Chapter 2

Author: Sweetie Moore
I dragged myself home, exhausted. I had barely opened the door when I saw Hannah lying in Wyatt's arms on the couch, the two of them laughing as they watched the television.

Hannah quickly pulled away from Wyatt when she heard the sound.

She looked at me with an annoyed look on her face. "So, you actually remembered to come home? Do you know Wyatt had to carry all the luggage because you didn't pick us up? He was exhausted. Can't you have a little more compassion?!"

I ignored her and calmly took off my shoes by the door, but that only made Hannah more irritated. She got up and walked toward me, but Wyatt quickly tried to calm her down. "Nathan was probably busy with work. He didn't mean it. Don't be mad, Hannah. I'm not tired. Oh, right. Nathan, Hannah and I brought you a gift."

He then walked over as if he was presenting me with a treasure and handed me a box. Inside was a scarf printed with some landmarks. It was made of cheap synthetic fabric, with rough threads sticking out along the edges.

The moment I saw it, my throat physically tightened. I was severely allergic to that kind of fabric. The last time I had accidentally touched it, I had been rushed straight to the emergency room. I yelled, "Take it away!"

When Wyatt heard that, he pushed the scarf even closer. "Nathan, I picked this out especially for you. Don't you like it?"

"I said take it away!" My breathing was already turning ragged.

"Nathan, what kind of attitude is that?!" Hannah snatched the box and shoved it into my arms. "Wyatt was kind enough to bring you a present. Who are you making that face for?!"

The synthetic fabric brushed my wrist, and a red rash broke out instantly. I immediately threw the box onto the floor.

Wyatt put on a hurt expression and said, "Even if you don't like it, you don't have to throw it away."

Hannah stared at me, barely holding back her anger. "Nathan! What gives you the right to throw Wyatt's gift away?! Apologize to him right now!"

But by then, I could not speak anymore. My throat had swollen to the point of being blocked as my vision began to blur. I staggered toward the living room, where I kept my allergy medicine. But after only two steps, Hannah grabbed my arm. "You're not walking away from this. Apologize to Wyatt."

"Medicine. Get my medicine..." I pointed at the drawer as it grew harder to breathe, and my chest was so tight it felt ready to collapse.

Hannah slapped my hand away. "Stop the act! I let it go last time when you faked being sick to lie to me, and now you're doing it again? I'm telling you, this trick won't work. Apologize to Wyatt right now!"

My vision had already started going black, and Hannah's scolding grew farther away.

Before I hit the floor, I saw Hannah rush toward me in a panic…

-

When I finally regained consciousness, Hannah was lying beside my bed, shadows under her eyes.

When she heard me move, she took my hand and said in a guilty tone, "I'm sorry, Nathan. I forgot you were allergic to the material that was used to make that fabric. I thought you were pretending to be sick again."

I found it so laughable.

During all our years of marriage, Hannah had always chosen my clothes carefully, worried she might accidentally buy something made from that material and trigger my allergy. But after Wyatt had lived in our home for only half a year, she was now telling me she had forgotten.

I sneered and pulled my hand back.

Hannah froze, then quickly frowned. "Do you have to act like this? Wyatt didn't do it on purpose. He never went to school. How was he supposed to know anything about allergies? How about this? To keep Wyatt from hurting you in the future, why don't you send him to school using that money? How does that sound?"

"There is one more thing we need to inform you of." The officer's expression turned serious as he continued speaking to Hannah."During our investigation into Wyatt, we discovered that he is not some homeless beggar. He approached you with a plan from the beginning."A fugitive...Wyatt was actually a fugitive?!Hannah felt the world around her start to crumble. For the sake of a fugitive, for the sake of a scammer who had fooled her on purpose, she had caused the death of the husband who had loved her with all his heart. Regret and grief swallowed Hannah whole. She could no longer stand and collapsed to the floor, tears streaming down her cheeks and onto the ground. What had she been doing for the past six months?!Lost in despair, Hannah did not notice the sudden commotion around her.By the time she realized what was happening, Wyatt had already taken her hostage with

