Chapter 1

I didn't answer. I just watched Layla show off.

"Dad said he's going to formally introduce me to everyone at dinner tonight. Evelyn, we're going to be living together for a long time."

Her smile widened as she stepped closer and patted my shoulder.

"Don't you think so?"

Just then, my parents walked out of the house.

When they saw me, there was none of the excitement I'd imagined. They just exchanged an awkward glance.

I opened my mouth, but before I could say anything, Ron stepped out behind them. He curled his lip when he saw me.

"Perfect timing. What, you heard about Layla's recital and rushed home because you couldn't stand her getting all the attention?"

He laughed softly before handing Layla a cup of coffee.

"Evelyn, you weren't born with musical talent. Don't blame Mom and Dad for putting their time and money into someone who was. You have no one to blame but yourself. Everyone else in this family was born with talent. You're the only one stuck with that awful voice."

My parents kept their heads down and said nothing. They didn't even try to defend me.

My grip tightened around my suitcase. So this was how they really felt about me.

Just because I didn't have a beautiful voice, I wasn't even worth listening to.

I swallowed the bitterness in my throat and spoke in a hoarse voice. "I'm not competing with her. Do whatever you want."

The moment she heard my rough voice, Layla burst out laughing.

A few servants by the door quietly laughed at me, whispering among themselves.

"Ms. Evelyn still sounds terrible. No wonder Mr. and Mrs. Bennett don't want anything to do with her."

"She could scare a kid just by opening her mouth. Forget singing. Who'd even want to hear her talk?"

Layla gave me a mocking look before quickly hiding it behind an innocent smile.

"A singer needs a beautiful voice more than anything. Evelyn never had one. No wonder she hasn't gotten anywhere after all these years. But that's okay. When I have my recital, she can stand somewhere in the back. At least people will get to see her."

I said nothing. Whatever desire I'd had to give her the gift was gone.

When I'd heard about Layla's recital, I'd turned down two international performances and flown home just to help her prepare.

But I'd barely made it through the door before she started treating me like a threat.

I moved to walk past her, but she suddenly grabbed my bag. Its contents spilled all over the floor.

The gift I'd brought her tumbled out with everything else. All eyes immediately fell on the stained box.

"An original score by Melina Reeves? The National Medal of Arts winner? And it's... for Layla?"

Ron spotted the inscription first. The moment he read it aloud, everyone went silent.

Anyone who knew anything about music knew Melina Reeves was a legend.

Even with all my parents' fame and connections, they'd never managed to meet her in person.

"An unpublished Melina Reeves score? Evelyn, how did you get this?"

My mother gasped as she carefully picked up the score and examined it.

There was no point hiding it anymore. I took a deep breath.

"I got it from Melina herself. It was supposed to be a homecoming gift for Layla. I just didn't expect—"

A scoff cut me off.

Layla snatched the score out of my mother's hands and held it up between two fingers, barely giving it a glance.

"Melina left the music industry years ago. If you're going to lie just to impress us, at least make it convincing. You probably bought this off some random street vendor and decided to call it a Melina original. Do you really think we'd fall for that?"

The nurse curled her lip and held out her phone."It's all over the internet that you put your own mother in the hospital.""So what if you're a musical prodigy who's famous abroad? That doesn't give you the right to treat a younger musician like that. Were you really that afraid she'd steal your spotlight?"My eyes narrowed as I took her phone. My face darkened the moment I saw what was on the screen. In the video, Layla cried to the camera as she told one lie after another about what I'd done to her.She blamed me for my mother's hospitalization, her ruined concert, and what had happened at the party. The video had gone viral online. The comments were full of people attacking me.Not one of them had anything good to say.“How petty. Who cares if she's a musical prodigy? Someone that rotten doesn't deserve any of those awards.”“What kind of music can someone that spiteful make? Those awards were probably rigged anyway.”“Who knows how she actually won those awards? You know what I me

Layla had shown off in front of me over and over again. I'd ignored her every time, but now she actually dared to put her hands on me.Who did she think she was? Did she really think being my parents' adopted daughter gave her the right to walk all over me? She was asking for trouble.Layla rolled across the floor three times before she finally stopped. She struggled to her feet, clutching her lower stomach and sobbing."Dad! Help me! She's going to beat me to death!"My father hesitated, not knowing whose side to take."Well, if you hadn't said those things about Evelyn, she wouldn't have hit you."When Layla realized they weren't going to take her side, her expression darkened. She glared at me like she wanted to tear me apart. She was about to say more when the operating room doors opened.A nurse wheeled my mother out. We immediately gathered around her, and no one paid Layla any more attention."The surgery went well. Now we have to see if she wakes up. Talk to her often. If she w

I put my violin away and turned to leave. My bags were already packed at home. I just had to pick them up and go.At the front door, I ran into my family. Their expressions changed when they saw my bags. They stared at me, their daughter who had grown as tall as them. They seemed to realize for the first time how little attention they'd paid to me over the years.I'd gone abroad alone to study, and somehow, I'd grown up without them noticing.Yet they were my parents, and they'd never once asked how I was doing out there. They hadn't even known what I had achieved abroad. My mother forced a smile, her voice hoarse."Evelyn, are you leaving so soon? Stay a few more days. We haven't seen each other in years. We should sit down and talk as a family."They no longer treated me with the same disdain as before. Now that they knew what I'd achieved, their attitude toward me had completely changed.A humorless laugh escaped me. I met their eager eyes, then stepped aside and showed them the emp

The old man was so excited that he stepped over the seats to get to me, then gave me a careful look."Byron is a lucky man to have a student as talented as you. He invited me to your recital last year. You were incredible."I hadn't expected him to know my teacher. I nodded and thanked him.More and more people in the hall stood up. After hearing what he said, they quickly searched my name online. The elderly man was Michael Grant, once a celebrated musical genius. His concerts had always sold out, and every student he'd personally taught had gone on to become famous. My parents were among them."Good Lord, I can't believe I'm seeing her in person! Tickets to her concerts abroad are nearly impossible to get.""Hearing her play live is heavenly. After that violin performance, the singing just now was painful to listen to.""Exactly. She has a nice voice, but her breath control isn't steady. She still needs more practice."As the comments continued, Layla's expression grew darker. She wa

While they were at the hospital, I went home and started packing my things.Halfway through, Ron came back.I looked at him and tried to speak, but nothing came out. When we were kids, he was always sneaking me out behind our parents' backs. Even when we got caught and he was punished, he never ratted me out. When had the brother I remembered become a stranger?"Layla's concert is tomorrow, and she still doesn't have a violinist."I remember you studied violin for a couple of years, so I put your name down."His brow was furrowed, but his tone was a little softer."Layla is the one people are coming to see anyway. No matter how badly you play, nobody will notice. You ruined her voice. You should do something to make it up to her."Then he noticed the luggage and paused."What are you packing for? Is it time to go back to school?"I closed my eyes and spoke quietly, "I'm leaving.""Never mind. It's probably better if you go back soon. At least you won't spend every day fighting with Lay
