22. The basement

“Female.” The hanging male hisses.

“You’re...” I trail off. Alive is not it. They are immortals.

“Sane? Conscious? I’m both.” He says with a hint of sarcasm. I’ve not recovered from my shock. The sight of him, and all of the others bothers me on a visceral level.

“Why are you down here? Who did this to you?”

Goddess don’t let it be Lor, anybody but Lor.

“The demon wolf.” The male hisses and my eyes close as my worst fear is confirmed. When I open my eyes, his are on me, studying me the same way I studied him. He does not seem to mind that he is hanging upside down at all, somehow pulling off a casual look as if we met at the park.

“Explain.” I grit out.

His eyes narrow on me but he knows he is at a great disadvantage and obliges.

“Well, Princess, it is exactly as you imagine. Every once in a while, the demon wolf comes down here and when he does blood flows and screams ring. He tortures us in ways that even immortals can’t imagine, and he revels in it.”

“No way.” I whisp
