The Man With Silver Eyes

last update Fecha de publicación: 2026-09-30 20:12:15

He knew my name. He knew what I was. And behind him, deeper in the forest, a dozen more silver eyes opened in the dark.

They were not from my pack.

I should have run. Every instinct my human side had left was screaming to shift back into Lyra and run until my paws bled. But Lyra didn't move. She stood perfectly still inside me, staring through my eyes at the man in the black coat.

_Do not run,_ she whispered. _He is not prey. He is not predator. He is... familiar._

The man took one step forward, and the snow under his boot did not crunch. It melted.

"Stella Ward," he said again, as if tasting the name. His voice was low, rough, like he hadn't used it in a long time. "You are smaller than I imagined."

The fangs I thought I saw when he smiled were gone. Or maybe it was just shadow. Up close, he was not old. He looked maybe twenty-five, but his eyes looked a hundred. His black hair was damp with snow, his coat was open, and under it he wore no shirt. Just scars. Dozens of scars, silver like my eyes, running across his chest and throat.

"Do you know me?" he asked.

I shook my head. The white streak in my hair glowed brighter, reacting to him.

"Good," he said. "That means Elara kept her promise. She said she would make you forget, so you would be safe."

Elara.

The name hit my chest like a second rejection. I didn't know an Elara. But Lyra did. Lyra howled inside me, a mournful, broken sound that made my knees buckle.

Behind him, the dozen silver eyes came forward. Wolves. Six of them, huge, grey and white, but when they stepped into the moonlight I saw they were not normal wolves. Their paws were too large. Their eyes were too intelligent. And they all had the same silver scar on their foreheads that the man had on his chest.

They were not looking at me with hunger. They were looking at the man, waiting for an order.

"Who is Elara?" I forced out. My teeth were chattering now, not from cold, but from the aftershock of my first shift. The adrenaline was crashing.

The man's face softened for the first time. "Your mother."

The world went silent except for the frozen river cracking behind me.

"My mother is Mara Ward," I said. "Beta female of the Blackthorne pack. She is in the hall -"

"She raised you," he cut in, not unkindly. "She did not birth you. Your mother was my sister. Her name was Elara White. The last true White Queen. She died the night you were born, giving you that streak."

I wanted to call him a liar. I wanted to shift and tear his throat out for saying such a thing. But Lyra was crying. And deep down, a part of me had always known I did not look like Mara. Mara had green eyes, brown hair, small frame. I was tall, my nose was different, my temper was different.

And I had never had a wolf until tonight.

"Why should I believe you?" I whispered.

"Because," a second voice said from behind me, "he is telling the truth."

I spun so fast I fell into the snow.

Jaxon stood at the edge of the trees.

He was still naked, covered in blood and scratches from running through the forest. His black hair was plastered to his forehead. His amber eyes were rimmed red. His Alpha aura, usually so strong it made my knees weak, was shattered. He looked like a boy who had lost a war.

He wasn't looking at the man. He was looking only at me, at the coat that was too big for me, at the mark on my shoulder that was now fully formed - a crescent moon held in wolf jaws, glowing silver.

"Stella," he breathed.

Lyra snarled so loud my own mouth opened and a growl came out. The sound made Jaxon's wolves whine, even though he was in human form.

"Don't," I said. My voice was ice. "Don't say my name like you have a right to it. You rejected me."

"I know what I did!" He took a step forward, and the six grey wolves behind the silver-eyed man growled as one, low and deadly.

The man - Kael, he hadn't told me his name yet but Lyra whispered it, _Kael_ - did not even turn. He raised one hand and his wolves went silent.

"Jaxon Blackthorne," Kael said, finally looking at Jaxon. His voice dropped twenty degrees. "You should not have followed her."

"I followed my mate," Jaxon spat, his hands turning to claws. "Rejected or not, she is still mine. The bond -"

"The bond you severed?" Kael smiled, and this time I did see fangs. Long, white, wolf fangs. "There is no bond left to follow, little Alpha. What you feel now is not the mate bond. It is regret. And it will kill you slower."

Jaxon flinched as if Kael had hit him. Because it was true. The mate bond was gone. That golden thread was ash. What was left in my chest was not love for Jaxon. It was emptiness where love used to be, and Lyra filling it with cold fury.

