Chapter 2

作者: Moaning Mess
After we arrived and put our luggage away, I stepped outside and saw Gwen and Joanna chatting and laughing together. As soon as they noticed me, their expressions shifted, and they quickly stepped apart.

"Gwen, what were you and Ms. White talking about?" I asked. "You looked really happy."

"It's nothing. She came to get us for dinner. We were just making small talk."

During dinner, my fork fell, and I bent down to pick it up. Under the table, I saw a pair of slim, fair legs spreading slightly as a pair of large, dark feet rubbed up and down between them.

Across from me sat Joanna. I vaguely remembered that the person sitting next to her was a middle-aged man traveling alone. Then a hand suddenly dropped onto her thigh and slowly slid under her clothes.

"Darling, did you lose your fork?" Gwen asked, lightly tapping my shoulder.

Everything across from me came to a sudden halt.

I sat up with my fork in hand, pretending I hadn't noticed anything as I continued my conversation with Gwen.

After all, it would have been far too awkward if I had been caught noticing something like that. We were all in the same tour group for the next few days and would keep running into each other. It was better to keep things polite on the surface.

I had assumed Joanna and that man were just indulging in a bit of excitement. But when I looked up and saw Joanna silently crying, her eyes red, I realized something was wrong.

I hadn't meant to get involved in anyone else's affairs. If it didn't concern me, I would have stayed out of it. But then two things happened that changed my mind.

The first came after dinner, when Gwen suddenly told me that Joanna was her cousin.

I stared at her in shock. "Why didn't you tell me that earlier?"

I had just witnessed my wife's cousin doing something inappropriate on the bus, and then she was taken advantage of during dinner. What on earth was going on?

"I forgot to tell you earlier. I only just remembered that you didn't know. Darling, keep an eye on Joanna for the next few days. She's still young, and being a tour guide isn't exactly safe.

"Since we're here, we should help her out. I came on this trip mainly to see how this job is working out for her parents. If it doesn't work, she'll need to switch to something else."

At her words, I pursed my lips.

What could Joanna possibly do? She was constantly being taken advantage of. Tonight's dinner was a clear case of it.

I considered telling Gwen everything I had seen, but at the last second, I hesitated and held myself back. I had already promised Joanna I wouldn't tell anyone. If Gwen found out and let it slip, it would be far too awkward to face Joanna afterward.

"Take these to Joanna," Gwen said, handing me several jars. "They're specialties from home. I brought them on purpose. While you're at it, take the time to explain things to her properly.

"I haven't seen her in a long time, so she probably doesn't even recognize me. I also didn't tell her in advance that I'd be joining her tour group either. Her parents only just called her, so she should only now be realizing who we are."

She shoved the jars into my hands and pushed me out the door.

The second thing happened the moment I stepped outside.

Without saying anything, Joanna grabbed me and urgently led me toward her room. Before I could react, she suddenly broke down in tears.

"Duncan, please. Don't tell my cousin or my parents. If they find out, they'll make me quit this job. If I had known you and Gwen were coming, I never would have done any of that. Please don't tell them, okay?"

I looked helplessly at Joanna, who was crying uncontrollably in front of me.

I hadn't even said anything yet.

"Let me be frank with you, Duncan. I've been transferring our savings into another account for years now. So what if you force me to sign this divorce agreement? How much money do you think you'll have left?" Gwen exclaimed, cackling as she threw the divorce agreement to the floor.I quietly looked at her, waiting to see if she had other tricks up her sleeve. It seemed that she had been bottling up her emotions for a long time, prompting her to spout whatever came to mind now that she had a chance to vent her frustrations. Or perhaps she believed that she would emerge victorious in our conflict."I started cheating on you a long time ago, Duncan Reed. I don't think that there's a single person in the world who can put up with someone like you. You're so obsessed with your work that you just forget everything else. Work always comes first."You can't even satisfy my needs, so why would I want to keep you around? To tell you the truth, I planned to set you up to cheat on me during th

