet begun.
“Hi,” he greeted her in a soft, polite voice.
Ashley didn't realize she hadn't blinked because she was too absorbed in her shock. At the same time, she was too distrustful of her own vision. But her eyes were fine, and what she saw was no illusion.
That's right, he was that person.
Josh.
Joshua Lim.

Ashley was speechless. She was only able to stare at her mother who walked away fiercely. Even until the woman disappeared behind the majestic main door, she still looked there. It was as if the empty air had left a trace of her mother's sadism. It was only when the silhouette of Mrs. Go re-entering the house filled her vision that she came to her senses and quickly returned to the pages of documents. Her eyes twitched furiously as she continued the last sentence she had left. Her head lowered deeply to read it more clearly. As if to make sure all the series of letters he saw were not mere illusions.Word by word, sentence by sentence. Ashley read, combined, and deduced the meaning of everything written there. She forced her focus to be fully devoted to understanding all the articles of the agreement without misinterpreting them.“Miss,” Mrs. Go leaned over slightly to interrupt Ashley's focus, “I'll get a pen and your personal stamp.”“W-wait a minute,” Ashley suddenly raised her pal
ASHLEY’S SECOND RETURN—FLASHBACK“You've finally home. Sit down. And read this,” Ashley’s mother commanded as soon as she saw her daughter’s arrival at the house.Ashley had literally just arrived from a long flight from Auckland to Korea. Although she knew her days ahead would not be as easy as before, since the trip from the airport the only thing in her plan was that she could immediately sleep and relax her muscles that had been very stiff.Of course, that plan didn't come out of nowhere. She landed during the daytime. So it was obvious that neither of her parents were home during that time. That's why she dared to make such a plan. Especially when Mrs. Go, her assistant, said that she didn't have anything scheduled that afternoon. The most likely time she would see her parents was at dinner. It was then that she would probably know the exact reason she was called home—after a very long period of time, after all those long years she was sent away from home for the second time.Suc
Ashley regained her self-control after letting her emotions out through crying in one of the restaurant's private dining rooms. The crying was quite intense. But she did her best to muffle her voice, until all she could hear was a low, stifled shriek. Her tears overflowed. Her chest was tight. And her eyes were swollen after all the turmoil she had let out until there was nothing left. It was as if all the inner wounds that she had been suppressing, spilled out all at once without mercy.Someone might have heard her from outside. The waitress passing by might also want to go in and check the noise she was making. But Ashley couldn't hold back the explosion of anger and sadness that was clogging up her chest. She didn't even care about manners or shame anymore. After a while, she cleaned her face and slightly fixed her light makeup before exiting the room. Although the polish still couldn't cover her red and very puffy eyes. She took a deep breath before pushing open the door, hoping t
That afternoon, Ashley couldn't even look her parents in the face. The atmosphere between them became even more tense after Ashley went back inside, when she told them that Josh suddenly couldn't make it.“So, he's not coming anymore?” Ashley’s mother asked while stirring the soup that was already halfway in her small bowl."Yes. But it's not just because of his will. Suddenly there are a lot of urgent things he needs to get done for the launch of his project."Even when Ashley tried to convince her parents that Josh sounded really sorry for not being able to come and that what was preventing him was really office business that couldn't be left unattended, her mother's face just looked even more disgusted.Ashley was terrified that her lie would be caught, so she continued to earnestly try to tell all sorts of other lies, whatever came to mind, just to convince and lessen her parents' annoyance."That's twice already. How many more times do I have to tolerate his disrespectful behavio
Somun held his stomach as he tried to stop laughing. "Okay, okay. So what's your great plan?""I'll pretend to kill myself... But not pretend. Pretend, but not fake," Sharon tried to emphasize her most important point. “So, I'm going to really cut myself, but not so deep that I can't actually die.” she automatically demonstrated the motion of slicing her wrist with the knife she was holding. "That's why I need you here. You're in charge of taking me straight to the hospital as soon as I cut myself so that I can get medical attention quickly. After that, you also have to tell Josh that I'm in serious condition. Since he won't pick up my calls at all, you'll have to send word through his office phone. How?" Sharon's eyes looked serious as she explained her plan.Somun, however, went from underestimating it to thinking it was total nonsense. Because there was also a hint of worry that suddenly came to him."Crazy! The risk is too great. What if you really die before reaching the hospital
Sharon walked back and forth in her spacious living room with her cell phone held firmly in her hand. Occasionally, she frowned as she checked her silent cell phone. Then she walked back and forth again around the room. Checking the time of day, pacing again while seemingly deep in thought, and checking her cell phone again for the umpteenth time. But her messages and incoming calls remained the same as before. There was absolutely nothing new.Worst of all, her face would grow a thousand times more sour every time her outgoing calls went unanswered, and none of her messages were read by the recipient—Josh.“Wow, this is funny,” Somun, who was sitting casually with his legs crossed, was confused by Sharon's behavior. "You sent me here just to see you acting... walking back and forth like that? You think I don't have more important things to do than just watching you do weird things like this?" His tone was high with annoyance.Sharon only glared at the man briefly, then growled angril
“Sir,” a voice sounded in the distance. “Sir, excuse me, sir,” the voice came closer and clearer. “Sir!” then it sounded louder and more firm in his ears.Josh was shocked because when he opened his eyes he saw Mr. Jung—his secretary—looking at him in the face.Josh gasped and tried to sit up. He lifted his head and lowered his legs that had been bent overnight. His neck was stiff because he had fallen asleep on the short sofa in his office, so his head bent uncomfortably.“Are you staying here, Sir?” Mr. Jung looked surprised from the expression on his face. "Today we have a morning meeting with all the divisions.” The man immediately recited Josh's schedule report—as if it was automatic because it had become a habit in doing his work. “Are you going home first to get ready? Would you like me to make you some coffee?“Josh rubbed his eyes and massaged his forehead. ”I don't think so. I'll just take a shower here. When is the meeting?""It's still about two hours away. I was going to
At that moment, Sharon was sitting on the edge of the bed looking at him with a panicked look in her eyes. She was only wearing an inner blouse with the outer—she had been wearing when she met Josh this afternoon—lying by the door, near Josh's feet. And there was no denying that Sharon's hair was a mess. Other than that, Josh couldn't afford to wander any further to check what else was wrong in the room.Even when he saw the silhouette of another man leaning against the window while busy putting on his shirt, Josh averted his eyes and turned away. He walked with very heavy and unsteady footsteps and sat down on the sofa in the living room.Sharon, with panic filling her whole being, glared at that man while whispering to him to tidy up quickly and get out.Her hands haphazardly adjusted all her clothes, brushed her hair casually, and wiped her lips carelessly. She did everything as quickly as possible just to avoid looking like a real mess, while running after Josh. She immediately sa
