Mag-log inCHAPTER 4
~~ETHAN WILDER~~ After giving it ânother careful, thorough thought, I finally arrive here. Realistically, it’s my first time at the Vance cooperation. I’d only hear about it in TVs, radios, magazines. It was big but couldn’t compare to the Phoenix empire. I felt every eye burning into me as I walked into the cooperation. I headed straight for the open office on the third floor, where my ex wife and her man were currently making a scene. "Ethan?" She called out to me, her eyes widening like she’d just seen a ghost. Shortly after, the shock was replaced by a panicked rage. She stepped toward me before I could even draw a breath to speak. “I told you to stay away!" she hissed, her face contorting. "You’re pathetic, Ethan! Did you think you could just walk in here and beg for a second chance? Did you think I’d feel sorry for you because you have nothing?" Beside her, Julian let out a loud, mocking laughter that echoed in the now quiet office. He looked me up and down like I was something he’d stepped in on the sidewalk. "Let him talk, Sarah," Julian sneered. "I want to hear the 'common convict' plead for a job. Maybe we need someone to scrub the toilets in the basement? I can offer you minimum wage, Wilder. Out of the kindness of my heart." I kept my gaze fixed on Sarah for a long, painful minute. Looking at her now, the woman I had once sacrificed my life for, I felt nothing but a huge sense of dislike. "I'm not here for you, Sarah," I said, my voice steady. "And I'm certainly not here to beg." "Then why are you here?" she spat, her disdain practically radiating off her. "To make a scene? To embarrass me?" I ignored her, shifting my focus to Julian. I watched the smug smile slide off his face as I met his eyes with a level of intensity he clearly wasn't prepared for. "I’m here to discuss the Vance Corporation," I told him. "Or more specifically, your attempts to dismantle it through the harassment of Alina." Sarah let out a shrill, disbelief-filled laugh. "Alina? You’re here for that little nobody? I should have known. Convicts really do stick together, don't they? Her father is a criminal, just like you. It’s poetic, really. You’ve found your own kind." "Her father is a man who understands loyalty," I replied coldly. "Something you wouldn't recognize if it hit you in the face, Sarah." Around us, the office went quiet. I heard the sharp intake of breath from the workers nearby. Some had even pulled out their phones to record. Sarah caught sight of them and snapped a cuss word under her breath. “You are embarrassing me, you psycho!” she whispered through gritted teeth. Julian took a step forward, closing the distance between us. "Listen to me, Wilder. You’re overstepping. This is Vance Corporation business. You’re a trespasser with a record. One phone call and you’re back in a cell for violating parole or disturbing the peace. Get out before I have security drag you out by your heels." “Then have them do that now, Julian,” I pressed, not moving an inch. He looked around frantically, the cracks in his composure starting to show. “I’ll advise you to go out quietly, on your own. You are already attracting too much attention.” Just then, the secretary, Jasmine, raised her voice to address the room. "We are having an important visitor soon. I’ll implore all of you to be on your best behavior. Although he's running late, I'm certain he will be here soon." She scanned the office, making sure every desk was perfect. “Jasmine, please get security,” Sarah called out, her voice loud enough to carry. “There is someone here the important guest wouldn’t like to meet.” Jasmine nodded without looking my way. “I’ll send them over this instant.” Even the secretary didn't recognize me. “Enough of the foul play,” Julian mouthed to me, a creepy, triumphant smile curling his lips. "I'm here," I said, pitching my voice so only they could hear "because I heard the Vance Corporation was attempting an illegal hostile takeover of a subsidiary. And as of five minutes ago, I own the debt that controls this entire building." Sarah let out a shrill laugh that bordered on manic. "You? You’re a rapist with a criminal record! You own nothing!" I shook my head sadly. “How about you stop throwing this tantrum right here, right now? It’s so embarrassing, Sarah.” I raised my hands to adjust the collar of my shirt. It was a small movement, but it was enough. I saw Julian’s eyes snag on the Phoenix Ring. He froze. As a high-level executive, he knew exactly what that ancient, heavy gold meant. "Where did you get that?" Julian asked, his voice suddenly thin and high pitched. I could see him mentally trying to justify it, deciding I must have stolen it. I took a quick glimpse at the ring, then looked back at him. "You seem to recognize this." "That... that's a fake!" Sarah shrieked, glaring at my hand. "It has to be, or you stole it! Barely a month since you got out of prison, and you’ve managed to commit another crime, Ethan. You are cursed." "Is it?" I asked softly. I reached into my inner jacket