Chapter 8 – Dancing for the Devil

The club throbbed with its late-night energy—red lights, pounding bass, guys with too much cash and too little heart. But for Sera, time was slowing to a crawl.

Since that night—since Valerio had touched her with more gentleness than she thought him capable of—something had shifted.

He wasn't returned yet, but she could *feel* him in every darkness.

The girls noticed.

“You’ve got a secret admirer,” one teased as they slipped past her in the hallway. “Big spender, too.”

Sera ignored the comment. But the weight of Valerio’s presence was impossible to shake.

Another gift had arrived that morning. A simple thing—a black velvet ribbon tucked into a box. No note. Just the ribbon. A whisper of a collar.

She’d left it at home.

Still, it burned in her mind.

*Dancing for the devil*, the phrase repeated.

She hadn't even seen the club owner until his deep voice shook her out of the haze.

"Valez wants to see you," Gregor said to her.

Sera blinked. "Now?"

He nodded toward the back of the bar, where

The club pulsed with the strobe of red lights and thick bass, bodies crowded against one another in smoke and lust. But Sera was not on stage tonight—not before the catcalls of the crowd, not before the glare that reduced every dancer to a product.No. Tonight the rules had changed.Tonight, she was dancing for *one* man, alone. And she hadn't agreed to it."Sera," Carmen spat across the bar, dark eyes bulging. "He bought out the whole goddamn VIP room. Said he'd double what you make in a week.""I didn't consent," Sera growled, arms clamped around her chest."You actually think that's going to count? You think anyone ever says no to Valerio Moretti?"Sera's back bristled at the mention of his name.*The devil in designer black. The man who whispered ugliness without so much as a touch.*He had darkness for eyes and lips like sins soaked in promises. And he *wanted her*. Not the Ice Queen. Not the fantasy.*Her.*And that was what scared her.But curiosity had burned hotter than fear

The club was quiet tonight. The music was muted, a soft beat in the shadows, a throb like the beat of an unseen heart below the surface of the building.Sera was in front of the mirror in the dancer's lounge, standing there staring at her reflection and not seeing it.Her fingertips caressed the outline of her collarbone. She'd never stopped thinking of last night. Of the way he'd *gazed* at her.About how she'd danced in clothes and somehow still made him hard. She hated the way it clung to her like a vice to sin—this said unspoken hunger but felt just as real. And she hated more the way that when she came out to the main floor, *he was already there waiting*.Valerio.The devil with eyes that promised everything she feared to want.He was in the same VIP room—again bought just for her. He wasn't appearing impatient. Didn't demand. Rather, he was reclining in his chair, arms on the armrests, that lazy, wicked smile playing at the edge of his mouth. When she entered the room, he didn'

Sera couldn't sleep that night. She paced the floorboards of her little apartment, aching feet still trembling from lingering adrenaline spawned from the conflict with Valerio. Each time she blinked, she could nearly feel the ghost of his phantasm on her skin. Hear the sinister oaths he made in shadows. No touch, no kiss… but he had left her body taut and throbbing, as though he *had* touched her.It was wrong. *He* was wrong. And she was wrong for craving it.She was lucky to get a few fitful hours' sleep before pulling herself back to the club the following evening, praying that somehow, in some way, Valerio had lost interest and moved on.But of course he hadn't.Sera slipped out the side entrance, dodging between the makeup women and the bouncers, making for the dressing rooms—only to be intercepted by Franco, the club owner. He was standing stiffly next to her locker, arms folded over his wide chest, a thin layer of sweat slicking his forehead despite the chilly air. "Sera,"

The next morning, Sera woke to the rude boom of someone knocking on her door. She rolled over, struggling up from the worn mattress. Her whole body ached, each muscle taut with tension, with restless tossing and turning. Her broken nightstand's clock beeped out a bitter 7:02 AM.Way, way too early for anything to be good.Sera jerked the door open, ready to bark at whoever it was—And froze instantly. Two men in black suits stood in the hall. Both linebacker-huge, both wearing shades even in the grimy, dim lighting of her crummy apartment complex.Behind them was a third man. Younger, smoother. No shades. But his stance radiated *deadly* too.He gave her a crooked grin that didn't reach his hard brown eyes."Sera Vale?" he asked, voice as smooth as a car salesperson but with the unmistakable trace of a man who could snap a neck without wincing. She gulped hard."Who are you?" she croaked, keeping the door shut tighter. The younger guy stuck his hands innocently into his pockets. "N

Sera waited until after midnight. The penthouse was as silent as if she was the only one in it. The only sounds the distant hum of the city far below and the soft lapping of the curtains from the gentle air of the vent.Matteo had stood watch by the door before, but she'd seen through the peephole, waiting. Listening. At dinner, he'd disappeared—one way or another he'd assumed she was clever enough to know she couldn't get away. They hardly knew Sera Vale at all. With her heart racing, she jammed a few necessities into the little leather bag — ID, what little cash she had, her brother's hospital information. She wore her soft slippers into the house to mute her steps across the marble floor. All the shadows breathed. All the creaks of the wood made her nerves scream. The service elevator. She remembered Matteo having pointed it out in the first place, laughing. "Even rats have to have a way out, right?"It was hidden behind the big kitchen — probably where deliveries came and went.

