"One bed. Are you kidding me?" Julian stared at the wooden frame as if it were a biohazard. "There’s literally nowhere else to sleep. Not even a chair."

Leo dropped his bag, the heavy thud vibrating through the floorboards. "It’s a rustic retreat, Jules. They don’t cater to prima donnas who need a king-sized mattress and a thread count higher than their IQ."

"Don't call me that. And I’m not sleeping in the same bed as you. I’d rather sleep in the trunk of the car."

"Go ahead. It’s freezing out there. You’ll be a popsicle by midnight, and I’ll be the one explaining to the studio why their leading man died of exposure." Leo kicked off his boots, his movements annoyingly graceful. "Take the floor if you want. It’s hardwood and probably infested with spiders. Your choice."

Julian paced the small, suffocating space. "This is sabotage. Halloway set us up."

"Halloway set us up for a PR win. If the fans see us 'getting back to nature' in a cozy little cabin, the gossip columns will go feral. Which reminds me—" Leo reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone.

"What are you doing?" Julian asked, his voice tightening.

"We have to post, Julian. The contract. Remember? 'Joint social media activity.' Smile." Leo held the phone up, angling it so the romantic, flickering light of the fireplace hit their faces perfectly.

"I’m not doing this. I look like I’ve been through a war."

"Exactly. 'Cozying up after a long day of filming.' It’s the perfect narrative. Now, get in the frame."

Julian scowled, but he stepped into the light, his body stiff. Leo leaned in, his arm sliding around Julian’s waist. The grip was tight, his hand possessive, pressing Julian against his side.

"Stop grabbing me like I’m a prop," Julian hissed through his teeth, keeping his smile frozen and fake.

"Stop acting like a plank of wood," Leo whispered back. "Look at the camera, look happy, and tilt your head toward me. We need the 'longing' look."

"I hope the phone dies."

"Three, two, one." Leo tapped the screen. "Perfect. I’ll tag you as 'my favorite place to be.' The comments are going to lose their minds."

Julian pulled away as soon as the phone clicked, wiping his arm as if Leo’s touch had left a chemical burn. "You’re disgusting. You realize you’re the worst person I’ve ever met, right?"

"And yet, here you are, standing in the same room. You’re addicted to the friction, Jules. Admit it."

"I’m addicted to not being blacklisted. There’s a difference."

"Is there? Your pulse says otherwise."

The wind groaned outside, a low, mournful sound that rattled the windowpanes. Suddenly, the cabin plunged into total darkness. The amber glow of the fireplace died as the draft snuffed it out, and the power grid—feeble at best—gave up entirely.

"Great," Julian muttered, the word sharp in the sudden, absolute silence. "Now we don’t even have light."

"It’s not just the lights," Leo said, his voice closer now. "The heating just cut out. Can you hear that?"

"Hear what? The sound of my sanity snapping?"

"The silence. It’s getting cold. Fast."

Julian shivered involuntarily. The temperature in the mountains plummeted the moment the sun went down. "We need to find the fuse box."

"In the dark? In a cabin we've never been to? Good luck, Indiana Jones." Leo’s voice was devoid of its usual mocking bite, replaced by a strange, low gravity. "The bedroom is the only place with blankets. Real ones. Thick ones."

"I’m not getting into bed with you, Leo. I don’t care if I freeze."

"Don't be a martyr. It’s pathetic." A match flared, casting long, dancing shadows against the walls. Leo held it up, his face illuminated from below, his eyes dark and unreadable. "It’s ten degrees outside. The floor is going to turn into an ice block within the hour. Just get under the covers. Keep your clothes on, keep your distance, but stop acting like a child."

Julian hesitated. His breath was already misting in the air. The chill was creeping into his bones, numbing his fingers. He looked at the bed, then back at the small, flickering flame in Leo’s hand.

"Fine," Julian snapped. "But if you try anything, I’ll kill you."

"I’d be disappointed if you didn’t."

They climbed into the bed, a massive, archaic thing with a heavy quilt. Julian curled onto the far edge, pulling as much fabric as he could manage toward his side, leaving a vast, empty expanse of mattress between them.

