The silence in the safehouse wasn’t quiet anymore. It pressed on Anais’s ears like static—unsettling, electric, and loud in all the wrong ways. The phrase scorched into the cell wall played on repeat in her mind: Ask her what happened on Day Zero.

Cassian had barely spoken since they found it. He was watching her like she was glass—like he didn’t know whether to protect her or interrogate her.

She hadn’t eaten. Couldn’t. Her mouth was dry, and her chest tightened every time she tried to breathe too deeply.

“Day Zero,” she whispered again, this time not to him, not to anyone—just to herself.

Cassian stood a few feet away, his back to her, shoulders rigid as he stared at Julien’s empty cell. She didn’t know if he was trying to put the pieces together or trying not to break.

She wished he’d say something.

“I don’t know what it means,” she said quietly, finally breaking the silence.

Cassian turned slowly to face her, his expression unreadable.

“That’s the problem,” he said, his voice low.

Let’s be honest—Anaïs hadn’t really known what she was expecting when Julien stepped back into that room. But what she hadn’t prepared for was the way his voice cracked when he said her name. It wasn’t dramatic or scripted. It was just raw.Julien didn’t try to embrace her. He didn’t throw himself at her feet begging for forgiveness. He stood there like a man who wasn’t sure he deserved to be there at all.And then Dahlia came in.That was when the air thinned.Dahlia’s entrance had always come with some kind of noise—heels clacking, voice trailing into a laugh, or perfume announcing her presence seconds before she spoke. But this time? Nothing. She was quiet. Watchful. Like she was observing from a distance even though she was standing just a few feet away.Cassian had gone still, his jaw visibly clenched. And Anaïs? She didn’t move. She didn’t speak. Her arms remained folded, like she was holding herself together.“Why are you here?” she asked Julien. The question wasn’t cold. It wa

Julien didn’t waste a second. As the heavy door clicked shut behind him, his gaze was already sweeping the room. His eyes didn’t miss anything. Not the bruising on Anaïs’s wrist, not the torn strap of her top, not the blood on Cassian’s knuckles. His jaw tensed, but he didn’t speak right away.Anaïs just stared at him. She hadn’t seen him in months. He looked different. Leaner. Tired. But sharp. Like someone who’d been watching everything unfold from the edges, waiting for a moment just like this one.“What the hell are you doing here?” Cassian said, stepping slightly in front of Anaïs, still panting from the fight.Julien cocked his head. “Saving you from yourself. Clearly.”Cassian’s eyes narrowed. “You disappeared.”“And you lost your damn mind,” Julien snapped. “You think I wasn’t watching? You think I didn’t know what Cerberus was doing with that list? What Harlan’s been building behind the scenes?”Anaïs cut in, voice low and shaky. “How long have you been back?”Julien looked a

Cassian didn’t speak for a long time after Anaïs told him what Reid had said. He just stood there in the dark hallway of the safehouse, his arms folded across his chest, jaw tight. The only sound was the low hum of the fridge in the next room and Anaïs’s breathing. He finally looked up. “He said he watched her die?”Anaïs nodded. “He said it so casually, like he’s been sitting on that memory for years.”Cassian’s voice came low, quiet. “That’s because he has. He’s not just some loyal foot soldier. Reid was in deep, long before we ever realized. If he watched Dahlia die… he knows what happened to Julien too.”Anaïs looked away. It was still hard to say Dahlia’s name. “You think he was behind Julien’s disappearance?”“I think he knows exactly what happened that night in Boston,” Cassian said. “And I think this whole mess—the threats, the silence, everything—it all comes back to that.”Anaïs folded her arms, suddenly cold. “Then why hasn’t he said anything? Why now?”Cassian stepped clos

Cassian didn’t sleep. He sat with his back against the cold window, arms resting over his knees, and his eyes locked on the dim city lights that pulsed like a slow heartbeat through the early morning fog. The silence in the room was thick, but it wasn’t peaceful—it was stuffed with everything that hadn’t been said, everything that was too heavy for words.Anaïs had been quiet since she left the bathroom hours ago. She was curled up on the couch now, not in bed. Not near him. She had pulled the throw blanket over herself, but it was more a barrier than warmth. He could hear her breathing, shallow and even, but he knew she wasn’t asleep either. He hated this—whatever this was. This limbo. This distance that had crawled into bed with them and refused to leave. There had been too many blows lately. One after another. And now, silence. He stood, finally, and walked over to the couch.“I can’t do this if you won’t talk to me,” he said softly.Anaïs blinked but didn’t move. “What exactly do

Cassian didn’t move. Not at first. The silence after Anaïs’s words clung to the air like static—thick, hot, waiting for someone to break it. But she didn’t flinch, and he didn’t retreat. They stood there in that narrow corridor—her eyes fierce and glinting with the kind of defiance he used to find annoying but now couldn’t look away from. She’d just told him the one truth he never wanted to hear. That someone inside his own circle had been feeding information to the enemy. And worse, she had proof. He took one slow step toward her. “Who is it?”“You’re not going to like the answer.”“I never do.”Anaïs didn’t soften. “It’s someone close. Someone you trust.” She opened her bag and pulled out the folded file she’d stuffed in there minutes before—Nina had handed it to her just that morning, looking shaken.Cassian took it. His fingers were cold against the paper. He scanned it. Once. Then again. And then his jaw clenched, hard enough she saw the muscle twitch.“No,” he muttered.Anaïs no

Cassian hadn’t said a word since they left the warehouse. He gripped the steering wheel so tightly his knuckles turned pale, the muscles in his jaw flexing with each breath he pulled in. Anaïs sat beside him in silence, heart pounding, her fingers tangled tightly in the hem of her shirt. Neither of them had truly processed what happened back there—the gunshots, the blood, the screams. The face of the man Cassian had put down still floated in her mind like a haunting afterimage. He killed someone. To protect her. That realization didn’t frighten her like it probably should have. It shook her—but it didn’t scare her. What scared her more was how numb he looked now. Like a man who’d locked something inside himself just to survive it.“Cassian—”“Not now.” His voice was low. Raw.She swallowed and nodded, facing the windshield again. The city blurred past them like a silent film. At a red light, he exhaled hard and finally spoke.“I need to clean the wound,” he muttered.“You’re bleeding?
