The waiter led them through a door Harper hadn't noticed, then a narrow back hall, then straight through the roar of the kitchen. Steam rose from the pots, flames leapt, and knives flashed. Valentina strutted through like she owned that too, and as she passed the line, she called out to a broad-shouldered chef with forearms covered in tattoos. "Looking good, Marco!"

He grinned and tipped his chin.

"Of course you know the chef," Harper muttered.

"Of course I do."

They ended up in a small, dim room with a low sofa, a bar cart, and a long panel of smoked glass on one wall. Through the glass, she could make out a private dining room, dark wood and candles, a long table set for ten.

"Val." Harper's voice came out smaller than she wanted. "What are we doing here?"

"Patience, babe."

"Val."

"A friend of mine owns this place. He texted me. He says Myles is coming here tonight. Soon."

Harper's stomach dropped. It didn't flip. It dropped, like missing the water entirely and hitting the concrete.

"He said it was a client dinner," she whispered.

"I know." Valentina's hand found hers and squeezed. "That's why you need to see it. I'm not telling you what to do. I just think you deserve the truth."

Harper wanted to leave. Every instinct told her to turn around, drive home, put the halibut back on the stove, and keep pretending. But her feet stayed planted. Three years. Three years of excuses, of not now, of I'm so stressed. She needed to know.

So she sat, and she waited.

The door to the private room opened.

Three women walked in first, glossy, glittering, dressed in the kind of dresses that cost a fortune and left nothing to the imagination. High-class escorts, if Harper had to guess, and she did. Each one hung on the arm of a man she recognized. Myles's friends. The same men who'd toasted at her engagement party. Two more men followed, Derek and Owen, each with a woman on his arm.

Harper's heart pounded so loud she could hear it.

Then Myles walked in.

Her Myles. The man who'd cried in the pool. The man who'd begged her to quit because he couldn't live without her.

He was tipsy, his tie loose, his smile lazy and reckless, a smile she hadn't seen in months. And tucked under his arm, tight and possessive, was a blonde in a glittering sequined dress.

A dress that barely covered anything.

And draped over her shoulders was a charcoal blazer. His charcoal blazer. The one Harper had picked out and paid for herself, standing in a department store, imagining how handsome he'd look in it.

The blonde laughed, tipped her head back, and Myles kissed her neck.

Harper didn't breathe. She didn't blink. Behind the smoked glass, a quiet, cold clarity washed over her, like diving into water so freezing it burns.

The cage door hadn't just opened.

It had been unlocked for a long time. And the man who built it was standing in the room, laughing.

The house still smelled like coffee, old paper, and lemon Pledge. The living room was small, dim, and crowded. A plaid couch. A scratched coffee table buried under stopwatches, clipboards, and a jar of peanuts with no lid. Framed photos covered every inch of wall: divers in midair, divers on podiums, divers dripping on the pool deck with their arms slung around each other. Harper found herself in four of them before she made herself stop counting.A ball game murmured on the TV. In front of it sat the two chairs. Ted's brown leather recliner, duct tape on one arm. And the orange armchair with the sagging cushion, where she'd spent a thousand afternoons eating his terrible chili and watching tape of her own mistakes. She sat in the orange chair without being asked. It still smelled faintly of chlorine.Ted lowered himself into the recliner, muted the game, and crossed his arms. Valentina perched on the arm of the couch like she'd bought a front-row ticket."So," Ted said. "Figured you

They left the car in a garage off Guadalupe Street and walked the rest of the way.The campus hadn't changed. Same pale limestone, same red-tile roofs, same squirrels so fat and fearless they practically charged rent. The Tower rose over the oaks with its clock face catching the afternoon sun, and students streamed past on bikes and scooters, earbuds in, backpacks bouncing, sunburned and completely unbothered by anything.Harper used to be one of them. She'd crossed this exact plaza a thousand times with a gym bag over her shoulder and chlorine in her hair, always late for something, always starving. Back then, the biggest problem in her life had been a stubborn back two-and-a-half that kept coming up short. It took a few minutes to notice the looks.A cluster of guys outside the student union went quiet as she passed. One elbowed ano

The Austin heat found Harper the second the terminal doors slid open.It wrapped around her like a towel straight out of the dryer, heavy and warm and smelling faintly of cut grass, hot asphalt, and somebody's barbecue pit miles away. She stopped short on the curb. A man rolling a golf bag nearly clipped her heels."Sorry," she said, and didn't move.Valentina pushed her sunglasses down her nose. "Are you smelling the air?""Shut up. Yes.""Babe, that's a shuttle bus.""It's a Texas shuttle bus."Valentina snorted and waved down the rental car van. While they waited, she scrolled through her phone, the only one of them still connected to the world."Okay. Updates. The video's at four million. Chloe's dentist apparently has a waitlist now. And Keaton booked us a suite."Harper turned. "He what?""At his hotel downtown. The Ashford. Top floor." Valentina held up the screen: a short, polite text, not a single emoji. "I didn't say yes.""Good.""I also didn't say no.""Val.""It has a roo

Beside him, Serena was still going, a bright, bubbly stream of strangers' names and other people's drama. Somewhere around Gorman, Myles stopped hearing it altogether. His mind had already drifted back to the woman who used to ride in that seat.Harper had been quiet. Not dull. Easy. When she did talk, she actually said something. She'd point out a hawk circling over the freeway, or tell him the road they were on used to be a stagecoach route, or repeat something funny her mom used to say at the diner. Somehow it always made the drive go faster. And she'd known when to stop talking. If he came home wrecked, she didn't pepper him with questions. She just made soup. Put on the playlist he liked. Reached over at red lights and squeezed his hand without a word. He'd never noticed how considerate she was. You didn't notice oxygen until it was gone."M

The Rolls-Royce rolled north on the 5 with the windows up and the air conditioning set to sixty-eight, exactly how Myles liked it. Up ahead, the Grapevine climbed into brown hills. Behind him, LA shrank in the mirror. It was Saturday. His grandfather's ninety-second birthday weekend. Every Crawford who mattered would be at the compound by nightfall, and tonight Myles would walk the woman he'd chosen into the old house and watch the whole family fall for her.Everything was going according to plan.Almost everything."Babe, can you not take the curves like that?" Serena flipped down the visor mirror and dabbed concealer over the faint pink mark on her cheek. "I'm trying to fix my face. Literally. Because of that psycho's friend.""It's barely visible.""It's visible to me."Myles glanced at her and sighed through his nose. He'd told her to dress conservatively. Twice. Once over breakfast at the hotel, and again in the elevator. "My grandfather's old-school. Modest. Classy. Think cardig

The TSA agent at LAX looked at Harper's ID, then at her face, then at her ID again."Huh," he said, and waved her through. She didn't ask. She had a feeling she'd find out. She'd slept maybe four hours at the hotel. Twice she'd jolted awake around two a.m., listening for the front door, for uneven footsteps, for someone shouting that he was starving. Both times there was only the hum of the minibar. Both times she lay back down and, for the first time in years, didn't get up for anyone. Her bank app had greeted her this morning with a number she had to read twice. Her friend on Melrose had worked fast: the Birkin, the Chanel, the pearls, the bracelet, all of it gone by nine p.m. and turned into a wire transfer. The ring went last. Harper watched it disappear into a velvet tray and waited to feel something.Nothing came. She thanked the clerk who boxed it up, and that was that. The other bag had gone into the dumpster behind the hotel. The Florence lovers hit the bottom with a crunch t
