MasukAria POV
I flinched every time my uncle’s stifled cries rang out as Alexei and Viktor broke each of his fingers.
My eyes weren’t on my uncle, though, but instead on my husband’s face. His expression was unreadable as he watched my uncle like he was conducting some sort of experiment.
Soon, they began cutting his clothes off from his body then they began slicing his skin over and over in the process.
I jerked to my feet because there was no I would watch this and move importantly I don't want to see him naked and his screems were now getting to me. Viktor looked over to me and stopped his brother from removing my uncle’s underpants.
He walked toward me. “Do you want to hear what he has to say before you go?”
I wasn’t sure what I wanted at this point but I gave a very small nod.
He went back and pulled the cloth out of my uncle’s mouth. “I’m sorry,” he shouted. “Please forgive me.” His eyes begged me.
Viktor looked at back at me, whatever I say now would determine his fate. “Do you forgive him?” He asked me.
Could I forgive him? Can you forgive having your childhood destroyed? Having your innocence ripped from you? Losing that childlike trust in your family in the worst way possible? “No,” I said.
Viktor stuffed the clothes back into Yuri mouth and I had leave the room when he brought the knife down onto my uncle’s chest.
I closed the door and took a shuddering breath then stiffened when I noticed Ivan heading my way and carrying transfusion bags.
I moved to the side so he could enter, but he returned a moment later with empty arms. “I’m going to take you to Alexei room and your husband will join you later.”
I didn’t say anything, just watched the tall broad chest man.
We walked in silence, and when I stepped into Alexei room, he disappeared and I was alone. I walked over to the bed then crept under the blankets, staring into the darkness.
The bed brought back memories of the past, even if it wasn’t the same bed where it had happened.
Slipping out of the bed, I curled up in one of the armchairs, not bothering with a blanket.
Much later, the door creaked open and as the light spilled in from the corridor, I could see Viktor dressed in his wedding suit then he closed the door, bathing us in darkness.
He stopped halfway to the bed. “You can sleep in the bed. Alexei won't be coming here tonight, so It’s ours.”
I swallowed. “I haven’t slept in a bed in years.”
“Why?” he asked.
“Because that’s where it happened,” I choked.
“He begged for death in the end if it’s any consolation.”
I sucked in my breath. Was it? It shouldn’t have been, but part of me felt consoled. “Thank you,” I whispered.
“You have to set yourself free from the hold he has on you and only you can do that.”
I stood then slowly walked toward the bed. In the dim light I could only make out Viktor tall form, but I had a feeling he was watching me. I lay down and covered myself with the blanket.
He shadow shifted and I could hear clothes rustling.
He was getting out of his wedding suit. Would he try again? I was his wife after all, I shouldn't panic because he hasn't hurt me ever since we met but I couldn't help it
“You should sleep,” he said in that calm rough voice as he slipped under the covers.
He didn’t come close enough so we would touch. “I can’t.”
“The nightmares won’t stop because he’s dead,” he said, and I knew he was right, but it was unsettling that he knew.
They’d called him a genius, as twisted and dangerous as he was intelligent and I realized he was all that and more.
I remember how he twisted that knife in Uncle Yuri leg and how he kept punching him, that was something he's been doing for a long time.
"He begged for death in the end." He suddenly said when I was silence.
“He won’t ever hurt you again, and nobody else will either,” he said as if him speaking the words as if he wants me to screw it in my brain.
“What about you?” Silence. “Will you hurt me?”
He shifted and the bed moved under his weight and I sucked in a breath before I could stop myself and even in the dark, I could see him turn to face me. “I won’t hurt you either.”
“But you will abuse me mentally?” I asked. “No.” He paused. “But I don’t feel.”
“Feel what?”
"Emotions for lack of words."
I tried to understand what he meant. “You don’t feel emotions?”
“Haven’t since I was a child.” He paused. “Not like people usually do, It’s just difficult to explain.”
A sociopath, that was what people like him were called.
“I recognize them and I can simulate them in a satisfying manner if I want, but I don’t feel them.”
I wasn’t sure what to say maybe his admittance should have scared me. “So what does that mean for us?”
“That means that I will never act on anger or fear or sadness, but …”
“But never on love or affection either,” I finished and I wondered why he had slaughtered my uncle if it wasn’t for anger.
Was it habit? Because that was how things were handled in their group? Even here any members of the crew would have killed the man who’d dishonored his bride. “Yeah.”
I didn’t need love as long as I knew I was safe from him. Besides, I had gone without real affection for years now so I could live through more. “What about desire?”
“I do and to be sincere with you I desire your body.”
"But I won’t act on it.”
“You won’t?"
"if that’s what you prefer, I will use other women for my pleasure.?”
God, I love the way this conversation was going. “Yes,” I said, relieved that he’d suggested it. Now I could sleep because what I was scared of is now resolved.
