LOGINChapter 4
Christian's car was a sleek black Aston Martin that probably cost more than I'd make in five years at Knight Industries.
I've had my share of surprises today, but the universe still had a few more up its sleeve.
I lifted an eyebrow, a hint of sarcasm in my voice. “Real subtle,” I remarked.
A warm, deep laugh escaped him, creating a pleasant sensation that ran down my back. “Subtle? I never professed to be,” he admitted.
The leather seat cradled me like butter as I slid in. Christian's scent surrounded me – pine, rain, power, and something else I couldn't quite place. My wolf was practically dancing beneath my skin, eager to be closer to him.
“Down girl. We've had enough male drama for one lifetime.”
But my wolf wouldn't settle. There was something about Christian that called to her, something beyond his obvious Alpha status. She'd never responded to Tom like this, even when our mate bond was new.
“Different,” she insisted. “Stronger. Better.”
I told her to shut up. Again.
“So,” Christian pulled smoothly into traffic, handling the powerful car with casual ease. “Knight Industries?”
Right. My dream job. The one I'd been so excited about this morning, before my whole life imploded. Before I found out, my mate and best friend had been laughing behind my back for months.
“Strategic Operations Manager,” I said, trying to keep my voice steady. “Or at least I was supposed to be.”
Christian's hands tightened on the steering wheel. “Was?”
“Well, it's not like I can show up now.” The words came out more bitter than I intended. “Rejected mates aren't exactly known for their stability. I'm sure Tom and Lily will make sure everyone knows how unstable I am.”
“Fuck them.”
“Excuse me?”
“Fuck them.” Christian's eyes flashed amber, power rolling off him in waves. “You earned that position. Your ex-mate's poor decisions have nothing to do with your capabilities.”
My wolf preened at his defense of us. The broken mate bond seemed to throb less in his presence, like his power somehow dulled the pain.
“You sound pretty confident about someone you just met in a bar,” I said, studying his profile.
Christian's smile held secrets. “Let's just say I have excellent instincts about people. Especially people who refuse to let others define their worth.”
The city lights blurred past as we drove deeper into the financial district. I should have been scared, getting into a car with a strange Alpha. Everything I knew about pack politics and wolf safety screamed that this was a terrible idea.
Instead, I felt… safe. Which was probably a terrible sign about my judgment.
“Most Alphas I know wouldn't approve of a female wolf pursuing a corporate career,” I said, testing the waters.
Christian's jaw tightened. “Most Alphas are stuck in the dark ages. We're predators, not cave wolves. Evolution is supposed to make us stronger, not hold us back with outdated traditions.”
Well, that was… different.
“Your pack must be interesting,” I ventured.
“You could say that.” He navigated through traffic with effortless grace. “We believe in merit over tradition. Strength over status.”
“Sounds too good to be true.”
“Sometimes the best things in life are unexpected.”
The way he looked at me made my skin tingle. My wolf pushed forward again, wanting to be closer.
“Safe,” she insisted. “Home.”
I really needed to have a talk with her about boundaries.
“Where are we going?” I finally asked, though I had a pretty good idea.
“My place.” He glanced at me, his expression giving nothing away. “Unless you'd prefer somewhere else?”
I thought about my apartment, probably being ransacked by Lily right now. About the pack house, where I'd never be welcome again. About hotel rooms paid with Tom's credit cards.
“Your place is fine.”
The car purred to a stop in front of Aurora Tower – the most exclusive high-rise in the city. Sixty stories of glass and steel reaching toward the moon like a modern-day castle.
A valet materialized instantly to take the keys.
“Mr. Knight,” he nodded respectfully.
I nearly tripped over my feet.
Knight. As in Knight Industries. As in, the company I was supposed to start working for on Monday.
Christian's hand steadied me, warm against my lower back. “Careful.”
“You're Christian Knight?” My voice came out embarrassingly squeaky.
“Guilty.” His eyes danced with amusement. “Is that a problem?”
Was it a problem that I'd just spent hours spilling my guts to my future boss? That I'd told him about my mate rejection and pack drama? That I was now going up to his penthouse like some…
“Sophie.” Christian's voice cut through my spiral. “Breathe.”
Right. Breathing. That was a thing.
The elevator ride was silent, tension crackling between us. My wolf was unusually quiet, watching, waiting. She usually hated elevators – too enclosed, too controlled. But she seemed perfectly content to be trapped in a small space with Christian.
“Trust Alpha,” she purred.
I really needed to get her hormones checked.
The elevator opened directly into his penthouse, and I nearly gasped. The space was exactly what you'd expect from a corporate Alpha – sleek, modern, masculine. Floor-to-ceiling windows showcased the city spread out below us like a carpet of stars.
But it was the subtle touches that caught my eye. The pack markings worked into the decor – protection runes carved into doorframes, strength symbols woven into rugs. The moon phase calendar on the wall wasn't just for show; it was an ancient type used by pack leaders to track wolf energy. And those books…
I moved closer to the built-in shelves, drawn by the spine of one particular volume. “Is that a first edition of 'Wolf Pack Dynamics in the Modern Age'?”