pocket and pulled out my phone. "Check your phone, Julian." At that exact moment, Julian’s device erupted notifications alerts. I watched the color drain from his face as he scrolled through emergency alerts. "This... this is impossible," he whispered, his hands beginning to shake. "The Phoenix Group? They just bought out our primary creditors. They’re demanding an immediate audit." "Julian? What the hell is going on?" Sarah butted in, her voice rising in pitch. "It’s just Ethan. He’s a loser. He has nothing!" "Shut up, Sarah!" Julian snapped, not sparing her a glance. I took a step forward, closing the final bit of space between us. The security guards had arrived, but instead of grabbing me, they stepped aside, bowing their heads as I passed. They knew who I was now. I looked Sarah dead in the eye, letting a small, cold smile play on my face. "I told you, Sarah. From where I’m standing, you both look very, very small. Now, shall we head to the boardroom for the pending meeting? Alina Johnson will no longer be stripped of either her shares or her position in this corporation."~~LUCAS WILDER~~The fight started over something stupid. At least, that’s what I told myself later. It was Friday evening. The whole house smelled like mum’s favorite roast chicken with fries. Elara and I were supposed to be helping set the table, but things had felt off between us all day. Ever since the debate hall and Kai’s invitation, she had been distant. Short replies to my texts. Avoiding my eyes in the cafeteria. I finally caught her alone in the hallway near the dining room while Mom and Dad were still busy in the kitchen.“You’re actually thinking about going to Kai’s party, aren’t you?” I asked, keeping my voice low.Elara crossed her arms. That stubborn look I knew so well settled on her face. “Maybe. Why? It’s not like I have anything better to do this weekend.”Her words hit me hard. I stepped closer. “Because we said we’d be careful. Because every time you smile at him, it feels like you’re rubbing it in my face that I can’t do the same thing.”She gave a sharp little
~~Lucas Wilder~~The thing about hiding something huge is that the world keeps throwing little reminders at you, daring you to slip up.It was Thursday afternoon, and the debate hall was packed for the inter-house competition. I was supposed to be focused on my notes, but my eyes kept drifting to the front row where Elara sat. She had her legs crossed, scribbling something in her notebook, looking unfairly good in the school uniform. Our eyes met for half a second. She gave me that tiny, secret smile that made my chest do stupid things. Then Kai Lennox walked in.Tall, loud, and always dressed like he was about to shoot a music video instead of attend classes. Captain of the basketball team, rich parents, and a smile that made half the girls in school giggle. He dropped into the seat right next to Elara like he belonged there.“Johnson-Wilder,” he said, loud enough for me to hear from the back. “You look like you’re ready to destroy someone today. Save some energy for me after this, y
~~LICAS WILDER~~I hated how much I noticed her.Elara Johnson-Wilder walked through the world like she was daring it to try her. Head high, shoulders back, that sharp tongue ready to cut anyone who looked at her wrong. Especially me. We’d been at each other’s throats since we were kids, but lately.. it felt different. Dangerous.Tonight was one of those nights where the house felt too small.. Mom and Dad had gone to bed. Elara had disappeared into the garden after dinner like she always did when her head was loud. I told myself I was just checking on her. That was all.I found her sitting on the old stone bench under the oak tree, knees pulled to her chest, fairy lights glowing soft above her. She looked small there. Not the fierce girl who argued with me in the hallways every day. Just… Elara.I walked over without thinking. My heart was already hammering like I’d run sprints.“You’re going to freeze out here,” I said, stopping a few feet away. She didn’t look up. “Then go back
SIXTEEN YEARS LATER~~ELARA JOHNSON~~Elara Johnson hated Lucas Wilder more than she hated Monday mornings. That was the thought running through her head as she slammed her locker shut on a random Tuesday afternoon. The hallway at New York International Academy was loud with the usual after school chaos; kids shouting about football practice, someone blasting music from a phone speaker, the smell of cheap cafeteria fries hanging in the air. She adjusted the strap of her backpack and tried to ignore the way her heart was already racing.Because there he was.Lucas leaned against the wall opposite her locker like he owned the place. Tall, messy dark hair that always looked like he’d just rolled out of bed, and that stupid half smirk he wore whenever he saw her coming. He was in the same year as her. same grade, same hallway, same everything, even though she was five months older. Their mother had told them she hadn’t known she was pregnant with Lucas until she was four months gone.
