The plastic packet hit the glass coffee table with a sound that echoed like a gunshot in the silent penthouse.

Maya stared at the DNA swab kit. Her throat went dry, her heart hammering against her ribs so hard she thought Julian must be able to see it through her blouse.

You can’t be serious, she whispered, her voice trembling.

I am always serious, Maya. Julian’s voice was smooth, dark, and terrifyingly calm. He walked around the table, closing the distance between them until he was towering over her. You claim the father is dead. You claim there is no record of him. Yet you have a son who shares my intellect and a daughter who has my eyes.

He leaned down, placing a hand on the back of the sofa, boxing her in.

Coincidences happen, he murmured, his face inches from hers. But I don't believe in coincidences. I believe in data. And I intend to get it.

Maya’s mind raced. She was a software engineer, trained to solve logic puzzles, but this was a trap with no exit code. If he swabbed Leo, the results would be a 99.9% match. He would take them. He would take her children, and with his army of lawyers, she would never see them again.

She had to stall.

You can't just swab a five-year-old child without a warrant, she said, forcing her chin up. It’s illegal. It’s invasive.

I am Julian Thorne, he replied, his eyes cold. The law is a suggestion in this city, not a rule. And as for invasive... I think breaking into my servers was invasive, don't you? Consider this a fair trade.

He reached for the kit.

No! Maya lunged forward, grabbing his wrist.

Currents of electricity shot through her arm at the contact. Julian froze. He looked down at her hand gripping his wrist, then back up to her face. His expression shifted from cold calculation to something hotter, something more dangerous.

Don't touch me unless you mean it, he warned, his voice dropping an octave.

Maya snatched her hand back as if she had been burned.

Please, she begged, changing tactics. Appealing to his mercy was a long shot, but it was all she had. They are asleep, Julian. Leo is terrified of strangers. If you go in there now, wake him up, and stick a swab in his mouth, you won't get the truth. You’ll just traumatize a little boy who has already been through enough.

Julian paused. He looked toward the stairs, where the children were sleeping. For a moment, the ruthlessness in his eyes softened, replaced by a flicker of doubt.

He is not afraid of strangers, Julian countered quietly. He stood up to me in that apartment. He looked me in the eye.

He was acting brave because he was protecting his sister, Maya said. But he is just a child. Please. Give us tonight. Let them sleep.

Julian studied her. He was dissecting her words, looking for the lie. He tapped his fingers against his thigh—a nervous tic she remembered from five years ago.

Fine, he said abruptly, stepping back.

Maya let out a shaky breath.

But, Julian added, raising a finger, this is not a negotiation. Tomorrow morning, my private doctor will come here. He will perform the test properly. If you try to run, my security team will stop you. If you try to tamper with the test, I will know.

He walked over to the minibar and poured himself another drink, his back to her.

Go to bed, Maya. You have a big day tomorrow.

Maya didn't wait to be told twice. She grabbed her purse and practically ran up the stairs, her legs shaking with every step.

The guest bedroom was dark and quiet.

Maya closed the door behind her and leaned against it, sliding down until she hit the floor. She buried her face in her hands.

She had bought herself twelve hours. That was it.

She crawled over to the bed where Leo and Mia were sleeping. They looked so peaceful, unaware that their mother was playing a high-stakes game of poker with a billionaire.

Leo shifted in his sleep, his hand reaching out to grab his tablet on the nightstand. Even in his dreams, he was connected.

Maya looked at the tablet. An idea sparked in her mind.

Julian had security. He had money. He had power. But Leo... Leo had access.

She shook her son gently. Leo. Leo, baby, wake up.

Leo groaned, rubbing his eyes. Mom? Is the dragon gone?

Shh, she whispered, pulling him into a sitting position. Listen to me. I need you to do something for me. Something very important.

Leo blinked, instantly alert. Is it a mission?

Yes, Maya said, glancing at the door to make sure Julian wasn't listening. I need you to access the building's security protocols. Can you loop the camera feed in the hallway?

Leo smirked, grabbing his tablet. Child's play. Why?