The cold was relentless. It wasn't just the air; it was the isolation. Minutes dragged by, marked only by the sound of the wind thrashing the pines outside. Julian’s teeth began to chatter, a dry, rhythmic clicking he couldn't suppress.

"You’re shivering," Leo’s voice came from the dark, quiet and startlingly close.

"I’m fine," Julian lied, his voice trembling.

"You’re not. You’re vibrating."

"I said I’m fine."

"Julian, stop it. You’re going to get hypothermia just to prove a point to a man you hate." A rustle of fabric, and then Julian felt the mattress shift. Leo moved, closing the distance, his body heat radiating outward like a furnace.

"Don't," Julian warned, but his protest lacked any real conviction.

"It’s survival," Leo whispered, his voice right next to Julian’s ear. He didn't just lean in; he pressed his back against Julian’s chest, his own warmth acting as a barrier against the arctic air. "Just stay still. We need to conserve heat."

Julian felt the heat blooming where their bodies touched. It was dangerous—it was the exact opposite of what he wanted—but his body betrayed him, leaning into the warmth instinctively.

"You’re an idiot," Julian breathed.

"And you’re freezing." Leo shifted, reaching back to tuck the edge of the heavy quilt more securely around Julian’s shoulders. His fingers brushed against Julian’s neck, the touch lingering for a fraction of a second too long.

The tension in the room shifted. It wasn't the performative tension of the set anymore; it was something raw, electric, and terrifyingly present. The wind howled, rattling the cabin walls, and in the sudden, violent gust that shook the building, Julian lost his balance.

He tumbled backward, his arms flailing, and landed hard against Leo’s chest.

Leo didn't pull away. He grabbed Julian by the waist, flipping them both so they were face-to-face, locked in the suffocating darkness. The proximity was absolute. Julian could feel the steady, rhythmic thud of Leo’s heart against his own ribcage.

"Leo," Julian started, his voice a ghost of a sound.

"Don't talk," Leo whispered, his lips brushing against Julian’s skin.

The world narrowed down to the scent of cedar, the cold air, and the heat rising between them. Julian didn't know if it was anger or something else that drove him, but he tilted his head, his breath hitching.

Leo didn't hesitate. He surged forward, his mouth catching Julian’s in a collision that wasn't a performance. It was hungry, desperate, and completely, utterly real. Julian gasped, his hands tangling into the front of Leo’s shirt, pulling him closer, effectively shattering every boundary they had spent the last two days trying to maintain.

The kiss deepened, frantic and clumsy, before suddenly freezing mid-motion as the cabin light suddenly buzzed, flickered, and hummed back to life, flooding the room with a harsh, unforgiving glare.

Julian yanked back, eyes wide, breath ragged, staring at Leo with a mixture of horror and shock—only to realize the cabin door was creaking open, and someone was standing in the threshold.

The echoes of Halloway’s heels faded into the dark, leaving behind a silence that felt like a held breath. Julian stood frozen, his eyes glued to the spot where she had vanished."She’s literally watching us from the shadows now, isn't she?" Julian whispered, his voice trembling.Leo didn't look toward the exit. He kept his gaze locked on Julian, his jaw tight. "Let her watch. If she wants a show, we’ll give her a grand finale.""Are we actually doing this? Total transparency? That’s not a plan, Leo; that’s professional suicide.""Being her puppets was a slow death, Jules. I’d rather go out in flames than spend another year on her leash.""You’re okay with losing everything? The lead roles, the contracts, the status?"Leo stepped closer, closing the distance until their chests almost touched. "I’ve been 'Leo Thorne' for years. I don’t even know if I like the guy. I’d trade every single trophy on my shelf to wake up one morning without looking over my shoulder."Julian searched his eye

