I walk into the company Monday morning with a smile on my face.
The receptionist in the lobby looks up as I walk through the entrance. She smiles and chimes, “Good morning, Deanna. Did you have a pleasant weekend?”
My smile widens as I stop momentarily in front of her desk. “Good morning. Yes, it was very relaxing. How about you?”
She nods. “Yes. My husband and I took the kids to the park. They had so much fun that they didn’t want to go home.”
A pain tugs at my heart, but I don’t let my smile falter as I nod. “Good. Well, I better get going to my office.”
I turn and head towards the elevator, while the receptionist calls out, “I hope you have a good day.”
Once I’m on the right floor and out of the elevator, I turn towards the break room instead of my office.
A good cup of herbal tea is just what I need to start the day off on the right foot.
As I approach the break room, laughter spills from the room. However, moments later, my feet stop and my smile fades as voices flowing into the hallway.
“I don’t even know why Deanna even bothers coming to work. She gets everything handed to her.”
Another lady chuckles and adds, “I bet her frequent appointments lately have something to do with how she got the latest deal. I heard from a friend of mine that the new partner never does business with companies unless there is something in it for the managers, if you know what I mean.”
With each venomous word spoken, bile rises up my throat and my blood boils. However, I will not reduce myself down to their level.
I quietly take a deep breath, but nearly choke on the next few words.
A third woman chimes, “I left work a little early last Friday, and I saw her coming out of the flower shop down the road with two white roses. You can bet those were for her follow-up appointment with the managers from that company.”
I would give anything right now to be able to leave this spot, but for some reason, my feet are glued to the floor.
How could they even think like that? Granted, this isn’t the first time things like this have happened. But do they not see all the additional hours I put in on these projects or the fact that I’m often here before they arrive and I’m here long after they go home?
Why am I even asking that question? I already know the answer. No, they don’t. They only thing they see what they want to see and nothing else.
As I continue to stand there frozen with my mouth slightly open, Nathan walks up next to me and softly asks, “Deanna, are you okay? You look kind of pale.”
His question is soon answered, but not by me. Instead, the voices from the break room, once again, flow out into the hallway.
“Who is it going to be this week for Deanna? Do we have another big company coming and wanting to do business with us and after only one meeting with her, they will agree to a contract? Come on. We all know that she is offering something more than a contract to them, if you know what I mean.”
Loud laughter follows right afterwards.
Nathan says nothing as he glances towards the break room and then back at me. His jaw ticks as his anger swirls in his eyes.
Before I can say anything, he turns around and marches into the break room. The laughter abruptly stops.
With an edge to his voice, he barks, “What the heck is going on in here? Are you all wanting to get fired for talking down about an executive of the company? Are you all crazy?”
He pauses for a moment. “I’ll have you know that I’ve worked with her on many projects. She can work circles around all of you combined. Not only that, but she is also the main reason why this company is still running. Before she came, the company was having problems. Serious problems. She has worked her tail off over these past few years to save her friend’s family business.
What does she get in return? From people like you, it appears she gets mocked and becomes the butt of many condescending remarks. If any of you have the brains and knowledge to keep this company working smoothly and get it growing like she does, step forward. However, I already know the answer. You can’t compare to her. Not in brains. And not in looks either.
Now, everyone, go back to work, and if I hear anyone talking like this again, I will write you up on the spot. Now, go!”
Not wanting to see their faces, I abruptly turn and head back to my office.
Maybe an herbal tea isn’t what I need this morning.
Once inside the safety of my office, I collapse into my chair.
When will those women stop?
I turn towards my computer as Nathan steps into my office with a cup in his hand. “Would you like a nice warm cup of herbal tea? That was what you were going to get earlier, right?”
A smile instantly blooms on my face as I nod and look over at him. “Thank you. That is exactly what I’m needing right now. I could also use a chocolate bar too, but I’ll have to wait for that until I go out for lunch.”
Nathan grins and steps forward. He places the warm cup of tea on my desk before he steps back. “Anything for you.”
I tilt my head slightly, but I let the thought go.
I slide the cup of tea closer to me. “So, any big news from over the weekend that I should know about?”
He shrugs his shoulders. “Nothing new.”
I lift the cup of tea to my mouth and lightly blow on it before I take a sip. With the cup still in front of me, I glance across the top of it at him. “I thought you kept talking about a big fish out looking for new partners. Is the big fish still looking? Not that I would have the time for another proposal, but I’m curious.”
Once again, he shrugs his shoulders. “I don’t really know. Since you said that we aren’t prepared for something like that, I didn’t follow up with that lead.”
Lead. He really needs to call it what it really is.
I shake my head. “I’m still not interested in anything like that yet, but I’m curious about what the gossip is saying on the matter. You know that buried deep within the gossip, often lies some truth. You just have to distinguish the difference between the truth and the gossip.”
He smiles and sits down in the chair in front of my desk. “Well, that can be true. In this case, I’m not sure how much truth there is. What I’m hearing is that the big fish’s glass vendor tried to edge up the prices of the product for some reason. The word on the street is that they were getting greedy. So, the big fish is hunting for another company to use for an upcoming project.”
I nod my head and then blow on my tea again. “Do you have a name for this big fish or are you going to continue to use an animal reference?”
His hearty chuckle fills the room. “Yes. I have the company’s name. It is WW Enterprises.”
