Alessia’s POV

Looking at the group home in Turin, it was hard to believe it was once a lively place. Now, it was just a skeleton of a building.

The walls were scorched and the windows were blackened. Weeds and faded police tape surrounded it like a sad reminder of what happened. I couldn’t shake the feeling that Luca might have lived—and even died—here. Maybe he was still out there somewhere, alone, and just thinking about it made my heart race.

Nikolai, sitting next to me, interrupted my thoughts. "We shouldn’t stay here long. This place still belongs to someone, and they could be watching."

I agreed, swinging open the car door and stepping out. The gravel crunched under my boots.

When we walked inside, the smell hit me—like rot and burnt things. Everything was charred, and the hallway was a mess with broken bits of wood, melted toys, and pages of children's books turned to ash. The memory of the fire was still strong, even though the physical traces had faded.

“This way,” Nikolai sa

  • Twisted vows    Where the Stars Are Blind (chapt.25)

Alessia’s POVWe took off from Villa Ombra as the sun was coming up.The priest stood by the door, watching us leave, like a ghost that doesn’t want to fade away. I wasn’t fully sure I trusted him, but I felt like he cared for Luca, in his own quiet way. Maybe that’s something special, you know?As the car rolled down the coastal road, those words popped back into my head, stuck there like a tattoo:“Where the stars are blind and the sky opens wide.”I said them out loud. “Where the stars are blind…”Nikolai chimed in, “Could be a metaphor or maybe it’s literal. A place where you can’t see any stars. Like somewhere underground.”“Nah. If that’s the case, the sky wouldn’t be open.” I shook my head. “But this says the sky opens wide.”He shot me a glance. “What do you think it means?”“Something big. Empty. Far away.” I paused for a moment. “Maybe a desert.”He looked puzzled. “A desert?”“Think about it. Where else do the stars seem blind? It’s like the sky just swallows everything and

  • Twisted vows    Villa Ombra (chapt.24)

Alessia’s POVAs we rolled into Syracuse, there was this golden dust in the air, mixed with the salty sea smell and the scent of fresh basil. But the drive through those twisty cliffs felt anything but welcoming. The deeper we got into the old city, I could just sense something heavy, ancient, like it was crumbling and just plain sinister.Nikolai didn’t say a word as he drove.I ran my fingers over Luca’s sketchpad that he'd left behind, trying to remember every detail, every warning. The man in black. Father Marzio. Villa Ombra. The name felt like a ghost of something long gone. When the villa finally came into sight, I knew we’d hit the jackpot. It loomed over us—like some forgotten fortress on a cliff. Ivy was creeping all over its walls, and the stained glass windows, cracked but still holding on, gave it this eerie vibe. The gate looked old too, with this rusty sigil I didn’t recognize—a dove surrounded by thorns.“This doesn’t look like a place for saving kids,” I said quietly.

  • Twisted vows    Sand and Smoke (chapt.23)

Alessia’s POVMarinella was super quiet in the morning. Too quiet, actually. You could hear kids laughing from a school up on the hill, but down by the beach, it was just the sound of the waves and wind. It felt nice and peaceful, but I’d learned that peace can be a bit sketchy, usually meaning someone’s hiding something. So, we decided to split up. Nikolai went to the police station to dig up some records, while I headed to the fisherman’s village. It was a small place with families running little shops by the water—old guys smoking pipes, women drying tomatoes under the sun. Everyone was giving me these sideways glances, like I didn’t fit in.They weren’t wrong. But I wasn’t there to fit in. I was there to find Luca.At a small bar near the pier, I ran into a woman named Rosa. She looked to be in her mid-forties, pretty heavy-set, with salt-and-pepper hair tied back in a bright red bandana. She was pouring coffee without even glancing at me—until I pulled out the photo. It was an ol

  • Twisted vows    The Woman in Marsala( chapt.21)

Nikolai’s POVThe last time I drove this road, I wasn’t sure if I was chasing the past or trying to escape it.This time, I wasn’t alone.Alessia was sitting next to me, quiet, her eyes glued to the vineyards rolling by like waves of green and gold. The Sicilian sun was shining down on her, but her face didn’t show any warmth. It was like she was wearing grief as a kind of armor—smooth, silent, and dangerous.I couldn’t really blame her.I hadn’t earned her trust yet. Maybe I never would. But still, she came along. That meant something. We drove south in silence, and soon the signs for Marsala started popping up. The closer we got, the more the vibe changed—less shiny city life, more dusty, forgotten corners. This place had a history. The kind of old that remembers everything. The kind of old that holds grudges.“She’s waiting for us,” I said softly.Alessia didn’t even look at me. “That’s good.”Lina Fiore lived on the town’s edge, in a stone cottage jammed between overgrown olive tr

  • Twisted vows    His name was Luca ( chapt.20)

Alessia’s POVI couldn’t sleep at all.Even after locking every door, checking the windows twice, and hiding the USB in a drawer I could see from my bed, my eyes just wouldn’t close. It wasn’t fear that kept me awake. It was anger.Angry that my dad could plan something so sinister.Angry that my mom was hiding behind her silence.Angry that someone out there—maybe even watching me—knew where that boy was and didn’t care if he vanished forever.By morning, I felt all tense and sore. I made myself some strong espresso and looked at that photo again. The kid had Elena’s eyes.Big. Searching. So full of a sadness no kid should have to carry.I traced the date with my thumb. April 12, 2020. Palermo. That was two years before Elena passed away. Two years before I married the guy who haunted my mind, even when I wanted to hate him.I needed real answers. No more breadcrumbs, no riddles, and definitely no more secrets. So, I called the one person who could actually help me.“Good morning, si