Sera didn't say a word to him the next day.Not when Matteo delivered her breakfast — a lavish spread of fruit, pastries, coffee — on Valerio's orders. Not when she opened the front door that evening and heard the unmistakable thud of Valerio's heavy footsteps coming into the penthouse. Not even when he stood in the living room, eyes burning into her back where she was curled up on the giant velvet couch, lost in a book she wasn't even reading. All she had left to fight with was silence. She refused to look up. Refused to even glance at him.Valerio stood there for a moment. Then, silently, he vanished into the depths of the penthouse.Sera shook with her breath once he was gone. But her heart still pounded in her chest. She could sense every gasp he took when he was near, the way the air around him became dense. It was maddening. infuriating. She loathed him. She loathed the way he could make her body betray her. Sera thought she knew the shadows that lurked in Valerio Romano. She was wrong. It happened one evening, late. She had walked the perimeter of the penthouse, tense and restless, when she heard the noises of voices from the staircase — low, rough, insistent. Hairs on the back of her neck stood on end immediately.Sera knew she shouldn't be outside. Knew no good could ever come from listening in on the Devil. But her curiosity, her stubbornness, overpowered her.She crept towards the stairwell door, ear pressed against cold metal. She only caught fragments at first.".told you." Two days passed without Sera leaving her suite after witnessing the murder she saw Valerio perpetrate. She stayed huddled on the oversized velvet sofa, wrapped in a blanket, jolting at every knock, every creak of footsteps outside the hall. Her mind went round and round with it over and over — the calculating competence, the factual brutality. She couldn't *want* a person like that. She *couldn't*.And yet…She slept with him at night.Of silk and blood.Of pinning hands and bruising mouths, a voice speaking foul, awful promises on the skin. She woke gasping, dripping with sweat, legs clenched around an ache she was not about to name anything.*It's fear,* she lied to herself.*Nothing else.*She was lying though. And despised herself for it.---On the third day, gifts arrived. The first was a simple, elegant box set on the coffee table when she didn't notice.Inside, supported by black velvet, was a thin, delicate anklet of gold.Delicate. • Velvet Chains   Chapter 60 – Valerio & Sera (Part 2)

The kiss grew, slowly, as evening gives way to night. Sera melted into Valerio, her fists bunched in the collar of his shirt as if she thought he might disappear. But he didn't retreat. For once, there was no imperative in him, no command under his fingers—only raw, unbridled feeling. When they parted, air between them trembled."I don't want to lose you," she breathed, barely more than a whisper."You won't," he said, gently brushing his nose against hers. "Unless you run."A ghost of a smile danced on her lips. "And if I do?""I'll burn every corner of this city to get you back." His declaration was half-threat, half-promise—but all him.The tension that had simmered under their interactions for these weeks had become something fragile. Fragile, even. And that made it lethal. Because fragile things, when they broke, left the deepest cuts.Sera grasped and held his hand and pulled him wordlessly to the bed.

  • Velvet Chains   Chapter 60 – Valerio & Sera (Part 1)

The moon hung low in the horizon, and it gave the city an eerie light. Eros City, with its neon lights and endless hum, was a world unto itself—one that Valerio dominated with ruthless effectiveness. But tonight, the cold of control felt like a suffocation around him.Sera sat by the window, her eyes gazing out into the city, but her mind was not nearly so distant. Valerio's presence in the room was magnetic, tangible, even when he said nothing. The space between them pulsed with a force that was electric and dangerous. It was weeks since they'd shared any real intimacy. Oh, yes, there had been moments—hot, breathless moments—but the tension beneath it all had never been so thick. Neither of them spoke of the past. Neither of them spoke of the weight of the unspoken.Tonight, it felt heavier."Do you ever wonder," Sera's voice cut through the silence, soft but unmistakable, "if we're just running in circles?"Valerio

  • Velvet Chains   Chapter 59 - Valerio & Sera

There was suffocating quiet within the penthouse. Valerio moved through it with a ferocity that caused the air to feel too tight, too thick, as if the shadows themselves were bearing down on him. He did not walk; he stalked, stalked out whatever was hiding within the walls of his kingdom. His steps were deliberate, every stride precise as he approached the stairs leading to the upper floors. His men were already in place, each of them conversing with swift gestures and wordless nods. The danger was at hand. The threat? It was closing fast. But for all his training, all his power, his thoughts kept going back to her—Sera. The kiss they'd shared before he left the room had been different from the others. It hadn't just been a moment of lust or tenderness. It had been a soft promise. A desperate, brief plea for her to see that, in his world, his heart was the most dangerous thing he could offer. And now, he was too far from her.Va