"What do you want with her?" Jaxon demanded, ignoring Kael and looking at me. "Stella, please, come back to the pack. The Elders - after you shifted - they are saying -"

"Saying what? That I am a monster? That I am extinct?" I laughed, and the sound scared even me. "You said I had no wolf, Jaxon. You said the Moon Goddess made a mistake. Was that your words, or your father's?"

Jaxon's face went white. He knew I knew.

His father, Alpha Magnus, had been standing behind the Elder during the ceremony. I had seen him whisper in Jaxon's ear just before Jaxon spoke. I thought it was encouragement.

It was an order.

"My father..." Jaxon started, then stopped. His jaw worked. "My father told me about the White Wolves. He told me if I accepted you tonight, the other packs would come. That they would burn our territory to the ground to get you. That a White Queen cannot be a Luna, she must be... she must be a High Queen. And our pack would be destroyed in the war for you. I rejected you to save them."

It was a good lie. Practiced. Almost believable.

Lyra laughed inside my head, a terrible, ancient laugh.

_He lies, Stella. He lies because the truth is uglier. Ask him what his father promised him if he rejected you._

"What did he promise you?" I asked.

Jaxon couldn't meet my eyes. The snow was falling harder now, sticking to his shoulders.

"The Northern Alliance," he whispered. "If I rejected you, the Alpha of the Northern Alliance would give me his daughter. Her pack is twice our size. With them, we would be safe from whoever comes for you."

There it was.

He didn't reject me to save the pack from war. He rejected me to trade me for a bigger army and a more convenient bride.

The last piece of my heart that had been holding on for him finally broke. And when it broke, something else woke up.

The mark on my shoulder exploded with light so bright Jaxon and Kael both shielded their eyes. The snow around me melted in a perfect circle. My white streak turned pure silver from root to tip.

Lyra didn't just speak. She took over.

My body shifted, but not fully. I stayed on two legs, but my hands became claws, my eyes became full moon, my teeth became fangs. Half-wolf. The form of legends that only White Queens could take.

I looked at Jaxon, and he fell to his knees. His black wolf, despite his human's betrayal, recognized a superior.

"Little Alpha," I said, but it was Lyra's voice layered over mine. "You traded a Goddess for a treaty. You will learn what that costs."

I turned to Kael. He was on one knee now, head bowed, but not from fear. From respect.

"Kael of the Veil Guard," Lyra said through me. "You have kept your oath. You have guarded the border for twenty-one years."

"I have, my Queen," Kael answered, his voice thick.

"Then guard it once more. Take him back to his father. Tell Magnus Blackthorne that his debt is due. Tell him the White Queen he thought he buried in the snow has woken. And tell him... I am coming for my mother's bones."

Kael's eyes snapped up, blazing silver.

Jaxon made a strangled sound. "Stella -"

I looked back at him, and for the first time, I felt nothing. No love. No hate. Just pity.

"Don't come for me again, Jaxon. Next time Lyra is in control, she will not let me be merciful."

The six wolves formed a circle around Jaxon, not to hurt him, but to escort him. Or drag him.

Kael stepped closer to me, careful to keep his distance, and held out his hand, palm up. In his palm lay a necklace. A simple leather cord with a single white fang on it.

"Your mother's," he said. "Elara's fang. She left it for you."

I took it. The moment the fang touched my skin, a flood of memories that were not mine slammed into me - a woman with my face singing in a language I didn't know, a great white wolf standing over a crib, a man with Jaxon's eyes holding a bloody knife.

I gasped and would have fallen if Kael hadn't caught my elbow.

"Easy," he whispered. "The memories will come slowly. Your human mind cannot hold them all at once."

Behind us, Jaxon was being pushed back into the forest by the wolves, shouting my name, but his voice was getting fainter.

I clutched the fang necklace, the coat around my shoulders, the snow melting under my bare feet.

I was not the rejected wolfless girl anymore.

I was Stella White. Daughter of Elara. The last White Queen.

And I had just declared war on the pack that raised me.

Kael looked at the path back to the territory, then at the frozen river that led deeper into the Dark Forest, where the blue flowers I had seen in my vision were starting to glow.

"Where to, my Queen?" he asked.

I thought of the hall, of my adopted mother crying, of Jaxon's broken howl, of the bones Kael mentioned.

"To the river," I said. "I want to see where she died."

Kael smiled, sad and proud.

"As you command."

We walked into the dark, leaving Jaxon's pack behind, and the river cracked open beneath my feet, as if it recognized its queen returning.
