Iris’s POV

I woke up to the scent of food.

For a second, I thought I was dreaming, probably still unconscious. My body was too sore to move, so I kept my eyes shut. But the smell kept tugging at me sharply, like it was poking at my hunger with a stick. My stomach twisted painfully, and rumbled sharply, reminding me that I hadn’t eaten in a long time.

I forced my eyes open.

The ceiling was different from the last room. I was in a different room from the one I had woken up in before.

I blinked a few more times and turned my head.

There was a small table a few feet away. On it, there was a covered tray of food. Beside it, there was a note.

I sat up slowly, groaning as all my muscles ached. Pain shot through my ribs, and I winced. I touched my injuries to realize that someone had redressed the wounds while I was unconscious.

My stomach growled again.

I reached for the note first.

‘Eat up. You need it to heal faster. –R.’

I stared at it for a long moment, then I looked at the covered tray

  • Too Late, Alpha: The Mate He Never Wanted    Chapter 35

Iris's POVI woke up with something on my chest. For a second, I didn’t know where I was or why my pillow felt odd. Then I looked down and saw Evie’s coloring book. Even in my sleep, I had clutched it tightly. My breath caught as everything came back in an instant.Evie. The forest. The rogues. The blood. Rowan. Last night.I blinked at the ceiling. My eyes felt heavy and swollen, and my face felt dried with dried tears. My body still hurt, but it was better than yesterday. My ribs ached with every movement, and my legs burned like my bones had been crushed. But still better than the last day.The room was dim, and the silence was suffocating.Sometimes, I still expected to wake up to Evie’s voice. Or hear her footsteps running toward my door. She would jump on the bed shouting “Mommy, wake up!” several times and press her cold feet against my leg just to annoy me..But now… there was nothing. No laugh. No footsteps.Just suffocating silence.I swallowed hard and rubbed at my eyes, tr

Eric's POVThe drive back was torture.I had my hands on the steering wheel, my eyes were on the road, but my mind wasn’t here. All I could see was the wide pool of dark dried blood. The rogues, mangled and torn. Her scent. It played over and over again like a cursed video that I couldn’t shut off.I gripped the wheel tighter until my knuckles went white.Iris.Had she crawled away to safety? Or was she truly gone? The thought made my throat close up.I tried to shove it away, but Evie’s face flashed through my mind next. Her small, cold body lying in that casket.I blinked rapidly, clenching my jaw so hard it hurt.I had failed her, and now…I had failed Iris too.Another image flashed through my mind. It was the last time I saw both of them. That night as Iris screamed after me as I drove away. She had begged me to stop, and help our dying daughter. I hadn’t even glanced back.A growl escaped my throat, and I slammed the brake. The tires screeched as the car came to a stop in the m

  • Too Late, Alpha: The Mate He Never Wanted    Chapter 33

Eric's POVI took a deep breath, slammed my foot back on the gas, and kept driving. I didn’t know what the hell Marcus found, but it had to be something, for my wolf to react.I reached the pack’s border in under seven minutes. Marcus’s car was already parked at the side. I parked, and stepped out of the car.Marcus stood at the edge of the pack border with two patrol guards beside him.“What is it?” I demanded as I approached. “Why the hell did you call me at two-thirty in the morning?”Marcus turned, and dread crept through me as I saw the grave look in his eyes.“We picked up the scent of rogues a mile ,” he said. “The patrol team tracked it. We might need to shift because cars can't go in, and walking will take hours.”I nodded, silently giving him the go-ahead.After shifting, Marcus turned and began walking out of the pack border. I followed in my wolf form, my heart pounding in my chest. We began to increase pace, and soon, we began running through the woods. I lost track of ho

Eric's POV I grabbed my jacket, throwing it over my shoulders as I headed for the door.“Where are you going?” Zara’s voice caught me mid-step.I didn’t stop moving. I struggled to put on my shoes, trying to wear one while hopping on one foot.“Marcus found something,” I muttered. She sat up, narrowing her eyes at the clock. “Eric, it’s past two in the morning.”“I know,” I said, finally getting my foot in. I grabbed the other shoe, put it on with a grunt. “That’s why I need to go. If he’s calling me at this hour, it’s not something that can wait.”Zara pushed the blanket off her legs and stood up slowly, arms crossed. “What exactly did he find?”“I don’t know,” I said impatiently. “He just said I needed to come see it myself.”She narrowed her eyes. “That’s not clear enough. What if it’s nothing important?”I shrugged, running a hand through my hair. “Then I’ll find out and come back. I’ll call you later.”Her lips parted like she wanted to argue, but before she could speak, the bed

Eric’s POVI couldn’t sleep.Every time I closed my eyes, I saw EvieShe looked so pale and was still, wrapped in that blanket with her unicorn placed beside her. Her favourite unicorn that she had offered to Tiffany. That image had burned itself into my memory, and now it played over and over like a loop in my mind.I turned to the other side of the bed, trying to calm my mind, but it was impossible. The time was 2am according to the clock on the wall.Zara was sleeping beside me, breathing steadily and peacefully. She was totally unbothered, unlike me.I stared at the ceiling for a few more minutes, then I sat up and reached for my phone.I had to do something, anything, even if it was too late.I scrolled to Beta Jeremy’s contact and hit dial.He picked up on the third ring with a groggy voice. “Alpha?”“I need a proper burial arranged,” I said quietly. I glanced at the sleeping Zara and lowered my voice. “For Evie”There was silence for a moment. “For… Evie?” he asked slowly, like

  • Too Late, Alpha: The Mate He Never Wanted    Chapter 30

Iris’s POVSomething fluttered in my chest, and for a second, I didn’t know how to breathe as a sudden warmth spread through me.I looked away immediately. A part of me wanted to question what he meant, but another part was terrified of the answer, because I wasn’t sure I was ready to hear it just yet.“I haven’t thanked you,” I said quietly. “For everything. For bringing me here, for making sure I was treated. You didn’t owe me anything, and I… I really am grateful.”Rowan nodded, then he stood up, and the weight in the air shifted, like whatever spell had passed between us had lifted. He picked up the tray and gathered the empty plate and cup. “You need rest,” he said softly. “I’ll send Jasmine to bring your medicine later.”I nodded again. My throat still felt tight. It was absurd seeing him, an Alpha, carrying a tray with my empty plates. But he didn’t seem bothered in any way.Rowan paused at the door. “And I’ll make sure Chloe stays away from you.”I blinked. “Where will you sta