As Hannah listened to the doctor, she felt as though she was being stabbed in her heart repeatedly. When Nathan said he needed surgery, it was true. When he said he only had one month left, that had also been true. And what had she been doing? She had been traveling the world with another man, buying him designer clothes, a luxury watch, and accusing Nathan of being petty and having no compassion.Even when Nathan had been hit by a truck and was on the verge of death, she had chosen to protect the murderer and thought about making Nathan apologize to him instead."I'm sorry... I'm so sorry..." Hannah collapsed beside Nathan's body and sobbed until it felt as though she were being torn apart from the inside."Nathan, I'm sorry. Wake up... Just scold me. You can hit me. Just wake up..." But no matter how she cried and begged, Nathan would never open his eyes again.Hannah finally handled the paperwork to claim Nathan's body. But because she had spent so much money on Wyatt, she ha

Hannah did not have the courage to believe anything the two officers revealed. She shook her head as she pushed the death certificate away. "No... This isn't him... This is a fake! This is doctored! You must have made a mistake!"But the officer ignored her and took out a tablet. They opened a video and continued. "We obtained the footage from the security camera at the intersection. It clearly shows Mr. Ford deliberately pushing Mr. Peters into traffic. Mr. Peters grabbed him on instinct, which caused both of them to get hit."As previously stated, he died because his injuries were too severe, compounded by the serious illness he already had. Doctors were unable to resuscitate him."The footage was a little blurry, but it clearly showed Wyatt with a vicious smile on his face as he suddenly shoved Nathan toward the road. When Nathan stumbled, he grabbed Wyatt's arm. The brakes screeched as the two of them rolled onto the pavement together. Blood soon spread across the ground.Hanna

During the days Wyatt spent in the hospital, unease gnawed at him nonstop. He kept feeling as if something bad was about to happen. He desperately wanted to run, but his injuries kept him in bed, and Hannah stayed by his side the whole time, leaving him no chance to escape. He cursed Nathan and Hannah in his heart and turned all his unease into the urge to spend recklessly.Hannah watched the money in her hand dwindle day by day and wanted to tell him to stop, but when she saw Wyatt covered in injuries, her sympathy came back, and she ultimately said nothing. She thought to herself in her heart, 'Nathan's paycheck for the next month will still take some time to come in. Maybe I could just make him pick up some side gigs to earn some extra money. His jealousy caused Wyatt's injury, so it's only right that Nathan pay for them.'With that thought in mind, Hannah found Nathan's number and unblocked him.As soon as she did, countless missed calls and messages from Nathan's phone poppe

Hannah took good care of Wyatt at the ward. She never hesitated to buy him whatever he wanted to eat or drink, and she would even comfort him, saying, "Wyatt, don't worry about the money. Nathan still has a lot of emergency cash left from what I found last time. Just tell me what you want to eat, and I'll buy it for you."Wyatt nodded, secretly mocking Hannah for being so ridiculously stupid, but his expression was one full of concern. "Hannah, I'm really happy you treat me so well. But I'm also scared that Nathan will hurt me again because he's jealous. Maybe I should leave after I'm discharged."He knew Hannah had no money left for him to spend, so he was already planning to leave anyway. But Hannah had no idea what he was thinking. When she heard that, she immediately took his hand and promised him. "Don't worry. Once he can't fake his death anymore, I'll make him apologize to you. If he refuses, I'll threaten him with divorce. He loves me so much that he'll definitely give in."

  • Toxic Compassion   Chapter 7

"How is that even possible? Wasn't it just a minor car accident? Wyatt is fine, so how could Nathan be dead?" Hannah asked as she stood frozen in disbelief. In that moment, she experienced a sharp, stabbing pain in her chest. The doctor then said, "Mr. Peters had already been given notice that he had around one more month to live because he missed the surgery he needed. His body had deteriorated badly enough to the point that it could no longer produce blood properly. Even a minor accident would be enough to kill him."Hannah's face turned even paler. When Nathan had called previously and asked her for money for the surgery, it turned out he had not been worried she would spend the money on Wyatt. He had truly been sick. When he said he only had one month left, that had been true, too.No wonder he had kept talking about buying a cemetery plot…And yet she had not believed a single word he said from beginning to end. That was why he had died so young…Regret swallowed Hannah whol