I didn't hesitate as I picked up the bat and walked toward the bed. I grabbed a fistful of the man's hair and threw him off the bed. I then pinned him to the floor and punched his face over and over again.I got up and grabbed the bat again, repeatedly bringing it down on him while also kicking his groin nonstop."Duncan, please! Please have mercy on him! I'm begging you!"At some point, Gwen had grabbed my leg, doing everything she could to stop me. I didn't feel even an ounce of sympathy for her, even though she was crying pitifully.I emotionlessly shoved her aside and continued to take out my anger on the man.Just then, I felt something wrap around my waist and pull me backward.I looked down to see Joanna."You shouldn't escalate the situation, Duncan. Someone has already called the police. You need to deal with that first. We can talk about the rest later."She gestured for me to look at the door, where a crowd of tourists had gathered. She then snatched the bat from me

"Someone tried to assault me just now!" Gwen cried. "He tried to drag me into the grove. I don't know what would've happened to me if you hadn't shown up. If you hadn't kept calling me, and if my assaulter hadn't heard your approaching footsteps, I probably would have been…"Tears rolled down Gwen's face.My resolve wavered a little as I looked at her teary countenance.Did Gwen really cheat on me? Did she really come here to meet her lover? It was my first time seeing her cry her heart out, even though we had known each other for many years. Even if she was just trying to cover up what she was doing, there was no need for her to sob and wail like that.I softly comforted Gwen and didn't say anything else as I brought her back to the hotel. After calming her down, I immediately returned to the grove. Following the path that she took, I found a store nearby and checked their surveillance cameras. It was a good thing that I had decided to be cautious. If I hadn't, Gwen would have s

I looked at Joanna, who was explaining something to the group, with mixed feelings. I still had no idea what role she was playing in all of this. However, I also understood that my top priority now was to find some dirt on Gwen. I could deal with Joanna later.I stuck to Gwen like glue. No matter where she went, I followed. Even when she went to the restroom, I stood guard at the door."Darling, why have you been following me around all day?" Gwen asked with a hint of annoyance when she emerged from the restroom and saw me by the door."I'm just making sure you're safe," I casually replied, wondering when Joanna's "surprise" would show up. I didn't think Gwen could slip away right under my nose when I was watching her that closely, yet she did. I scanned the surroundings, but her figure had completely disappeared. I had a feeling she had definitely gone to meet her lover. I pulled out my phone and booted up the tracking app to check Gwen's location. She was moving fast and was

"You're a good man."I thought Joanna was just making an offhand remark, but her next words threw me off."Duncan, you should keep an eye on Gwen and the others. Perhaps what happened today wasn't just about wanting a child."Before I could press her for more details, she shut the door. Joanna's words completely upended my original plan. I had initially intended to confront Gwen, lay everything out on the table, settle the division of assets, and get a divorce. However, what if she had another motive behind all this? By doing that, wouldn't I be walking straight into her trap?To be honest, after five years of marriage, I didn't want to suspect my wife. Yet, she had changed so drastically, almost as if she had become a completely different person. While I was still hesitating, I received two videos from an unknown number. Either one of them would have been enough to crush me.One of them was a video of Gwen having an affair. In the footage, she was wild and uninhibited; it

"Darling, stop struggling," Gwen said. "I went out of my way to find this incense specifically to prevent you from doing exactly what you're doing now. It even contains some aphrodisiacs. I'm doing this for the sake of our happiness, so don't blame me.""How are you going to explain this to Joanna's parents? She's your cousin! How could you do this to her?" I fumed, glaring at Gwen. I seriously couldn't wrap my head around how my gentle and sensible wife had turned into this madwoman. Gwen didn't answer me. After flashing me a mysterious smile, she opened the bedroom door. Joanna stood outside, looking confused. Gwen suddenly grabbed her, pulled her into the room, and then rushed out before locking the door from the outside. "What's going on, Duncan? What is Gwen doing?" Joanna asked meekly, shrinking back in the corner. My breathing grew heavy, and I was struggling to catch my breath. I tried to stay conscious and stand up, but my body gave out, and I collapsed onto the bed.