Because, Maya said, her eyes hardening with determination. We need to make sure Mr. Thorne doesn't see what we’re about to do.

She wasn't going to run. Running was impossible; the penthouse was a fortress. She had to stay and fight. But to fight Julian Thorne, she needed leverage.

And she had the ultimate leverage hidden in the bottom of her suitcase.

She walked over to her luggage and unzipped the hidden compartment. She pulled out the black suit jacket. It still smelled like rain and sandalwood. She reached into the lining and felt the small, hard rectangle.

The prototype chip.

She didn't know what was on it. She didn't know why Julian wanted it so badly. But if he was willing to hunt her for five years over it, it was valuable.

Leo, she whispered. Can you read what’s on this chip without connecting to the internet?

Leo took the silver chip, holding it up to the moonlight. This architecture... it’s old school. But powerful. Yeah, I can read it.

Do it, Maya commanded. Tell me what Julian Thorne is hiding.

Leo slotted the chip into a port on his modified tablet. He typed a few commands. A progress bar appeared on the screen.

decrypting... 10%... 40%...

Suddenly, the screen flashed red.

Whoa, Leo whispered, his eyes widening. Mom, this isn't just a prototype. This is a key.

A key to what?

To everything, Leo said, turning the screen toward her. It’s a backdoor key to the entire global banking network. If someone had this, they could drain every bank account in the world in ten seconds.

Maya gasped, covering her mouth.

She wasn't holding a piece of hardware. She was holding a digital nuclear weapon.

No wonder he hunted me, she realized. He thinks I’m a super-criminal.

Just then, the doorknob turned.

Maya froze. Leo shoved the tablet and the chip under his pillow.

The door creaked open.

Julian stood in the doorway, his silhouette framed by the hallway light. He wasn't wearing his jacket anymore. His tie was undone. He looked tired, and dangerous.

I forgot to mention one thing, he said, his voice low.

Maya stood up, blocking his view of Leo. What?

Julian stepped into the room. He didn't look at the kids. He looked only at her.

My doctor will be testing all three of us tomorrow, he said.

Maya frowned. Why you?

Because, Julian said, stepping closer, his blue eyes burning with intensity. If that boy is mine, I need to know where he gets his talent. But more importantly... if he is mine, that means you and I have unfinished business.

He reached out, brushing a stray lock of hair behind her ear. His fingers lingered on her skin, sending a shiver down her spine.

Sleep well, Maya. Tomorrow, everything changes.

He turned and left, closing the door softly.

Maya stood in the dark, her heart racing. He didn't know about the chip. He didn't know she had the leverage.

But as she touched the spot where his fingers had grazed her skin, she realized the chip wasn't the only dangerous thing in this room.

The attraction between them was still there. It was a live wire, sparking in the dark. And if she wasn't careful, it would burn her alive before she ever had a chance to escape.

Twenty Years LaterMidnight in Manhattan belonged entirely to Leo Thorne. From the apex of the newly reinforced Thorne Tower, the twenty-five-year-old billionaire looked out over the glittering, rain-slicked city skyline. The world knew him as the Ice Prince. With Julian and Maya officially retired to the quiet, impenetrable paradise of Aegis, the crushing weight of Thorne Tech—a global empire built on secrets, code, and cold, hard steel—had fallen entirely onto Leo’s broad shoulders. He wore the crown flawlessly. Standing by the floor-to-ceiling glass, the ambient light of the city illuminated a man who had inherited his father’s physically intimidating, massive frame and striking, predatory ice-blue eyes. But beneath that lethal exterior operated a mind engineered by his mother—terrifying, unmatched, and relentlessly brilliant. He was colder than Julian ever was. To Leo, human connections were a liability. Emotions were simply unoptimized code. His empire was absolute, his rule unq

