Chapter 2

مؤلف: Rosemary
When I woke up, I was lying in a private room at the pack healing center.

Kael sat by the window, reading through a stack of documents.

For a few seconds, neither of us said a word.

Then he stood, took a warm cup of moon-herb tonic from the bedside tray, and brought it to me.

“Drink it. The healer said it helps with blood loss.”

I took the cup from his hand.

“I can do it myself.”

He watched me drink nearly half before he asked, “Does anything still hurt?”

I ignored the question.

“Give me my phone.”

Maybe my tone caught him off guard. He paused for a moment before motioning to the pack steward.

The second my phone was back in my hand, I saw several missed calls.

Kael saw them too.

“Who keeps calling you?”

He had never cared enough to ask before.

“Someone you don’t know.”

His face cooled.

“Selene, how long are you going to keep acting like this?”

Before I could answer, his own phone vibrated.

He glanced at the screen.

Lyra.

The frost in his expression melted almost instantly. He stepped into the corridor to take the call.

By the time he came back, my phone was ringing again.

I answered, and a man’s anxious voice came through at once.

“Selene, you said you’d arrive today. What happened? Did you change your mind?”

“No,” I said softly. “Something came up here. I’ll be there in two days.”

His voice tightened at once. “Two days is too long. Be careful. Don’t let Kael notice anything, especially the papers.”

“I know.”

I looked toward the corridor and lowered my voice.

When Kael returned, the call had already ended.

He must have caught the faint smile still on my face, because his expression darkened.

Then Lyra called again, and whatever he had meant to ask was gone.

Maybe he thought it was one of my cousins. After all, after I became his mate, almost everyone left in my life had been reduced to that.

He picked up his coat.

“Something came up in the territory. I’ll come back tomorrow.”

Tomorrow.

Then the day after that.

Then the day after that.

He never came.

But I still saw him through the videos our mutual friends sent me.

One after another.

Kael taking Lyra to pack banquets.

Kael bringing Lyra to private dinners.

Kael introducing her with a kind of pride he had never once shown for me.

On the day I was discharged, he posted nine photos.

The sunset burned gold behind them. He stood with Lyra on a skydeck above the valley, cupping her flushed face as he kissed her like she was the only woman in the world.

I looked at the post for a while, then left one comment.

Wishing you both a long life, and the heir you wanted.

After leaving the healing center, I did not go back to Blackthorn House.

I went straight to the Moon Registry Hall.

The registrar looked up when I asked for a bond-severance agreement.

“For a claimed mate?” she asked.

“Yes.”

She slid a thin packet across the desk.

“If the claim was made in public but never sealed with a mark, the bond can still be broken by agreement. Both signatures are enough.”

No mark.

No true bond under the Moon.

Just signatures.

Clean and final.

I folded the papers, put them into my bag, and walked back out into the cold.

This time, I would not be the one waiting for mercy.

For several seconds, there was only Lyra’s ragged breathing. Then she broke.“Alpha Kael, please. I was wrong. I lost my mind. Punish me any way you want, but please, please spare the baby—”Her voice collapsed into a scream.I flinched on instinct. The next second, Kael ended the call and took my hand, pressing it against his cheek. His face had gone white with exhaustion.“Later, they’ll send over the operation video. Once you’ve seen it… can you forgive me a little?”“Even a little would be enough.”I pulled my hand away.“You should ask the psychiatric department for an appointment.”To my surprise, he actually smiled.“All right. If that’s what you want.”He believed he had finally understood his mistakes. He believed he still had time to repay everything.Three days later, Kane and I got married.By the time Kael heard and drove to the ceremony like a madman, the officiant had already finished reading the vows.He arrived just in time to hear me say, smiling,“I do.”“No.”He stu

