chapter 9: living in the present, thinking of the past

When she finally managed to regain consciousness the next day, her memories had fully been regained. The first thing that occurred to her was the fact that everything hurt. Everything throbbed in pain. She tried to move but it all felt wrong. When she attempted to turn over, a wave of nausea overtook her and she felt something wet dripping down her chin.

That's when her eyes snapped open, staring at nothing. Her head felt like someone had jammed cotton balls inside it, and she could barely move.

Where am I?

As if summoned by her thoughts, there was a soft, familiar voice speaking. She strained her ears, trying to catch what was being said.

“Hey, Nicole. How are you feeling?”

She tried to speak, but found that her mouth felt incredibly dry. The sound only came out as a croak. Her throat was burning. As she opened her mouth again, however, another unfamiliar voice spoke up.
