Chapter 2

Author: Washing Wheat
With Adeline's help, I finally managed to get into the passenger seat. I had just fastened my seat belt when a runaway truck came hurtling toward us.

I had no time to dodge. All I could do was shove Adeline away with everything I had.

In the end, I was trapped inside the wreckage myself. Almost immediately, warmth spread between my legs, and I felt my baby slipping away.

I trembled, desperate to scream for help. Tears blurred my vision, yet I couldn't make a sound.

In the haze of unconsciousness, I heard Adeline's frantic sobs and Elliot Caldwell's voice.

"Stop messing around, Adeline!" Elliot barked. "So, anytime I'm with Veronica, you just make up whatever lies you want?

"A car accident? Seriously? You're ridiculous. Do you have any idea how rare something like that even is?

"I'm warning you. Stay away from that crazy best friend of yours! Don't start getting jealous like her. Veronica's hurt right now, and I'm in the middle of dressing her wounds. Stop bothering me!"

Eventually, passersby called the police and an ambulance, and Adeline and I were rushed to the hospital.

Although Adeline and I survived, both of us lost our babies forever.

I looked at Adeline as she clutched her phone tightly. The surgery had drained the color from her face.

"I'm sorry. I never thought Elliot could really stand by and do nothing," she said, tears streaming down her face.

I needed emergency surgery after losing too much time. It was a high-risk procedure that only Elliot could perform.

However, he was convinced that Adeline was simply jealous of Veronica. He dismissed it as a lie and blamed her for everything instead.

In the end, my uterus had to be removed. I would never be able to have children of my own again.

I let out a sigh. Just as I was about to speak, Elliot's call came through.

"Have you lost your mind? A car accident yesterday, and now you're telling me you had a miscarriage? What's next? Are you going to jump off a building tomorrow?

"Worse, you've learned to threaten me with divorce. Birds of a feather truly flock together. You've picked up nothing but bad habits from Emilia!"

Elliot went on, "If it weren't for the fact that I still have to change Veronica's bandages today, I'd come teach you both a lesson!

"Rowan's a psychiatrist, and his job is stressful enough. Not only is Emilia inconsiderate, but she stirs up trouble every day. Honestly, they should just get a divorce. Having a sister-in-law like her disgusts me!"

The call ended abruptly.

I looked at Adeline. Her eyes were red-rimmed, and she was trembling uncontrollably.

I reached out to pat the back of her hand, saying, "Don't listen to him. Get some rest. After that, we'll file for divorce together."

All at once, tears streamed down Adeline's cheeks.

Looking at her tear-streaked face, I couldn't stop crying either. The love we had once dreamed of had pushed us both into an abyss.

Ever since Veronica had been diagnosed with depression and attempted suicide at home, the Caldwell brothers had revolved around her every waking moment.

Rowan had even stopped seeing other patients altogether, treating only Veronica.

To help her sleep, he called her every night and told her bedtime stories.

Meanwhile, I was suffering from severe morning sickness. I could barely sleep, yet he dismissed me as being dramatic.

"Everyone else is doing just fine. Why are you the only one with so many problems?" Rowan had snapped.

He'd take Veronica to the amusement park but refused my simple requests for walks.

"You have Adeline, don't you? Veronica only has Elliot and me."

I watched my body change during pregnancy and sank into anxiety. Before long, I was consumed by depression.

But when Rowan learned about it, he shot me an impatient glare. His voice dripped with barely concealed disgust as he spat, "Veronica has depression, and now you're copying her? Emilia, do you think lying is funny?"

And just like that, Veronica's image took a nosedive overnight. She went from the sweet young woman Rowan and Elliot had adored to the homewrecker everyone was desperate to see ruined. Watching her and the Caldwell brothers being dragged across social media, Adeline and I felt a thrill of satisfaction we had never known before. While I was on the phone asking if the evidence could be used to press charges of intentional injury against Veronica, she went berserk. She flooded my inbox and repeatedly called me. On the phone, she screamed like a madwoman, demanding that I take down the posts immediately. But as soon as I hung up, I spent money to boost the post and hired bots to make sure it soared straight to the top of the trending charts. …Later, Adeline and I met Rowan and Elliot one last time at the cafe where we had first crossed paths. They said that this would be our final meeting and that they had already signed the divorce papers. So, Adeline and I agreed. This fin