I stare at my computer monitor while my thumb slowly rubs the underside of the golden band on my finger. A small smile slowly creeps out as I remember a particular 24 hours a few years back. For someone who is normally very serious and always thinking about how to push our company ahead or how I can get one step in front of my brother, the super son, I still can’t believe that I let Ryan actually talk me into going to Vegas for a night. I never in a million years would have dreamed that I would meet her there and got married. Granted, I was drunk, but I wasn’t that drunk. I should have been the sensible one, but for once in my life, I wanted to walk on the wild side. Man, did I ever. I still don’t know what possessed me to even ask her to marry me. My smile widens as an image of her from that night pops into my head. It may have been a few years ago, but I remember it like it just happened yester
I walk into the house. The smell of dinner instantly fills my nose and puts a smile on my face. My feet follow the delicious aromas while I call out, “I’m home. What smells so good?” Barbara pops her head out of the dining room. “Some of your favorites, including a honey glazed ham. Now go get cleaned up and come back down. The meal is ready, and we are waiting for you.” She doesn’t have to tell me twice. I bolt up the stairs and to my room. I don’t waste any time before I’ve cleaned up and back downstairs in the dining room and sitting at the table. My eyes roam across the table and my mouth waters. Most of the dishes are my favorites. Dotty chuckles beside me and nudges my arm. “Mom is pulling out all the stops. She is going to make sure that you have no desire to move out. Look at this. These are all your favorites.” While I lick my lips, I n
I walk down the hall towards my office. However, instead of walking into my office, I stop at Nathan’s door first. As I stand in the doorway, I softly knock on the doorframe and clear my throat. While sitting behind his desk, Nathan looks up from his computer and a smile instantly forms on his face. “Good morning, Deanna. Do you want another cup of herbal tea this morning?” I stifle a chuckle and shake my head. “No. It appears that someone has been talking to Cliff about a big fish out there. Do you happen to know who that could be?” He swallows hard and flashing me a sheepish grin as he leans back in his chair. “Well, that may have been me. Did he get you to agree to go after it?” I sigh and step into his office. I stop right behind a chair in front of his desk and lean forward with my hands resting on the top of it. “You can say that he has pushed me into a corner. Do you
I grab my phone off my desk and without looking at the caller ID, I answer it. “What! Speak!” I let all my frustrations pour out of me and into my words while I continue to scan the various proposals from the multiple vendors. This is the reason why I usually stick with the same vendors once I settle our relationship. My hand tightens around my phone as Ryan quickly replies, “Wow there, tiger. You don’t need to bite my head off. I have done nothing wrong.” I raise an eyebrow and snort. “Really. You did nothing wrong. I’m sure if I comb through my memory, I’ll find something that you did wrong. Like, leave me here to go through all these proposals by myself, while you are off trying to get the up-and-coming company to agree to a partnership. You know that I’m the one who wanted to go there instead of you. I’m still trying to figure out how it has worked out that you have gone instead of me.”
I grumble under my breath as I walk into my office. I had spent the rest of the day yesterday trying to rearrange my schedule to accommodate Ryan and the CEO. As I walk around my desk towards my chair, Dotty bounces into the room. However, her face is anything but excited. She has a crease along her forehead with her mouth curving downwards in a slight frown. “Hey, didn’t you grab anything to eat this morning? You were running late and ate nothing at the house. Are you sure you don’t want me to go down to the corner and pick you up something?” I sigh and shake my head. “I don’t know if I have time to eat anything even if you got me something.” Just as I finish my sentence, Nathan walks into my office with a cup of tea in one hand and a muffin in the other. “Deanna, I thought maybe you would like another cup of herbal tea to get you started off on the right foot. I also picked up a few muffins this mo
I pace back and forth in the living room. I still can’t believe that I punched the jerk, but I have to admit it felt great. I put all my pain for the last several years into that one punch. However, if it wasn’t for Nathan and Cliff pulling me away from Connor, I would have landed a few more, too. Regardless, this doesn’t explain why he is here and why now. I run my hand through my hair as I turn to pace back in the other direction. Dotty slides to the edge of the couch. Her concern written all over her face, but it is also woven through her words. “Deanna. Sit down, please. You will not solve anything by pacing back and forth. Now, come on.” I shake my head as my eyes sting. “No. I’m too upset to sit right now.” She sighs as a slight frown forms on her face. “Okay. But we are going to talk while you continue to work out your anger.” I wave my h
I collapse on the end of the bed and groan as I lower my head down into my hands, with my elbows resting on my legs. Why did it happen that way? That isn’t how I thought it would go. I close my eyes and run through the earlier events today in the conference room. My heart had soared when I saw her entering the room. She is just as pretty as she was both in Vegas and at the church many years ago. I still remember my breath hitching and getting stuck in my throat when I looked down the aisle and saw her. Her wedding dress hugged her curves just right, and I instantly wished she had been wearing something like that when we got married the night before. Ryan’s concerned voice cuts through my thoughts. “Con, are you alright? That isn’t quite the reaction that I was hoping for when Deanna finally saw you again.” He pauses for a moment. “To be honest, I don’t know exactly how she would react, but that
I drag my feet into my office.Usually, I’m eager to get to the office and begin working. However, as soon as I walked into the building today, the images from yesterday came flowing back to me.I could barely pull myself together to give the lobby receptionist a smile or even tell her good morning. From the puzzled look she gave me, I know she can tell that something is wrong with me. I’m just grateful that she didn’t ask me what was wrong. Then again, I’m sure that most of the building probably heard me screaming my lungs out yesterday.Just thinking about it has my blood boiling. This is exactly what those nasty women in the office need to start another horrendous rumor about me. Not that I care though, but at some point, the office gossip might end up out in the business world as gossip our potential clients may hear or our competitors can try to use as some sort of advantag
