Chapter 3

Autor: Cutie Kitty
I stood there stunned, unable to believe Ethan had actually gone behind my back like that. But it was already too late. No matter how angry I was, I couldn't change what had happened.

Michelle's hiring paperwork had already gone through, and she was officially part of the lab.

When I got home that night, I was so angry I couldn't bring myself to say a word.

Ethan could tell something was wrong and spoke to me in a gentle, soothing voice. "Michelle really needs this opportunity. Her family's struggling. Her mom's been bedridden for years, and she even had to borrow money just to afford grad school.

"She's been supporting herself the whole time, so she's had to miss a lot of classes. That's why she failed so many courses."

Then he showed me photos of Michelle's sick mother and the modest place she lived in.

In the end, I felt sorry for her. So I let it go.

From then on, I made time every day to help Michelle with her experiments. Whenever she ran into a problem, I showed her the best approach and did everything I could to boost her success rate so she could pass probation and earn a permanent position.

I thought that after everything I was doing for her, even if she wasn't grateful, she would at least work hard enough not to let me down.

I never imagined that helping her would be the beginning of a nightmare.

Before long, word spread throughout the company that I had made an exception to hire Michelle, and people started complaining.

I didn't think much of it. As long as Michelle proved herself with solid results, I figured the criticism would die down on its own.

But after she passed probation, she started making mistake after mistake. Somehow, her performance was even worse than before.

Ethan worked in compliance, so he knew exactly what she was doing wrong. Yet every time, he looked the other way and gave her a perfect score anyway.

Watching him blatantly rig her evaluations right in front of everyone was more than I could take. I decided to confront him about it.

Ethan kept his head down, writing his final report as if none of this mattered to him. "Michelle just started here. Of course she's going to make mistakes. I can't be too hard on someone who's new."

I wasn't convinced. "You never gave me or anyone else that kind of leeway when we were new."

If anything, Ethan had always been hardest on me. There were times when I hadn't even technically broken a rule, but he still docked points from my evaluation and fined me without hesitation.

Afterward, he would explain that he was only being so strict because he wanted me to improve. He also said he couldn't afford to show me any favoritism, or everyone else he had penalized would start complaining.

I wasn't happy about it, but I understood where he was coming from, so I accepted it.

But this time, I couldn't.

Ethan was starting to look impatient. "So you think it's unfair? Fine. I'll cut you some slack next time too. I just got promoted, and I'm still wrapping up the handover. I've still got several reports to finish, so you should get going. This isn't worth wasting any more time on."

With that, he got to his feet and jokingly ushered me out of his office.

I was frustrated. I knew he was only brushing me off because he knew he was in the wrong.

Everyone in the company knew R&D had the heaviest workload. But when I was going through my own promotion and handover, I had still made time for everything Ethan asked of me, whether it was work-related or personal.

Even during the most critical stages of an experiment, I had gone along with every one of his inspections, no matter how excessive they seemed.

But with his office door shut in my face, I had no choice but to head back to the lab.

I had barely reached the entrance when I heard someone ask, "Michelle, why does Ethan treat you so well? Isn't he Sara's boyfriend?"

Michelle scoffed. "Sara? What's so great about her? She walks around acting like she's such a big deal, like she's better than everyone else. Ethan's been sick of her for a long time. He already wants to dump her."

One of my coworkers, clearly enjoying the drama, chimed in, "Why? I think Sara's great at what she does. She hasn't even been with the company a year, and she's already been promoted twice."

  • Too Late to Win Me Back   Chapter 12

The ambulance arrived quickly. After stabilizing Ethan at the scene, the paramedics rushed him to the hospital.Once Magnus found out Ethan was my ex, he kept grumbling that he should've gotten in a few kicks while he had the chance. But despite all his complaining, he still quietly covered a large portion of Ethan's medical expenses and told the hospital to do whatever it took to save him.Our biggest concern was Kyle and Katie. We didn't want what they'd witnessed to leave any lasting trauma, so Magnus and I postponed our trip home and took them to counseling. We stayed another week, and once we were sure the kids were doing fine, we finally headed home.Three major things happened while we were still there.First, Ethan survived. The doctors managed to save him, but although his brain function began to recover, he never regained consciousness. He was left in a vegetative state and would spend the rest of his life confined to a hospital bed.Second, because Ethan survived, Mic

