Chapter 4

Author: Sweetie Moore
Wyatt was still beside Hannah, and he quietly reminded her, "Hannah, the watch..."

"Shut up!" Hannah shoved him away and stared at me, her voice tight with panic. "Where is the ring?! Say something!"

Her earlier smugness was gone, and she had even forgotten about the watch. Only panic remained in her eyes.

I looked at her and suddenly found it a little laughable.

She did not care whether I lived or died, but she cared a lot about a ring. "I sold it..."

Before I could finish, the sales associate screamed. "The watch is missing!"

The store instantly fell into chaos. Before I could react, Wyatt bumped into me with a panicked look on his face. Then, something heavy dropped into my arms.

Wyatt pointed at me and said, "He has the watch. He stole it!"

My eyes widened in disbelief, and I quickly denied it. "It wasn't me. Wyatt shoved it into my arms. Check the security cameras if you don't believe me!"

Wyatt's eyes instantly reddened. "Nathan, how could you accuse me like that? Everyone saw you rush over just now to ask Hannah for money, and you even sold your wedding ring because you were short on cash! But no matter how badly you need money, you can't steal!"

As soon as he finished, the people around us began whispering. I know that they had already decided I was the thief from the way they looked at me.

Hannah's expression cooled little by little. "Nathan, you have disappointed me so much."

She snatched the watch from my arms and handed it back to the sales associate, then pulled Wyatt away. "Wyatt wouldn't lie! Nathan, you should admit it when you've done something wrong. Don't make me look down on you even more!"

She turned to the security guards and said, "Call the police. Someone like him needs to learn a lesson."

Right then, it felt like a piece of me was ripped out. The pain was so sharp that I almost forgot to breathe. Hannah knew me better than anyone after so many years of marriage. She knew that no matter what happened, I would never steal.

But she still believed in Wyatt without a second thought.

The pain in my chest soon spread through my whole body, but I clenched my teeth and barely managed to stay upright.

The police arrived quickly and took me to the station.

As I lay on the cold floor of the holding cell, the pain in my chest grew worse, and my mind started to blur.

In the end, I even thought that dying here might not be so bad. At least then I would not have to think about the cemetery plot anymore.

Early the next morning, I was released. Only when I saw Hannah did I realize she had gotten me out.

"You..." Hannah looked surprised at how haggard I looked, and her expression softened with pity.

Just as she was about to speak, I cut her off numbly. "Why was I released?"

Hannah looked a little uncomfortable. After a while, she said quietly, "The police checked the security footage. Wyatt really did steal the watch."

I kept asking, "Then why wasn't Wyatt brought in?"

"I paid the store back and bailed him out." Hannah's voice dropped even lower. "Wyatt had never seen anything nice before, and he only made one stupid mistake. We should give him a chance to correct himself. We can't ruin his life over this..."

Looking at the way she defended Wyatt, I suddenly found everything so pointless. When I was falsely accused, she wanted the police to teach me a lesson right away. Now that it was Wyatt, she wanted to give him a chance.

Once I stopped laughing at my own mistake, I realized something was wrong. "Where did you get the money to pay his bail?"

"There is one more thing we need to inform you of." The officer's expression turned serious as he continued speaking to Hannah."During our investigation into Wyatt, we discovered that he is not some homeless beggar. He's a wanted fugitive who has been on the run for years and is suspected of multiple fraud and theft cases. He approached you with a plan from the beginning."A fugitive...Wyatt was actually a fugitive?!Hannah felt the world around her start to crumble. For the sake of a fugitive, for the sake of a scammer who had fooled her on purpose, she had caused the death of the husband who had loved her with all his heart. Regret and grief swallowed Hannah whole. She could no longer stand and collapsed to the floor, tears streaming down her cheeks and onto the ground. What had she been doing for the past six months?!Lost in despair, Hannah did not notice the sudden commotion around her.By the time she realized what was happening, Wyatt had already taken her hostage with

