Chapter 2 The Credit Was Mine

Author: Gleaming Greenery
No one asked a single question when I was the one buried in financial records, chasing down documents, and calling in favors.

Yet, all Bianca did was greet a few bank executives, and suddenly her name was all over the meeting minutes as the person responsible for securing the credit line.

Mine never appeared, not even once.

My phone buzzed again. Once, twice.

Both messages were from Uncle Gabe.

"Elena, I've had the bank put everything on hold. I'm waiting for your final confirmation.

"You told me this money was the only thing keeping Westbrook Group afloat through the end of the year. Why are you suddenly pulling it? What did Matthew say to you?"

I stared at the last message until my eyes burned.

Gabriel Harrington had been one of my father's closest friends for decades, and he was also the chairman of Harrington Bank. He had known me since I was a child.

After I married Matthew, nearly everyone started calling me Mrs. Westbrook. However, Uncle Gabe never did. Whenever he saw me, he still opened his arms with the same warm smile and called me by my name.

A month earlier, Matthew had taken on two major expansion projects at the same time: a new distribution center and another cargo terminal. The company had used nearly all its working capital.

Vendors were demanding payment, and several shareholders had begun openly questioning his decisions.

Back then, Matthew barely slept a wink.

I woke in the middle of the night and found him sitting alone on the balcony more than once, smoking until dawn.

I hated seeing him like that.

So, I went to Uncle Gabe without telling him.

I gathered every document the bank requested, reconciled the books, sat through meeting after meeting, and explained the expansion plans until no questions remained. I kept going back until Harrington Bank finally issued its letter of intent.

That was the first night in weeks Matthew slept through.

And now he was standing there with the financing I had fought to secure, asking what I had ever done for the company.

Even worse, he was handing my credit to another woman.

My phone buzzed again.

Matthew glanced at the glowing screen and frowned. "Your phone's been going off this whole time. Are you going to deal with that?"

I looked up.

"The vendors are still waiting on you, Elena, and you're just sitting there staring at your phone."

He tapped the table impatiently. "When you're here, you're an employee just like everyone else. So, stop expecting me to make exceptions because you're my wife, and stop calling your family every time you don't like a decision I make. That's not how business works."

Then, he turned back to the video call. "Bianca, you'll take over the Harrington account from here, and don't worry about the gala. Your seat's still beside me. You earned this. You should get the credit for it."

My fingers slowly curled into my palm.

Matthew viewed me asking for a few days to recover from my surgery as special treatment. Yet, he made sure to get everything Bianca ever wanted without hesitation, even when she asked for a seat next to him.

Apparently, that was his idea of fairness.

I had spent years stepping aside for him, and Bianca somehow ended up taking a little more of the space I left behind each time I did.

I stopped arguing.

Instead, I pulled a chair and sat down.

Matthew's tone softened as soon as he saw me answering my messages. "There. Was that so hard?"

He shook his head slightly. "You didn't need to make a scene in front of everyone."

Then, he closed the folder in front of him and glanced around the room. "Anything that comes up over Christmas… I'm talking invoices, reconciliations, account problems—send it to Elena. She'll take care of it while I'm away."

Bianca gave me an apologetic smile through the screen. "Elena, would you mind covering my work, too? You're so much better at that stuff than I am. Plus, Matthew told me not to worry about work while we're away.

"He wants me to enjoy the trip, and I'd feel terrible if all his planning went to waste."

She added something else to Matthew, and he immediately looked toward the HR director. "Her files are on her desk. The blue folders. Bring them in."

They brought the files into the conference room and dropped them right on top of the envelope containing my scans within minutes.

Bianca's voice floated from Matthew's phone again.

"Oh, and Matthew said that everyone can finally get the bonuses they're still owed once the credit line comes through. So, now everyone can actually enjoy Christmas."

The department heads smiled for the first time that afternoon.

One of them stood to thank Matthew, while another joked about how much money he'd have waiting for him after the holidays.

Soon, an assistant brought in champagne and glasses.

The room quickly filled with congratulations, laughter, and the clink of glasses as people celebrated as if the deal were already sealed.

Through all of it, not one of them asked when I was being admitted to the hospital.

Right then, my phone lit up again.

It was another message from Uncle Gabe.

"Elena, once I formally withdraw the request, the bank will not proceed the credit facility as originally planned. Are you sure about this?"

Across the room, I saw Matthew accept a glass of champagne.

When he noticed I had stopped typing, his expression tightened. "How long does it take to send one message? The vendors aren't going to wait around all day."

I glanced at him one last time, then looked back at my phone and sent, "I'm sure. Withdraw it."