The security guards ushered them into the mahogany-paneled office like two condemned men walking toward the gallows. Julian’s heart was hammering against his ribs, but he caught Leo’s gaze—a flicker of defiance that told him they were far from finished.Halloway tossed the tablet onto her desk and poured herself a drink. "Sit. Both of you. You look like you’re about to pass out.""I’d rather stand," Julian said, his voice cold. "And I’d rather know why you think a board-approved embezzlement scheme makes you untouchable.""It makes me a partner," Halloway said, taking a slow sip. "It makes me necessary. But keep talking. I love watching you two try to grasp the scale of the game you’re playing."Leo pulled out a chair and sat, leaning back with a lazy, dangerous grin. "Necessary? Or just convenient? The board wouldn't be too happy if the public found out their 'Golden Boy' and 'Action Hero' were being used as money laundering conduits."Halloway didn't flinch. "Try to sell that headli

Halloway’s smile wasn't a smile; it was a guillotine. She stood in the mouth of the alley, the blue light of her phone screen casting harsh, sickly shadows over her features."Caught you," she purred, her voice dripping with clinical satisfaction.Julian stepped back, his heel scraping against the wet pavement. "How long have you been standing there?""Long enough to hear the revolutionary manifesto," Halloway said, walking closer. Her heels clicked with rhythmic, terrifying precision. "So. 'Writing your own script'? That’s cute. Did you honestly think you were the first pair of vanity-projects to try and dig into the agency's server?"Leo didn't move. He stood in front of Julian, his shoulders squared. "We weren't digging, Halloway. We were just catching our breath after your little ‘crowd control’ experiment went sideways.""My experiment?" Halloway raised an eyebrow. "You’re the ones who signed the contracts. You’re the ones who made the brand worth millions. If the fans get a litt

"An engagement? Are you out of your mind?" Julian dropped the documents as if they were scorching hot.Halloway didn't blink. "It’s not a request, Julian. It’s a survival tactic. The studio wants a permanent anchor to this story. You sign, or your career is effectively vaporized by tomorrow morning’s news cycle."Leo leaned forward, his voice a low, mocking growl. "She’s not kidding, Jules. Look at the terms. They’re offering a ten-point back-end bonus if we deliver the 'ring' by Sunday.""I don't care about the money! This is insane. We can’t just announce an engagement to a public that thinks we’re an 'it' couple because of a few staged photos.""The public already thinks you’re in love," Halloway cut in, her tone surgical. "The engagement is just the period at the end of the sentence. Now, get out. The premiere for Shadows of Valor is in an hour. Dress the part, act the part, or don’t bother showing up."Julian stared at the closed door of the SUV. "I feel like I’m being groomed fo

"They saw everything," Julian repeated, his voice barely a whisper as he stared at the pixelated image of them on the verge of that kiss. "We’re done. This is the end. Halloway is going to hang us from the rafters."Leo didn't panic. He just swiped the phone screen away and leaned back against the leather seat, his jaw set in a hard, dangerous line. "Relax, Jules. It’s not a kiss. It’s ‘stolen intimacy.’ The public loves a forbidden moment. If anything, this just made us more expensive.""Expensive? Leo, people are calling us frauds! Look at the comments section. 'Toxic,' 'Calculated,' 'Fake as a three-dollar bill.' We’re trending for all the wrong reasons.""Let them talk. Attention is currency. You want to stay relevant? You ride the wave.""I want to stay employed, not be the laughingstock of Hollywood."The SUV lurched as it hit a pothole, throwing them briefly together. Julian braced his hands against the center console, keeping a rigid distance. "We have that joint interview wit

"What the hell are you doing here?" Julian scrambled backward, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. The silhouette in the doorway didn't move. It was just a delivery driver, looking confusedly at the illuminated cabin."Uh, groceries? The agency sent them over. Is everything okay in here?" the delivery guy asked, peering past the blinding light."Everything is fine," Leo said, his voice terrifyingly steady. He didn't even glance at Julian. He stepped forward, taking the crate from the man. "Leave it on the porch. We’re busy.""Right. Sorry about the, uh, interruption," the guy muttered, backing away into the night. The door slammed shut. The latch clicked. Julian felt the air leave his lungs. He stared at Leo’s back, his face burning with a heat that had nothing to do with the thermostat."You were going to kiss me," Leo said, his back still turned. It wasn't a question."I was not. I was disoriented. The light—it was a reaction to the sudden brightness."Leo turn