  • Toxic Compassion   Chapter 11

As Hannah listened to the doctor, she felt as though she was being stabbed in her heart repeatedly. When Nathan said he needed surgery, it was true. When he said he only had one month left, that had also been true. And what had she been doing? She had been traveling the world with another man, buying him designer clothes, a luxury watch, and accusing Nathan of being petty and having no compassion.Even when Nathan had been hit by a truck and was on the verge of death, she had chosen to protect the murderer and thought about making Nathan apologize to him instead."I'm sorry... I'm so sorry..." Hannah collapsed beside Nathan's body and sobbed until it felt as though she were being torn apart from the inside."Nathan, I'm sorry. Wake up... Just scold me. You can hit me. Just wake up..." But no matter how she cried and begged, Nathan would never open his eyes again.Hannah finally handled the paperwork to claim Nathan's body. But because she had spent so much money on Wyatt, she ha

  • Toxic Compassion   Chapter 10

Hannah did not have the courage to believe anything the two officers revealed. She shook her head as she pushed the death certificate away. "No... This isn't him... This is a fake! This is doctored! You must have made a mistake!"But the officer ignored her and took out a tablet. They opened a video and continued. "We obtained the footage from the security camera at the intersection. It clearly shows Mr. Ford deliberately pushing Mr. Peters into traffic. Mr. Peters grabbed him on instinct, which caused both of them to get hit."As previously stated, he died because his injuries were too severe, compounded by the serious illness he already had. Doctors were unable to resuscitate him."The footage was a little blurry, but it clearly showed Wyatt with a vicious smile on his face as he suddenly shoved Nathan toward the road. When Nathan stumbled, he grabbed Wyatt's arm. The brakes screeched as the two of them rolled onto the pavement together. Blood soon spread across the ground.Hanna

During the days Wyatt spent in the hospital, unease gnawed at him nonstop. He kept feeling as if something bad was about to happen. He desperately wanted to run, but his injuries kept him in bed, and Hannah stayed by his side the whole time, leaving him no chance to escape. He cursed Nathan and Hannah in his heart and turned all his unease into the urge to spend recklessly.Hannah watched the money in her hand dwindle day by day and wanted to tell him to stop, but when she saw Wyatt covered in injuries, her sympathy came back, and she ultimately said nothing. She thought to herself in her heart, 'Nathan's paycheck for the next month will still take some time to come in. Maybe I could just make him pick up some side gigs to earn some extra money. His jealousy caused Wyatt's injury, so it's only right that Nathan pay for them.'With that thought in mind, Hannah found Nathan's number and unblocked him.As soon as she did, countless missed calls and messages from Nathan's phone poppe

  • Toxic Compassion   Chapter 8

Hannah took good care of Wyatt at the ward. She never hesitated to buy him whatever he wanted to eat or drink, and she would even comfort him, saying, "Wyatt, don't worry about the money. Nathan still has a lot of emergency cash left from what I found last time. Just tell me what you want to eat, and I'll buy it for you."Wyatt nodded, secretly mocking Hannah for being so ridiculously stupid, but his expression was one full of concern. "Hannah, I'm really happy you treat me so well. But I'm also scared that Nathan will hurt me again because he's jealous. Maybe I should leave after I'm discharged."He knew Hannah had no money left for him to spend, so he was already planning to leave anyway. But Hannah had no idea what he was thinking. When she heard that, she immediately took his hand and promised him. "Don't worry. Once he can't fake his death anymore, I'll make him apologize to you. If he refuses, I'll threaten him with divorce. He loves me so much that he'll definitely give in."

  • Toxic Compassion   Chapter 7

"How is that even possible? Wasn't it just a minor car accident? Wyatt is fine, so how could Nathan be dead?" Hannah asked as she stood frozen in disbelief. In that moment, she experienced a sharp, stabbing pain in her chest. The doctor then said, "Mr. Peters had already been given notice that he had around one more month to live because he missed the surgery he needed. His body had deteriorated badly enough to the point that it could no longer produce blood properly. Even a minor accident would be enough to kill him."Hannah's face turned even paler. When Nathan had called previously and asked her for money for the surgery, it turned out he had not been worried she would spend the money on Wyatt. He had truly been sick. When he said he only had one month left, that had been true, too.No wonder he had kept talking about buying a cemetery plot…And yet she had not believed a single word he said from beginning to end. That was why he had died so young…Regret swallowed Hannah whol

I remembered that Hannah had spent all our savings long ago. She lowered her head and said, "I took it from the pocket of your coat. For a second, I wondered if I had heard her wrong. Wyatt had sent me into an allergic shock, yet I was supposed to pay for his tuition?I refused without even thinking.