  • Trapped by the CEO   Epilogue: The Glass Covenant

The storm that had battered the shores of Aegis was entirely gone, replaced by the brilliant, golden warmth of a Mediterranean sunset. The island fortress, once a brutal battleground of concrete and blood, had been perfectly restored into an untouched, luxurious paradise. There were no more alarms. No more tactical vests. No more running. Maya Thorne stood before the floor-to-ceiling mirrors in the master suite, her breath catching softly in her throat. She wasn't wearing matte-black Kevlar or boots stained with snow. She was draped in a breathtaking, custom-tailored slip dress of pure white silk that clung flawlessly to her curves. Her dark hair cascaded in loose, elegant waves over her bare shoulders, and her honey-brown eyes were bright, clear, and completely free of shadows. Her memories were a beautifully intact mosaic. She remembered every single second of her life with Julian, but the harrowing weeks of her amnesia had entirely reshaped the way she loved him. She didn't just

The red laser of Julian’s shotgun rested perfectly dead-center on the Old Man’s forehead. The air in the subterranean corridor was suffocatingly thick, heavy with the smell of cordite and blood. "Drop the detonator," Julian rumbled, his voice a demonic, vibrating force of nature. He didn't flinch. He didn't lower the weapon. The Ice King did not negotiate for the lives of his children."Or what, Julian?" The Old Man smiled, his thumb pressing firmly against the black switch. "You pull that trigger, my thumb relaxes, the circuit completes, and the ventilation shafts above your children collapse. It is a simple, flawless mechanism. A dead-man's switch."Maya stared at the small, black device in her father’s hand. The amnesiac would have broken down in tears. But the Queen of Thorne Tech, her memories completely restored, looked at the device with the cold, terrifying precision of a master architect. She noticed the tiny, rapidly pulsing green LED on the side of the detonator casing.

Julian didn't waste another syllable on Elena Vance. He shifted his weight, driving the heel of his combat boot into the pressure point on her neck. The assassin's eyes rolled back, and she went entirely limp on the concrete."Move," Julian commanded, his voice a low, terrifying growl. He grabbed Maya’s hand, his thick fingers intertwining with hers, and they sprinted out of the ruined command center. The corridors of Aegis were bathed in the violent, strobing red of the emergency backup lights. The klaxons wailed, but Maya’s entire world narrowed down to the bruising, reassuring grip of her husband’s hand. They hit the stairwell, descending deeper into the island’s bedrock. In her rush, Maya slipped on a patch of slick concrete.Julian caught her instantly. His massive arm wrapped around her waist, lifting her effortlessly against his heavy tactical vest before she could even scrape her knee. He didn't just steady her; he held her flush against his racing heart for a split second in

The heavy, titanium blast doors of the command center groaned, the hydraulic locking pins violently retracting. Maya Thorne didn't freeze. The amnesiac who would have cowered in the corner was completely gone. The Queen of Thorne Tech moved with blinding, lethal instinct. She dove under the central command table, her hand snatching the heavy 9mm sidearm Julian had left on the console. The doors hissed fully open. Through the threshold stepped Elena Vance. The Vanguard assassin was soaking wet, her blonde hair plastered to her skull, her right arm strapped tightly in a tactical sling from the bullet Maya had put in her shoulder on the tower roof. But her left hand held a suppressed submachine gun, and she was flanked by two elite Vanguard Ghosts. "I know you're in here, Maya," Elena's voice echoed in the cavernous room, dripping with venomous grief. "The EMP fried your cameras, but the thermal scan shows you cowering behind the servers."Maya tightened her grip on the pistol. She w

The entire island shuddered as the first Vanguard cruise missile slammed into the invisible, localized electromagnetic shield generated by the Aegis core. Dust rained from the reinforced concrete ceiling of the command center. The analog radar was a sea of aggressive red dots—fast-attack boats tearing through the crashing waves, completely surrounding Julian Thorne’s island fortress.Julian turned away from the blast doors. He crossed the war room in two massive strides, his tactical gear clinging to his heavily muscled frame. He didn't say a word. He grabbed Maya by the waist, his large hands gripping her hips with bruising, desperate possession, and hauled her flush against his chest. He crushed his mouth over hers. It wasn't a sweet kiss; it was a violent, breathless collision of absolute devotion and primal terror. It tasted of adrenaline, impending war, and the fierce, burning vow of a man who refused to die today. Maya gasped into his mouth, her hands tangling in his dark hair
