Chapter 7

Penulis: Strawberry Spring Roll
Jasmine called William.

After he declined the call three times in a row, she ran out of patience.

She sent him a text.

Sure enough, he called back in less than two minutes.

But his voice sounded tired—deeply tired.

"Jennifer's sick. I need to stay with her," he said. "We'll deal with the last thing in a couple of days."

He was about to hang up when Jasmine quickly shouted, "No!"

Right after she said it, William let out a cold laugh. "It's just two days, not a breach of contract. Jasmine, don't push it!"

Her nose stung, and she forced herself to swallow the lump in her throat. She laughed, trying to sound light, even though her whole body was aching.

"William, there's just one thing left. After that, you're free. What—is it that you're having second thoughts? Want to stay married to me a little longer? Fine by me. I've got no problem with that."

William had always been bad at holding his temper when she used that kind of talk.

And just like always, it worked.

After he hung up, Jasmine held her phone and laughed until she couldn't stop, until tears ran down her face and into her mouth.

The bitterness of it all felt like a blade twisting in her heart.

She was afraid he would notice something was off. Afraid he would mock her again, even when she was so close to the end.

So, Jasmine asked Tania to help her put on makeup before he arrived.

It usually only took five minutes to walk downstairs, but Jasmine took nearly 20 to finally reach William.

"You're so slow. It's the last thing. Just spit it out." William said.

He was clearly annoyed, but Jasmine wasn't in a rush at all. She got into the passenger seat and buckled herself in, and she only looked at him after she settled down.

"It's simple," she said. "Make me lunch."

William stared at her like he didn't believe it. "Just lunch?"

Jasmine nodded. "Just lunch."

He kept looking at her, unsure, like he was trying to figure out if she was messing with him.

The first four things, Jasmine had made as difficult as possible. So for the last one, William had expected something outrageous—something as impossible as pulling the moon from the sky.

But to his surprise, all Jasmine asked for was a home-cooked lunch.

He glanced at the time, then picked up his phone and sent a few messages. After that, he drove them to the grocery store.

This was the first time Jasmine had ever gone shopping with William. It was also the first time they felt like a regular married couple.

William pushed the cart while Jasmine stood beside him, telling him what to get. At checkout, Jasmine stood quietly next to him.

A child came running past, nearly crashing into her.

William instinctively pulled her behind him, shielding her.

His hand, in that moment, gripped hers tightly.

Jasmine lowered her gaze to their hands that were tightly held together, and her eyes began to blur with tears again.

This was only the second time William had ever held her hand on his own.

But before she could even feel the warmth of his palm, he quickly let go.

After that, she followed him back to their marital home.

The house didn't hold many memories for them. William had been forced to marry her, and ever since, he had fought back in every way he could.

Ninety-nine affairs, and that was just the tip of the iceberg.

After changing his shoes, William went straight into the kitchen. Jasmine had been holding herself together all this time, and she finally let out a breath and slid down to the floor the second he turned away.

By the time he came back out, she had already put her mask back on. She sat there calmly, watching him serve the food like nothing had happened.

She didn't even know William could cook.

A man who was proud and untouchable, had actually learned to cook for a woman.

William must really love Jennifer.

"Why is there so much food? It's just the two of us, and I don't think we can possibly finish this," Jasmine said, frowning as he kept bringing food out.

With her body in this state, there was no way she could eat that much. She was scared that one bite too many would give her away.

William placed down the last plate, looking calm.

"Who said it's just the two of us?"

Seeing William's state, Tania felt a twisted sense of satisfaction. If it weren't for the no-photo rule, she would have taken a picture to offer to Jasmine at her grave.Watching her, William licked his cracked lips."The red string?"Tania didn't reply. Instead, she lowered her head and pulled a notebook from her bag.William's eyes never left her hands. She held the notebook up to the glass wall."What's this?" William asked, confused. He was looking for the red string.Tania didn't answer him, just flipped open the notebook and held it out for him to see. When William saw the contents, his eyes widened in shock.Every page, every line, was filled with crooked, messy handwriting.Tania said nothing, but William couldn't stop his lips from trembling. After a long pause, Tania spoke softly."William, the first letter you received wasn't even written by Jasmine. You wouldn't have known how much pain she was in back then, or how much she was suffering. Despite that, she sti