  • Velvet Chains   Chapter 58 - Valerio & Sera

The rest of the world outside Valerio's penthouse sparkled at twilight, Eros City casting a mauve sheen over the skyline like purple marks on the neck of a wine-stained throat. Inside, Sera sat on the edge of the velvet chaise lounge, legs tucked under her, robe cinched tightly around her waist, but heart wide open.Valerio stood on the opposite side of the room, half-facing away from her, phone stuffed into his ear. His voice was low, biting, and lethal."If he inhales anywhere close to her again, I want his lungs in my floor. Got it?"Sera trembled, not with fear—not anymore—but because of the menace in his tone. The way he ordered when it came to her. Claimingly. Roughly. Guardedly. He hung up and faced her, his features calm but still lined."Everything's alright," he told her."Are you certain?" she demanded, eyes tightening slightly."You're safe. That's the only thing that matters."He strode towards her, h

  • Velvet Chains   Chapter 57 - Valerio Sera

The silence following their confrontation lingered over the suite like smoke. Valerio had not returned since the early morning, and Sera perched on the edge of the bed, her knees tucked up to her chest, the robe slipping down her shoulder slightly. The events of the day before rumbled through her mind like a clap of thunder: the betrayal, the fear, the lust, and the truth she had not been willing to embrace. Her phone buzzed.A message from Matteo, the bodyguard Valerio had sent. **Stay indoors. Don't open the door to anyone. He's on it.**Her heart sank. That meant the threat hadn't passed. She didn't want to think about how many corpses already littered the ground. The darkness fell softly, veiling the city in a velvet shroud. The air in the suite was stifling. She needed some air. Maybe just for a minute on the balcony.Sera stepped out barefoot, robe still clung to one shoulder, hair a tangled halo around her head. The wind tugged at it and made it whirl around her cheeks. From t

  • Velvet Chains   Chapter 56 – The Calm Before the Storm

The morning after had never felt this way.Golden light seeped through the delicate drapes, falling in stripes across Sera's bare shoulder. Her arms and legs weighed heavy, her muscles sore in the best of ways. But it was not the ache between her thighs that made her heart pound faster. It was the warmth that was wrapped around her.Valerio.Unshaven and unshipped. Unmoving, still holding her.His arm was slung over her waist, his breathing calm against the back of her neck. For a man who ruled an empire of shadows, he slept like a man who had not known fear in years.Sera rolled over slowly, not wishing to wake him.She observed him in the soft morning light. The black lashes against his cheeks. The small furrow between his brows even in repose, as if he was still burdened by the world. But there was peace—a softness that no one else ever saw.She felt as though she had been entrusted with a secret he didn't know how to share aloud. And maybe she had.Sera gritted her teeth, a chill

  • Velvet Chains   Chapter 55 – The Price of Trust

There was thick silence between them—humid with unvoiced truths, burdened by lust that each could not extricate from the wreckage of emotion below. Sera stood at the window, her arms locked over her chest as the lights of the city danced off the glass, rocking like specters.Valerio stood in the doorway, arms folded, his black shirt half-unbuttoned from earlier. The tie she'd used to bind his hands last night was coiled on the bed like a memory they couldn't escape."You don't get to vanish on me again," he growled, voice low. A command laced with concern.Sera turned, slowly. Her expression was blank, but her eyes—hazel and too big for one in a world like his—burned with that stubborn fire he both desired and feared."You don't own me, Valerio. No matter how many suites you move me to or how many guards you station.""I don't want to own you." He took a step closer, each step deliberate, predatory. "I want you to *choose* to stay. I want you to *need* me.""You don't get to ask that

  • Velvet Chains   Chapter 54 - Part 2

Sera remained still, her back to him, her eyes far away as she gazed out the window, her skin clammy, her breathing shallow. The silence between them expanded, as dense as the secrets they both bore. It was too much to bear.Valerio stepped forward, his heart pounding in his chest, all of his instincts urging him to take hold of her. But she was vanishing, vanishing from him in a way he couldn't stop, even after all the times he had warned himself he would never let her go.He stepped forward, his own shadow falling across her. "Sera," he breathed, the words raw, as if torn from his chest. "Look at me."Slowly, uncertainly, she turned her head, her hazel eyes clashing with his. There was pain in them, but something else, too. Something so raw, it could break him. He moved to take her hand, but she pulled it back, as if the gentle touch of fingers could break everything."I don't know how to trust you anymore, Valerio," she breathed. "You continue to draw me into your world, and I don'

  • Velvet Chains   Chapter 54 - Part 1

Valerio came bursting into the dark room, his icy blue eyes probing the room for what was out of place. An unseen deceit thickened the atmosphere, making itself felt with all the tang of treachery. Walls which had previously served as the sign of his own mastery and mastery now seemed claustrophobically closing in on him, their stoniness flaunting its unfriendliness. There was a mole in his organization, feeding information to his enemies, and it had sent a shiver through the roots of everything he had built. He clenched his teeth, the ache of the betrayal breaking in. The trust he had placed in his men, the loyalty he had earned over years—everything poised on a knife-edge. He had trusted one of his inner circle, one of his men who had fought beside him for years. And now that trust was shattered, and there was only question, and worse—doubt. But the worst part? The worst part was Sera. His mind was still on her—the woman who had changed everything around him. The woman who had dared