Rowan rubbed his eyes. When he realized it was me, he quickly stubbed out his cigarette and stepped forward. I noticed the stubble rough against his jaw and let out a scoff. "Rowan, how did you end up in such a pathetic state?"He pressed his lips together, tears streaming down his cheeks as he said, "I'm sorry, Emmy. I didn't know you were really in pain back then. I thought it wasn't serious. I thought you were just—""You thought I was fighting with Veronica for your attention?" I cut him off. "That I was targeting her?"Rowan's hands clenched at his sides as tears ran freely down his face."I'm sorry, Emmy," he began, his voice choking with sobs. "I didn't know. I just felt sorry for Veronica. She's an orphan, and no one cares about her. I looked after her like a younger sister, but you're the one I truly love."I shot back, "Rowan, when have I ever joked about our child? That was my baby! "You said Veronica was pitiful because she was an orphan with no one to love her. Bu

In fact, some of Veronica's lies were painfully obvious. But Rowan and Elliot never hesitated to abandon Adeline and me just to be by her side. Just like now, though Rowan was holding me and begging for my forgiveness, I couldn't miss the flicker of pain in his eyes the moment his gaze landed on the wound on Veronica's wrist. Veronica bit down on her lip, looking fragile yet stubbornly unyielding. The sight of her made my stomach churn. I pried Rowan's fingers off me one by one and looked at him coldly. "Mr. Caldwell, aren't you going to save your beloved Veronica?"He met my detached gaze, and a flicker of pain crossed his eyes. However, Veronica was standing in the middle of the road, sobbing as she cried out Rowan's and Elliot's names. Rowan stared at me, then whispered, "I'm sorry."In the end, he rushed to Veronica, bent down, and scooped her up in his arms. He then glanced back at me, guilt written all over his face. "I'm sorry, Emmy. Veronica has depression. She

Adeline fixed Elliot with a cold stare and spoke with disdain. "Isn't it obvious? The baby's gone."A surge of emotion crossed Elliot's face. He stared at Adeline in disbelief, his voice trembling uncontrollably as he asked, "What did you say? You're lying, aren't you?"All at once, tears welled up in his eyes. "That's impossible. How could the baby be gone?" he pressed in a hoarse voice. "Did you and Emilia team up to lie to Rowan and me?"Adeline scoffed and shrugged indifferently. "Dr. Caldwell, wasn't it because you rushed off to bandage someone else that Emilia's baby lost its very last chance to survive? Because of you, she even had her uterus removed! Are you and your brother satisfied now?"The moment she finished speaking, Rowan no longer spared Veronica another glance. He grabbed me by the shoulders, his voice breaking as he asked, "Emmy, this isn't true, right? It's a lie, isn't it?"I looked into Rowan's bloodshot eyes. At that point, his face was streaked with tea

"Busy? You mean busy traveling, hiking, and telling Veronica bedtime stories?" I shot back. Bitterness spread through my chest, and my heart clenched with agony. Rowan was taken aback. After a pause, he spoke again, guilt creeping into his voice. "Veronica is my patient. Everything I do is for her recovery. A doctor always puts the patient first. Can you stop treating this like a competition?"I scoffed. "Don't worry. I'll see you at the courthouse tomorrow. After the divorce, do whatever you want. We'll never see each other again."Having said that, I ended the call and blocked his number again. …Early the next morning, Adeline and I arrived at the courthouse, only to see someone unexpected. It was Veronica. She wore a white dress, and I recognized it instantly. It was the one Rowan had bought her. After all, she had posted photos of it on social media to show it off. Before Adeline or I could get a single word in, Veronica's eyes glistened with tears. Her throat tighten

I laughed in exasperation. "Apologize? Why should I apologize? You were the one who left me alone on the highway in the middle of a downpour!"You knew my stomach was hurting, yet you still dumped me there. And now, you have the nerve to ask me to be reasonable?"I added, "Don't worry. As long as you sign the papers, I'll make space for you right away. Then, you can buy as many dresses as you want for Veronica. It has nothing to do with me. I won't get in your way."I didn't want to speak to Rowan anymore. Just as I was about to end the call, his furious voice erupted through the phone. "Are you out of your mind, Emilia?" he roared. "I only bought the dress for Veronica because she was sick! Little things like this were meant to cheer her up. But you're pregnant and fat as a pig! What dress could possibly fit you?"I put a roof over your head, pay for everything you eat, and you're still not satisfied? So what if I didn't take you to the hospital? You seemed perfectly fine. Fine