One night, Kane and I came back late from a party.Even from a distance, I could see Kael under the streetlamp, holding the same white roses he always brought. The moment I stepped out of the car, fireworks exploded overhead in sheets of rainbow light.Kane had watched Kael’s old proposal video more times than I knew. He knew that years ago, I had been foolish enough to say yes beneath fireworks like those. The second he saw me glance up, something dark flashed across his face.He strode straight toward Kael.“Are you insane? You think if you recreate the old trick, she’ll suddenly look back?”Then he swung. They crashed into each other so hard that the roses scattered across the pavement.“I’ve never seen anyone more shameless,” Kane spat. “Thirty years old and still playing the pathetic third man outside another woman’s gate.”Kael hit back just as hard.“Third man? Selene was with me for nine years. If she hadn’t lost the pup in that crash and if her body hadn’t been damaged after,

“Why are you saying things like that?”“You expect me to believe you stayed with me for nine years out of gratitude?”No. Of course he didn’t believe it.If I had never loved him, why had I begged for kisses before he left the house? Why had I cried outside his operating room until my eyes swelled shut? Why had everyone who saw us known, without asking, that I loved him more than he deserved? But that was exactly the problem. The more I loved him, the more certain he became that I would never leave. He had forgotten that hearts go numb after enough pain.Kael forced out a smile that looked more painful than tears.“I didn’t know Lyra’s existence hurt you this much. What happened between us and what happened with her were never the same. I was drunk. It was one mistake. Bringing her home was responsibility, nothing more.”“When the baby is born, I’ll send her away. Isn’t that enough?”I shook my head.“Kael, I don’t care what Lyra is to you anymore.”“You only need to understand one thi

Seven hours later, Kael walked out of the studio in a bloodstained white shirt. He bought gifts worth a fortune and nine hundred ninety-nine white roses. He had been awake nearly two full days, but drove himself through the English countryside to a vineyard estate outside London. The whole way there, he rehearsed his apology again and again. In every version, the first thing he said to me was always the same.Selene, I missed you.At last he found me.But the flowers slipped from his hand the moment he saw me.The sun was low. I was standing in the vines, laughing softly, while a tall, striking man held me against his chest and fed me grapes one by one.Kael never got to say the words he had repeated all the way there. He only stood there and asked, “Who is he?”I stiffened for a second. The man beside me, Kane Ashford, tightened his arm around me and smiled.“So you’re Kael Blackthorn. I’ve seen the old pictures. Funny. You look worse in person.”He did it on purpose. Just enough to m

Kael froze.A severance agreement?I wanted to dissolve our bond claim? How was that possible? Then the patriarch saw the report clearly. His hand shook before he struck Kael across the face so hard the sound echoed through the hall.“You wretched boy!”“Look at what you’ve done!”“If I had known it would come to this, I would never have let Selene into this family. You’ve ruined her life.”The old man was so angry he nearly collapsed. The family hurried to support him and lead him away.Once the room had cleared, Kael still stood there, staring at the papers in his hand. The report was brief.Permanent damage after the crash.Complications from the miscarriage.A sharply reduced chance of carrying a pup again. For a long time, he did not move. Then, expressionless, he tore the severance agreement in half.Ignoring Lyra calling after him, he took the keys from the driver and went straight to my family house. The place was dark.He lowered the window and waited outside the gate the enti

The next day, at the healing center, Lyra looked up at Kael with wide, anxious eyes.“Is our baby all right?”He pulled her close at once, his voice soft in a way I had not heard in a long time.“The healer said the pup is fine. Yesterday’s fire didn’t affect it at all.”“That’s such a relief. You’ve been serious ever since we got here. I thought something had happened to the baby.”Her words were innocent enough, but they left him still for a moment. For an instant, the image that rose in his mind was not Lyra.It was me, looking at him through the fire, with nothing left in my eyes.He frowned and checked his phone again, irritated that I still had not replied with so much as a single word.In the past, no matter how coldly he treated me, I had always answered when he called. Now I had learned silence. He told himself it was only pride. After lunch, he escorted Lyra safely home, then went to the territory offices. The moment he stepped inside, his assistant informed him that the Blac