Christian appeared beside me, his presence making my skin tingle. “You know Martinson's work?”
“Are you kidding? His theories about pack evolution revolutionized how we think about wolf hierarchy.” I couldn't keep the excitement from my voice. “Most Alphas hate him though. Too progressive.”
“Most Alphas are afraid of change.” Christian's voice dropped lower. “Afraid of wolves who think for themselves.”
This wasn't just any Alpha's territory. This was a pack leader's den. And not just any pack leader – one who collected banned books about pack reformation.
“You're not just CEO of Knight Industries,” I said. It wasn't a question.
“No.” He moved to a sleek bar cart, selecting a bottle of wine that probably cost more than my car. “Would you like to know what else I am?”
I should have said no. Should have run while I still could. Instead, I found myself nodding.
Our fingers brushed as he handed me a glass. Electricity sparked between us, making my wolf surge forward with interest.
“I'm Alpha of the Shadow Ridge Pack,” he said quietly. “The largest, strongest and most progressive pack on the East Coast. And you, Sophie Turner, have been on my radar for quite some time.”
The wine glass nearly slipped from my fingers. “What?”
Christian took a slow sip of his wine, watching me over the rim. “Did you really think you got that job at Knight Industries purely by chance?”
I should have been angry. Should have felt manipulated. Instead, I was just… curious.
“Why me?”
He set his glass down, moving closer. His power rolled over me in waves, but it didn't feel threatening. It felt like... recognition.
“Because I've been looking for someone exactly like you, Sophie Turner. A wolf who understands that our world needs to evolve. A warrior who refuses to be limited by tradition.”
“A rejected mate with pack drama?” The words were bitter.
“A strong female who terrifies weak males.” His voice dropped to a growl. “Your ex-mate rejected you because he couldn't handle your power. I find it… intriguing.”
He was close now, too close. My wolf pushed toward him, drawn by his power, his scent, his everything.
“I'm broken,” I whispered. “The mate bond…”
“Isn't the only kind of bond that matters.” His fingers traced my jaw. “Sometimes the Moon Goddess breaks one bond to make room for something stronger.”
His first kiss was gentle. My wolf surged forward with a howl of triumph.
Everything narrowed to sensation – his hands tangling in my hair, his power wrapping around me like a blanket, his wolf calling to mine in a way that made the broken mate bond feel like a distant memory.
We barely made it to his bedroom.
Clothes scattered like breadcrumbs, marking our path. My fancy blazer. His expensive suit. All the trappings of our human lives discarded as our wolves took control.
Christian worshiped my body like it was something precious, erasing Tom's rejection with each touch. His wolf's power flooded through me, filling all the spaces my broken bond had left behind.
“Mine,” he growled, and my wolf howled in agreement.
The city witnessed our passion through those giant windows, but I was beyond caring. Everything that wasn't Christian faded away – pack politics, mate rejection, corporate drama.
Hours later, he held me close, his arms protective and possessive. My wolf settled peacefully, content in a way she hadn't been since the rejection.
“Sleep,” he murmured, pressing a kiss to my temple.
I should have fought it. Should have asked more questions. Should have worried about Monday morning and pack politics and all the complications this would cause.
Instead, I let myself drift off in his arms, safe in his den, surrounded by his scent.
My last thought before sleep took me was simple:
“The Moon Goddess works in mysterious ways.”
I had no idea just how mysterious things were about to get.
Because while I slept peacefully in Christian's arms, my phone, abandoned in my discarded blazer, was blowing up with messages from Maria.