Ethan went on. "Michelle never deserved all the chances I gave her. Her mother wasn't bedridden at all. She made the whole thing up just to come between us."Sara, she lied to me for years, and I only found out the truth today. Looking back now, I feel like such a fool."I let out a bitter laugh.A fool? Was that really worse than being rejected in front of everyone, then falsely accused and having my reputation ruined?None of it surprised me. He had no one to blame but himself. For years, he'd refused to see Michelle for who she really was.Ethan looked up at me again, tears streaming down his face. That was when I noticed how exhausted he looked. Faint shadows ringed his eyes, as if he hadn't slept all night, and he was noticeably thinner than the Ethan I remembered from eight years ago.I barely had time to think about it before Kyle spoke up beside me."Mommy, you taught us that feeling sorry for people who do bad things just gives them another chance to do it again. Peopl

The moment the video call connected, Magnus broke into a grin and immediately started flirting with me. "Babe, it's been forever. I missed you so much."We'd been together for seven years, but I still wasn't completely used to how openly affectionate he could be, even with other people around.Diana wisely pretended not to hear and ushered Kyle and Katie out of the room."So? Did you miss me?" Magnus asked. My cheeks warmed. "I did.""What was that? I couldn't hear you."He obviously had, but he tilted his head, bringing his ear closer to the screen."I missed you," I repeated."Who missed me?" he teased, a mischievous smile tugging at his lips.My face grew even hotter. Gritting my teeth, I raised my voice. "I missed you, honey."A sudden thump came from the doorway. I turned to find three heads peeking around the doorframe, one above the other.Diana gave me a sheepish grin. "Sorry. These two refused to stay away. They insisted on coming in."My face felt like it was on f

I hurried to reassure her. "It's nothing, Diana. I can handle it. I didn't want to bother you over something this small."Ethan and Michelle froze. "Diana?"Ethan looked especially shaken. The last trace of hope vanished from his face as the color drained from it.He could tell himself that Kyle and Katie were just two kids I'd gotten to play along, but he couldn't explain Diana away so easily. The company had gone out of its way to recruit her not long ago, and she was his direct supervisor. Her integrity was beyond question, and she was highly respected both nationally and internationally. There was no reason for someone like her to help me stage a lie. From the moment Diana arrived, everyone around us had gone quiet.Ethan gritted his teeth. "Professor Hart, is Sara the daughter-in-law you mentioned before? The one who lives overseas? Do you even know what she did back then? She stole someone else's—"I caught the malice in his eyes, and my heart turned cold. I never thought

Ethan's voice grew rougher with every word until his sobs made it almost impossible for him to speak. So he did know. When he'd chosen to believe Michelle over me and even accused me of something I hadn't done to protect her, I'd thought he'd forgotten everything I'd ever done for him."But Mommy does those things for Kyle and me too. Mommy loves us too," Katie said, her arms wrapped around my neck."That's right."I kissed her little cheek, then looked at Ethan. He stood frozen in place, sobbing so hard he could barely speak.I added, "Love doesn't just disappear. But neglect it long enough, and sooner or later, that love will find its way to someone else."I stepped around Ethan to leave, but he moved in front of me again, refusing to let me pass.I'd had enough. "Ethan, what do you want from me?"Ethan looked at me with red-rimmed eyes. "Show me their birth certificates. Prove they're really your children, and I'll believe you have a husband and a family now. Otherwise, I'm

The girl looked absolutely adorable in a little red dress and black leather shoes.Beside her, the boy wore a shirt and vest with a beret perched on his head. He held her hand tightly, looking far too serious and mature for his age.The two children immediately drew excited gasps from the crowd."They're adorable. Who did they just call Mommy?"As everyone whispered among themselves, the twins ran straight to me, and each wrapped their arms around one of my legs.I crouched down and scooped my daughter, Katie Fortner, into my arms, then ruffled my son Kyle Fortner's hair.Smiling, I said, "Kyle, thanks for taking such good care of Katie for me."The moment everyone realized they were my children, the crowd erupted again.Michelle froze for a second, then a smile she couldn't suppress slowly spread across her face.Ethan, meanwhile, went completely pale. The ring slipped from his fingers and hit the floor. His lips trembled, and the shock in his eyes quickly gave way to disappo
