Chapter 3

Author: Midnight Manuscript
Ezra walked in holding a glass of warm water.

"Who's on the phone?" he asked, looking suspicious.

Before I could answer, Rhea suddenly screamed from upstairs. "Ah! It hurts!"

Ezra's expression changed instantly. The glass in his hand shattered on the floor, sending shards flying onto my foot.

He didn't even spare me a glance when he turned around and rushed out.

"Rhea, what happened?" he shouted.

Over the phone, Clara asked in confusion, "Piper, is everything okay?"

I closed my eyes and said softly, "It's nothing, Ms. Smith. I'll send the admission confirmation form on time."

Rhea had only nicked her finger while peeling an apple. It was barely even deep enough to draw blood.

Yet Ezra was so worried that he called the family doctor, turning the whole villa upside down in the middle of the night.

I looked at the cut on my foot from the broken glass and quietly wiped away the blood with a tissue.

The next day, it was my senior class graduation party.

I didn't want to go, but my homeroom teacher, Tara Boyd, had specifically texted me. She said she needed to hand me my student records and my guaranteed admission offer.

The moment I opened the private room door, the chatter stopped.

Everyone looked at me with open curiosity and mockery.

"Well, well. Look who it is. Isn't this our class's former top student, Piper Steele? Why did you disappear right before the SATs?" someone asked.

"I heard she couldn't handle the pressure and had a breakdown right before the exam," another classmate chimed in. "She was too scared to even walk into the exam room. What a joke."

"Rhea's impressive. Not only did she score well, but with that special admission opportunity, she's guaranteed a spot at Arvona University," one classmate said.

I found a corner and sat down, ignoring the harsh remarks.

Rhea sat in the middle of the group, wearing a custom-made Chanel dress. It was the same outfit Mom had originally bought for my 18th birthday.

Ezra sat beside her, taking the drinks people offered her on her behalf.

"Everyone, that's enough. Piper only missed the SATs because she was sick," Rhea said softly.

Ezra nodded. "That's right. Piper wasn't feeling well. But it's okay. I'll be right there to help her retake it next year."

The private room erupted in cheers and admiration.

"Ezra, you're so devoted!"

"Piper, you don't know how lucky you are. Having Ezra stay by your side while you retake the SAT is something you should be grateful for!"

I only felt like I was going to be sick.

I stood up and walked toward the door.

"Where are you going?" Ezra frowned and got up to stand in my way. "Everyone is worried about you, and you can't even show some gratitude?"

"Move." I stared at him.

Rhea quickly came over and grabbed Ezra's arm.

She said, "Ezra, don't push her. She's already upset."

The moment she walked over, her ankle suddenly gave out, and she fell toward me.

The cup of hot tea in her hand flew straight toward my face.

I instinctively raised my right hand to block it. The hot tea splashed onto my already swollen, infected hand. The pain made me recoil.

Ezra reacted quickly and pulled Rhea into his arms.

To keep Rhea from falling, he grabbed the wrist of the hand I used to shield myself and shoved me away.

I slammed hard against the door, and cold sweat instantly soaked my back.

"Piper, are you okay?" Rhea cried out as she trembled in Ezra's arms. "I didn't do that on purpose. I slipped because I stepped on water."

Ezra looked at me on the floor. There wasn't even a hint of guilt in his eyes.

"Piper, are you done causing trouble?" he asked. "Rhea almost fell. Instead of helping her, you tried to push her?"

I gritted my teeth and supported my limp right hand with my left.

Just then, the door to the private room opened from outside.

Tara walked in with a thick stack of folders.

"What's going on here? If you're here for a party, then act like it." She looked at the mess on the floor and sighed.

She placed the folders on the table and looked around for me. "Where's Piper? Your folder is here, and your—"

"Ms. Boyd." Yves had arrived at some point. "I'm Piper's brother. Since she didn't take the SAT, I'll just take her student records home. There's no need to trouble you."

He reached for the folder with my name on it, ready to open it.

"Why is her folder that thick? There isn't even a transcript in there. Don't tell me it's packed with disciplinary reports." Someone nearby sneered.

Yves' finger was already hooked around the string sealing the folder.

Once it was opened, the admission confirmation form from Jeston University would fall right out.

My heart started racing.