Chapter 83EpilogueFew months later, I was massive. Thirty-two weeks pregnant and waddling like a penguin. The nursery was finished—sage green walls, Christian's handmade furniture, shelves full of books, and tiny clothes organized by size.Everything was ready except one thing: we still hadn't picked a name.“We've narrowed it down,” I said one evening, lying in bed with Christian's hand on my very active belly. “Three boy names, three girl names. Why can't we just decide?”“Maybe we need to meet them first.” Christian rubbed my stomach as the baby kicked. “Sometimes you just know when you see them.”“That's very zen of you.”He kissed my temple. “I'm serious. We'll know.”At thirty-eight weeks, I woke up at 3 AM with a weird cramping in my lower back. I tried to ignore it and go back to sleep, but it kept coming in waves. After an hour of this, reality hit me.“Christian.” I shook his shoulder. “Christian, wake up.”“Mmm?” He was immediately alert, alpha instincts kicking in. “What
Chapter 82I stared at my phone screen, reading the message for the third time. My blood felt like ice water.Christian's entire body had gone rigid beside me, his Alpha energy practically crackling in the air. “I'm going to find whoever sent this and—”“Christian.” I placed my hand on his arm. “Look at the message again. It's vague. Generic. Someone's just trying to scare us after we won at the council.”“They threatened our baby.”“They made a creepy comment about hoping our baby is healthy. That's not really a threat, it's just… gross and intimidating.” I took a breath. “We will show this to Marcus and Diana tomorrow, implement some security stuff, and then we won't let it steal our joy. Okay?”Christian looked like he wanted to argue but finally nodded tightly. “Okay. But if anything else happens—”“Then we deal with it. Together.”The next morning, Marcus and Diana reviewed the message in Christian's office. Marcus suggested security upgrades. Diana reminded everyone that stress
Chapter 81I woke up at 5 AM with my stomach already staging a rebellion. I threw off the covers and ran for the bathroom, barely making it before everything came up.Strong hands immediately gathered my hair back. Christian's other hand rubbed soothing circles on my back while I was completely miserable over the toilet.“I've got you,” he murmured. “Just breathe. It'll pass.”This was our third morning in a row doing this exact routine. You'd think I'd get used to it, but nope. Still absolutely horrible every single time. When I finally finished, Christian helped me rinse my mouth and guided me back to bed. He'd already set up crackers and ginger tea on the nightstand—Diana's anti-nausea arsenal.“Here.” He placed a cool washcloth on my forehead and helped me sit up against the pillows. “Eat a few crackers slowly.”I nibbled one while he sat beside me, stroking my hair. “You don't have to stay. I know you have morning patrol.”“Marcus can handle it.”“Christian—”“I'm staying until y
Chapter 80“After you,” Alexander said, gesturing toward the massive doors like he owned the place.Christian's jaw clenched, but he nodded and led us forward. His hand never left mine as we walked past Alexander and his group of unfamiliar Alphas. I kept my chin up, Luna posture firmly in place even though my stomach was doing flips that had nothing to do with morning sickness. The council chambers were exactly as imposing inside as out. High ceilings, stone walls, and a massive circular table in the center with chairs for what looked like at least thirty people. Other Alphas and Lunas were already arriving, taking their seats and talking in low voices.“Shadow Ridge sits there.” A council official pointed to two seats near the middle of the circle. “Alpha Christian and Luna Sophie.”We made our way to our designated spots while Marcus and Diana took seats in the gallery behind us—the area reserved for Betas and advisors. I sat down carefully, grateful to be off my feet, and tried to
Chapter 79“We need to go.” I announced. “No.” Christian's voice was flat, final. “You're not going.”My head snapped up. “Excuse me?”“You heard me.” He pocketed his phone, his jaw set in that stubborn way that meant he thought the discussion was over. “You're staying here where it's safe.”“Christian—”“You're pregnant, Sophie.” His voice dropped lower, almost a growl. “You're carrying our child. I'm not letting you walk into a political situation with Alexander Sterling when we just found out.”I took a breath, trying to stay calm. “It says mandatory attendance for all Lunas. If I don't show up, it makes us look weak.”“I don't care how it looks.”“Well, I do.” My voice came out sharper than I intended. “I'm the Luna. I have responsibilities. And hiding at home because I'm pregnant is exactly what Alexander wants—to make me look incompetent.”Christian's eyes flashed. “Your health is more important than politics.”“I'm pregnant, not dying.” I crossed my arms. “Diana said I'm healt
Chapter 78“You're pregnant.” Diana said again, her smile growing wider. The words hung in the air like they were written in neon lights, but my brain couldn't seem to process them. Pregnant. Me. Pregnant.I stared at Diana, my mouth slightly open, waiting for the punchline. This had to be a joke, right? Except Diana didn't joke about medical stuff. And she was looking at me with this patient, knowing expression that said she'd delivered this exact news before and was used to the shocked silence.Christian had gone completely still beside me. Not breathing still. Not moving still. His hand had gone slack in mine, and when I glanced at him, his eyes were wide and unfocused, like someone had hit pause on him.My free hand moved to my stomach without me telling it to. Just pressed flat against the surface that didn't feel any different from it had this morning or yesterday or last week. But apparently, there was something different there now. Someone different.Christian's eyes tracked
Chapter 41The morning light streaming through the dining room windows felt too bright, too happy for what was about to happen. The coffee mug shattered against the tile floor.I froze mid-bite of toast, watching Christian stare at his phone like it had personally insulted him. His jaw was clenched
Chapter 40The annoying buzz of my phone dragged me from sleep at an ungodly hour. I groaned, burying my face deeper into the pillow that smelled like Christian— His side of the bed was already cold.Of course it was. The man had a thing about patrolling the borders before the sun even thought abou
Chapter 38I woke up at dawn because apparently my body decided sleep was overrated.Christian was already awake beside me, his fingers tracing lazy patterns on my bare shoulder while he watched the sunrise through the windows.“Can't sleep?” I mumbled.“Too excited.” He pressed a kiss to my temple
Chapter 37I woke up tangled in Christian like we'd been fused together overnight. My legs were wrapped around his. My head rested on his chest, right over his heart. His arms were locked around me like even in sleep, he was afraid I'd disappear. The steady thump of his heartbeat under my ear was t