William slowly lifted his gaze."Should've what?"His cold, sharp tone cut through the air.The person who had spoken instantly went quiet, like their voice had been stolen. Their eyes flickered with fear as they shrank back behind the others.Seeing this, William laughed coldly."What's wrong? Don't have the guts to say it now? Regret not bringing that illegitimate child back?"It seemed everyone in the Graham family knew about his father's illegitimate son, except for him. When William had lost his sight in that car accident, it didn't take long for them to start plotting, trying to force him to step down. If Jasmine hadn't taken such good care of him and stayed by his side through it all, he probably would've been torn apart by those people long ago.The thought made a tight knot form in his chest, the pain sharp and overwhelming. As the room fell into a stunned silence, everyone's eyes widened, clearly shocked that William knew.William's expression grew even colder, his

"Jasmine, let me get revenge for you, okay?" William whispered softly. As soon as the words left his mouth, he lifted the bottle of liquor from the table. After tapping it a few times, he slammed it against his own head.Blood instantly poured out, staining his white shirt. He lay on the sofa, clutching Jasmine's memorial photo, when suddenly his phone rang."I'm sorry, Mr. Graham. We've tried every lead, but no one has the red string you're looking for.""Got it," William replied, his eyes closing in pain. The next moment, he ordered Ivan to book a flight. If he couldn't find the red string, he would go get one just like it himself.Hours later, the plane touched down, and William made his way up the mountain. A passerby told him the temple was at the very top, and only those with a sincere heart could meet with the monk.He walked on without a word, pushing through dizziness and the bandage wrapped around his head. William's phone buzzed with several birthday messages. It was only then that he realized, vaguely, that today was his birthday. He felt like a numb machine that had shut off his brain. His fingers mindlessly swiped through the screen, and somehow, he ended up on the messages from Jasmine.2024.5.27 00:00[William, happy birthday.]2023.5.27 00:00[William, happy birthday.]2022.5.27 00:00[William, happy birthday.]The words on the screen felt like a beast, devouring him.He felt an icy chill spread through his body, as if some invisible predator had sunk its teeth into him, tearing him apart. His entire body shook uncontrollably, overwhelmed by pain he couldn't escape. The phone slipped from his hand, crashing onto the floor. Was it that Jasmine knew him so well? Knew that even if she sent the message, he wouldn't read it? William imprisoned Jennifer inside the villa. He took her phone, all her belongings, and left the room without a single scrap of food. Then, he ignored her screams, locked the front door, and turned to leave. His phone was buzzing nonstop with calls from Ivan. When he finally answered, the latter let out a relieved sigh."Mr. Graham, you've finally picked up! There's something urgent you need to handle as soon as possible."William didn't respond. His face remained blank as he gave his orders."Buy a few boxes of wine and send them to my house."With that, he hung up and ignored the phone entirely. He had sealed the windows shut, the curtains drawn tight. He held onto the pillow Jasmine used to sleep on, greedily inhaling the scent that still lingered there. But soon, he noticed that even Jasmine's unique scent was fading. That was when it all hit him. He couldn't hold it in anymore. The emotions he had been bottling up broke through, crashing down on him. In a fit of despair,

As William knelt on the ground, his body was numb like an empty shell stripped of its soul.Slowly, he took out more candles and lit them.He needed to know where Jasmine was buried. He missed her so much that he couldn't sleep for nights. He had asked Ivan, but the latter mentioned that news of Jasmine's death came from an anonymous letter. The letter included a photo of Jasmine's canceled ID card, her medical records, and a photo of a tombstone with only her name visible. Other than that, there was no other information.Ivan didn't know where Jasmine was buried either.William had been dumbfounded after hearing that. But soon, he thought of the woman who had been tormenting him relentlessly—Tania. She was Jasmine's friend, and she had to know where Jasmine was buried. Maybe, Tania was the one who had buried her.Without a second thought, he rushed to Tania's house. But when he arrived, she was gone. Her phone and all other contact details were changed. He sent people to inve