Alexei POVTalia tests the water in the bathtub with her fingers, her face heavy with exhaustion as Ethan wiggles around in her grasp. She can barely hold him at this point, but I know she’s trying to keep a sense of normalcy for him.“I had a bath already,” Ethan protests, his bottom lip quivering. “I want to watch TV.”“You did have a bath this morning.” Talia glances at his clothes and cringes at the blood that’s been transferred from her. “But you need another one.”A slamming door down the hall in the room causing Talia to flinch and Ethan cranes his neck to look up at her, his tiny hand coming up to her face. “What’s wrong, Mommy?”She chokes back a sob, and I gather Ethan up into my arms, pulling Talia up beside me as I opened the door and received the stuff I told Aria to buy from Sergei. “Mommy is very tired. She’s going to go rest while I get you cleaned up. Okay, buddy?”Ethan still doesn’t seem sold on the idea, and Talia already has a protest on her lips but I need her to
Viktor POV The push and pull relationship between Alexei and Talia was reaching unsettling dimensions. In the last few days he’d spent more and more time with the girl and I wasn’t the only one who noticed.Aria tried to extract information from me every chance she got, thinking I knew what my brother had in mind, but for once Alexei kept his motives carefully hidden after finding out about Talia mother. I think Talia wants to move back to Houston after the attack because she's scared but Alexei isn't having it.I stepped into the kitchen, following the sound of clanking and humming, just as Aria put a baking tray into the oven. The kitchen smelled of lime and coriander, and something spicier. The sight of her ass in tight shorts was even more enticing.Walking up to her, I caught sight of what looked like tacos. I wrapped my arms around her from behind, kissing her neck. “That looks good. What is it?”“Chicken stew, I hope they aren’t too spicy.”I gripped her hips, turned her aroun
Aria POV On Alexei request early thenext day I went clothes shopping for Talia and Ethan. Viktor was busy visiting the government office in town to discuss something about some files or drive and Alexei hated shopping, which left Sergei with the task of playing babysitter.Sergei was munching on one of the muffins when he swung himself behind the wheel of his Ferrari. “If you’re bored, I wouldn’t mind if you bake again.”I smiled, happy that they all enjoyed my cooking when in the past I’d barely had the chance to try my hand at it. “What’s your favorite?”“Red velvet.”“Then I’ll make those next.”Sergei tore his eyes away from the traffic to give me a curious look but didn’t say anything.“You have to turn right there.”“I know new York by heart, don’t worry.”“Even boutiques?”“I like nice clothes.”I tilted my head in agreement. Sergei was always impeccably dressed and styled. He said, “Your new style works better for you, by the way.”I flushed, glancing down at myself. I’d chos
Alexei POV Viktor left after Sergei called him, disappearing without another word for almost two hours, giving me enough time to focus on the task at hand.Removing the bullet had been difficult, but not impossible. By the time Viktor returned, the bleeding had finally stopped, the wound was stitched, and Ivan had a decent chance of surviving. He walked into the room looking as unreadable as ever, a thick manila folder tucked beneath his arm and without saying a word, he crossed the office and slid it across the desk toward me."I found everything," he said simply.I frowned, pulling the folder closer before flipping it open. The first few pages were exactly what I expected, routine background reports, a copy of the birth certificate, medical records, vaccination history, school enrollment forms. The kind of information Lucas could have obtained in less than an hour with his hacking skills nothing about it looked unusual but then my eyes landed on a single line. The name and every ot
Alexei POV “Alexei.” Sergei opens the door to greet us, gesturing us inside with a solemn expression. This isn’t exactly the reunion either of us were expecting, but it is what it is.“Allow me to help.” He takes some of the burden off my shoulders as he slips his arm around Ivan right side, helping him through the entrance. “Viktor is upstairs.”I glance back at Talia, who is still in a daze but trying to hold it together for Ethan as she cradles him against her chest. More than anything, I want to take them both into my arms and make them forget everything that happened today but any comfort I might be able to provide will have to wait. The priority right now is ensuring their safety, and there isn’t much time.Aria enters the room, with Ivan wife, Aurora, not far behind, and they quickly take it upon themselves to assist in any way they can.“You’ve been through quite the ordeal, I’m told,” Aria says. “Let me show you to the bathroom where you can clean up, and then I’ll fix you s
Talia POV Blood splatters across my face, and I scream, turning my head away as I drop to my hands and knees again.I smell vomit, bullets, and blood, that sweet scent of marshmallow pancakes was long gone now.Another shot is fired, and I fall flat, my hand sliding in something wet and slippery.I scream, and when my scream ends and the sound of bullets is an echo, I roll onto my back, my head heavy, vision fading as I realize something. The thing that terrifies me more than anything else. Ethan has stopped screaming. The thought of why that could be twists my stomach, and I open my mouth to scream, but the sound that comes isn’t human. It’s ugly and hoarse and like that of a wounded animal. A dying one. “Talia?”I blink, seeing movement above me. Someone’s hands are on me, turning me. Instinct takes hold, and I fight. I fight him, but he’s too strong. He takes hold of my wrists and lays my arms at my sides. He mutters a curse. Another shadow passes over me and I’m lifted off the gr
Aria POVI immediately looked away from him and fighting the weak tears at the corner of my eye.I saw him remove his boxers, and then he climbed on the bed naked. I trembled because couldn’t stop myself no matter how had I tried. His hand touched my waist then slid up slowly, the touch was light b
Aria POV“Who is it I am going to marry?” I forced the words out, but they sounded strangled. That was the first question I asked my uncle when he came into my room and informed me I was getting married. I was an orphan so finding a notable member of the Crown Syndicate is almost impossible.“Vikto
Viktor POV Yuri eyes shifted between my brother and me, his breathing picking up and fear started to fill his veins and I knew the signs were obvious but this was only the beginning of his sorrow.I leaned down, my mouth curling. “You will admit to it your transgressions soon and you will apologiz
Viktor POVWhen Alexei first told me about a marriage with the Crown Syndicate, I thought he was pulling my legs as usual but when Nikolai sent me the picture I was surprised, marriage was the last thing on my mind right now and an orphan, I didn't know what to say about that. I should have known s