~~ALINA WILDER~~Weeks had passed since Sarah showed up at our gate with that tiny bundle in her arms. Life had slowly started to feel… normal. Or at least, our version of it.I was in the nursery, humming softly as I rocked Elara to sleep. She was such a quiet baby, barely fussing even when she was hungry. Her little fingers curled around my thumb as I fed her, and every time she looked up at me with those wide, trusting eyes, my heart squeezed. I changed her, bathed her, sang the silly lullabies my father used to sing to me. Ethan had gone to the office for the first time in days ; something about finalizing the dissolution of the last Phoenix holdings. He hated leaving us, but I’d practically pushed him out the door.“Mommy’s got you,” I whispered to Elara as I laid her down in the crib. The word slipped out so naturally now. We hadn’t officially adopted her yet, but in every way that mattered, she was ours. Sarah’s promise to come back for her felt further away with each passing
~~ETHAN WILDER~~The library beneath the old Wilder estate had been sealed for decades. Dust floated in the narrow beams of our flashlights as we descended the hidden stairs behind the fireplace. Alina walked beside me, her hand in mine, the new engagement ring catching faint light every few steps. Behind us, Damian and my father followed slowly, with Freckles guarding the entrance above. No one spoke much. After months of chaos, this final step felt heavier than any gunshot or chase. We reached the chamber at the bottom. The Ouroboros box sat on a stone pedestal in the center dark wood and tarnished silver, the serpent devouring its own tail wrapped around two phoenixes. One rising, one falling. My ring and the second key rested in my palm.Alina’s fingers tightened around mine. “This is it,” she whispered. “Everything your father warned about. The ledger that could burn the whole system down.”I nodded. The scar on her wrist caught the light, the living second key. “We don’t open
~ALINA JOHNSON~The door opened with a slow creaking sound. I walked in slowly, heels dangling from my fingers. Everything was as it was after the police arrived. My furniture upturned and messy, broken glass and ceramics. I stared at my large TV. It cost a lot yet it was still here. What could th
~ALINA JOHNSON~ The ride back to the office was longer that's usual l. Maybe it was because the car was suffocating. All she wanted at the moment was to be alone. Phoenix Empire's building loomed into view and as soon as the car came to a stop, I didn't wait for Burly to open the door for me as u
~ALINA JOHNSON~Another eye-rolling groan left my lips for the umpteenth time in a span of 1 hour. My brain was oddly creative at the moment, pairing a shirtless Ethan with the smirk he gave me through the glass wall as if they had happened at the same time. Every now and then, my attention and tho
Ethan's POV My heavy eyes stared upwards at the ceiling as I'd not slept a wink throughout the night. The scene from earlier, her tear stained cheeks, the words I'd said to her in a fit of my frustration and the anger shimmering in her eyes as the doors closed between us. God! Had I been too har