A few months later, my attorney dropped by at my new office."Westbrook Group's officially in debt," he said, setting a folder on my desk. "The board has removed Matthew from management as well."I looked up and asked, "What about the expansion projects?""He personally guaranteed them, so the creditors are going after him now."I opened the folder and skimmed through the outstanding claims. There were unpaid supplier invoices, unreimbursed employee travel expenses, and overdue wages. Some of the people who had raised champagne glasses in that conference room were now on the list. They had waited through Christmas, and then waited for months afterward. The bonuses Matthew had promised them never came."At first, he blamed you," my attorney continued. "He said Harrington Bank pulled the financing without warning and that you took back the distribution property, leaving the company with no way to stay afloat."I kept mum."But the restructuring team went through the records. The moderator handed me the microphone. "Ms. Lambert, please go ahead."I walked down the aisle and onto the stage.Bianca stepped aside immediately, clutching the files to her chest.Matthew didn't. He stepped in front of me before I could reach the podium. "This is a Westbrook Group presentation. You resigned, Elena. You can't just walk up here and take over."I opened my folder and handed him a copy of the management agreement. "The facility belongs to me. I gave Westbrook Group the right to manage it, but I never transferred ownership."I tapped the document in his hand. "Also, the termination notice has already been delivered."Matthew's expression changed.I held his gaze. "So, if you're going to use my property to make promises to clients, you might want to check with me first."He glanced down at the agreement before quickly closing the folder. "We don't need to do this here. We can talk about it privately.""Move."I stepped past him, took the microphone, and turned

The Regional Port & Logistics Council held its scheduled project forum at 2 p.m. It also happened to be on the second day after Christmas Break.Lucas and I were already seated in the section the organizers had reserved for us.Our new logistics company was officially up and running, and the transition plan for my distribution property was already in place. We had come that afternoon for one reason—to secure our first round of contracts.A burst of conversation near the entrance drew my attention.I looked up and saw Matthew walking in with Bianca on his arm. He was smiling as he introduced her to several bank representatives."Bianca secured the original 80-million-dollar investment for us," he told them. "You have nothing to worry about with her at the helm."Bianca stayed close to his side, but her smile looked noticeably strained.Matthew took the stage a few minutes later."Harrington Bank's withdrawal simply means we need to restructure the financing," he began. "The proj

The Christmas break had barely ended when Matthew stepped off the plane and got a call from the CFO.Several suppliers had stopped extending credit to Westbrook Group. The contractor handling the terminal expansion refused to continue work until all outstanding invoices were paid, and clients who had planned to attend the upcoming project briefing canceled one after another. That was when Matthew finally started going through the messages he'd ignored all week. He'd been busy taking Bianca to galas, yacht parties, and dinners for the entire week, barely thinking about the problems back home. He'd assumed I would take care of everything, just like I always did.Whenever the CFO called about overdue payments, Matthew had given him the same answer."Call Elena."Then, he'd hang up.It had never occurred to him that I might actually stop cleaning up his messes.Matthew figured he was safe since he now knew that I knew Uncle Gabe. He thought I'd eventually calm down, call him, and g

After I finished signing the discharge paperwork, I left the hospital with a paper bag containing my medication and medical records.Uncle Gabe's wife, Sofia Palmer, was waiting by the entrance. She hurried over as soon as she saw me and took the bag from my hand. "Easy now. Are you still in pain?"I shook my head. Then, she noticed the stack of forms I was still holding."You handled all of this yourself?" Her expression changed. "Where's Matthew?""He's still in Monteluce."Sofia didn't press after that. She simply slipped an arm around me, careful not to touch my injured shoulder. "Come stay with me for a few days. I've already got the guest room ready for you."I lowered my head, my eyes suddenly stinging with tears.Sofia and Uncle Gabe had known me since I was a little girl. She worried I'd feel out of place whenever my father brought me over to visit them, so she'd take me straight to the kitchen and let me choose whatever dessert I wanted. It had been years since I w

I woke up close to noon on the first day of Christmas break, still lying in my hospital bed at St. Rose Medical Center. My phone showed that I had a total of 43 missed calls—every single one from Matthew. He'd also forwarded me several overdue-payment emails, each with the same message attached."Handle this immediately."My phone rang again before I could put it down.I reached for it and accidentally swiped across the screen, answering the call.Matthew's voice came through immediately. "Elena, have you called the vendors? Everyone knows Harrington pulled its investment. I've already got companies saying they won't come back for project meetings after Christmas."I said nothing."Are you listening to me?"Still, I didn't answer."I gave you half a day off for the surgery. I didn't tell you to disappear. Call the vendors and tell them we will settle everything after Christmas."His voice sharpened. "I want this handled within the hour. And don't have them calling me about it