The Steeles also sought me out.Marie looked haggard, and her hair had completely turned gray. She held my hand and wept with anguish. "Piper, please help your dad. We don't have enough money for the surgery. He's going to die. Please save your brother, too. The loan sharks have driven him to the point where he's thinking of ending his life."I pulled my hand away and looked at her frostily. "You've come to the wrong person. My last name is Shaw, not Steele. I don't have a dad or a brother.""But you're related to them by blood!" Marie yelled.I walked away without responding.Damon died three days later in the hospital because he couldn't afford the surgery. As for Yves, he fell from the third floor while trying to flee from the loan sharks and was left paralyzed.Marie, unable to bear the blow, lost her mind. She scavenged through trash on the street every day, muttering, "Piper, I made some soup for you."Rhea, who was living with a broken leg, had to beg for alms under the o

Henry visited me once in late autumn, when Jeston was carpeted with fallen leaves. He was dressed in a tailored suit, looking vastly different from when I first saw him.He sat down, fixing his gaze on me. "You did me a huge favor. I can give you anything you want."I met his eyes. "I don't need anything."Silence filled the air between us for a long time. Then he spoke. "Ezra is working at a construction site now. He owes the loan sharks money, and they beat him up every day. The Steeles went bankrupt, and Yves had to work as a delivery rider. Unable to cope with the drastic change in her life, Rhea had to work as a hostess at a bar and had her leg broken by a group of thugs."Is this the revenge that you wanted?"I didn't respond, turning my head to look at the autumn leaves. There was no sense of satisfaction in getting my revenge. All I felt was just exhaustion."Thanks for telling me this. Don't come here again."Henry stood up, giving me a long look before he left.Ezra

A month later, a shocking piece of news shook the Locke family. Henry walked into Locke Corporation's shareholders' meeting with the DNA test report. The Locke couple were shocked when they saw the results. After verifying the authenticity of the report, they realized that Henry was indeed their long-lost biological son, while Ezra was merely the child who had been mistakenly switched with him at birth. The revelation instantly made the headlines.Ezra completely broke down. He couldn't accept that he had fallen from the position of the Locke family's heir to a fake with nothing left. The Locke couple had raised him for 20 years, sharing a deep bond with him. But Henry was ruthless. He laid out all the evidence of Ezra's embezzlement of company funds and the money he had secretly transferred to the Steele family over the years.Among them was the bill for the tens of millions he had spent to book the film studio. The Locke couple were devastated.Henry immediately canceled all o

Damon, Marie, and Yves showed up at Jeston University too, stopping me outside my dorm.Marie immediately ran over, tears streaming down her face, wanting to hug me.I dodged her embrace."Piper, I was wrong. I'm so sorry," Marie said. Damon had to support her, as she could barely stand, weeping uncontrollably.Yves looked at me with reddened eyes, his voice hoarse. "Piper, come home with me. Rhea doesn't want the special admission opportunity anymore, and we discovered that she poisoned Lucky herself. We were wrong. We've already kicked her out. You'll be the only daughter of the Steele family."I looked at these people, my so-called blood family, and found the whole situation absurd. "Kick her out? There's no need to do that. She actually fits into the family well.""Piper, your hand…" Damon stared at my empty right sleeve. My arm hadn't been amputated. Due to a lack of strength and nerve pain, I had a habit of keeping it tucked inside my sleeve. "I don't need your concern."

Ezra waited for me at Jeston University's entrance for three days.On the fourth afternoon, I left the library holding a few books. I walked slowly, keeping my right hand in my pocket.Ezra immediately spotted me and rushed over. He had lost a significant amount of weight, and his eyes were bloodshot. Stubble had grown on his chin. His voice trembled when he spoke. "Piper…" I stopped in my tracks and looked at him. "I'm Piper Shaw."Ezra's gaze was fixed on my right hand. He reached out, trying to touch me.I immediately stepped backward. His hand froze mid-air as tears streamed down his face."Let me… take a look at your hand," Ezra begged."For what? Do you want to see how you dislocated it, or how you spent a fortune to have someone break it?"Ezra dropped to his knees abruptly. Even though there were many people around us, he paid them no heed. "I didn't know… Piper, I didn't know they'd actually harm you. I thought it was just an act," he said, grabbing the hem of my shi

Meanwhile, in the banquet hall lounge in Arvona, Marie looked at the time; her face darkened."It's been half a month since Piper contacted us. Her temper is really getting out of hand," she complained.Ezra frowned, dialing my old number on his phone.A cold, automated voice came through the line. "I'm sorry. The number you've dialed is no longer in service."Ezra's face grew grim.Yves walked over and handed him a glass of wine. "Ezra, just let her be. She doesn't have money or a high school diploma. Once she knows how hard it is to survive out there, she'll come running back."With reddened eyes, Rhea said, "Yves, Ezra, is Piper still holding a grudge against me? It's my celebration banquet today. If she doesn't come, people will start gossiping.""Nobody will dare gossip about this." Ezra massaged his temples. "It's your special day. Don't let her ruin it."Soon, the banquet began, and Damon took the stage, thanking the guests. "Today is a day worth celebrating, for my daug
