Chapter 2

作者: River Snapshot
I touched my face and looked up at Mom in shock.

She seethed. "Weren't you determined to fly off and chase your dreams? Weren't you so set on becoming a war correspondent? Why did you bother coming back?"

I took a deep breath. "Mom, Gina married Beckett, and they even had a child. Did you know about that?"

Mom's expression remained indifferent. "Of course I knew. Both of our families hosted the wedding together."

"What did you just say?" My eyes widened in disbelief. "I'm Gina's husband. I'm your son. How could you…"

"You've got some nerve saying that!" Mom shot back.

Hearing the commotion, Dad, Dorian Mendel, stormed out with a livid expression on his face.

He fumed, "We told you not to go overseas, but you insisted! You could've had a comfortable life here, but you just had to throw your life away in a war zone. When you disappeared two years ago, we all thought you were dead. Your mother cried every single day.

"And you? You were alive but never made a single phone call back home. Then, the first thing you did after coming back was to march in here accusing us."

I had just opened my mouth to explain when the doorbell rang.

Gina and Beckett walked in with Jamie.

Beckett called out affectionately, "Mom, Dad."

Mom greeted him with a smile. "Beckett, you're here! Come on in."

She immediately scooped Jamie into her arms. "Are you hungry? Grandma's going to make you something delicious…"

Grandma?

Watching the scene before me, my heart felt as though it were being sliced apart.

When Beckett saw me, he gave me an awkward smile. "Hey, Joseph. You're here too?"

"Don't talk to me. You're not my friend. You stole my wife and my family. You must be feeling pretty proud of yourself," I retorted.

Mom turned around and glared at me, her eyes red with anger. "Joseph, stop talking nonsense! Are you determined to tear this family apart? We watched Beckett grow up. He's far more sensible than you and much more considerate.

"He's the one who's been taking care of your father and me all these years. Unlike you, you ungrateful brat. You disappeared for two years and never even came home!"

I looked at Gina, but she guiltily looked away.

Back when I was about to accept the overseas assignment, both of our families had strongly opposed it. Gina had been the only one who supported me.

On the day I left, we had embraced at the airport for a long time.

She kissed my cheek and said, "Joseph, go do what you want to do. I'll always stand behind you."

But now, faced with my parents' accusations against me, she didn't say a single word.

In the end, it was Beckett who stepped in to smooth things over. "Mom, don't be upset. Joseph finally made it back. Let's all have dinner together."

At the dinner table, the five of them sat together like one family. I was squeezed into a corner. No one even bothered to set out a plate and cutlery for me.

Mom kept piling food onto Beckett's plate, worried he wouldn't have enough to eat. Dad spent the whole time making Jamie laugh and even slipped a thick envelope filled with cash into his little hands.

They chatted about family matters, company projects, and everything Jamie would need before starting kindergarten.

Meanwhile, I sat there like I was invisible. The food in my mouth suddenly became tasteless—it was like chewing wax.

I set down my fork and stood up. "I'm full."

Their attention remained fixed on Jamie. No one responded.

As I walked out of Mendel Manor, the night wind was so cold that chill seeped into my bones.

Just then, I suddenly thought of my old job.

I immediately rushed back home and dug out my old laptop. It still contained all the interview footage I'd filmed in the war zone over the years, along with the rest of my reporting materials.

I logged into my work account, intending to upload the videos. Only then did I discover that my account had already been deactivated.

Early the next morning, I went to the TV station.

The young woman at the front desk stopped me. "You can't come in without an employee badge."

I said, "My name is Joseph Mendel. I was the station's correspondent assigned to Denbrov. I'm here to apply to return to my position."

She searched the system on her computer. Then, she froze in surprise.

"Joseph Mendel, you say… That name has already been removed from our records. Someone else has already filled that position."

"Someone else? Who?"

The receptionist smiled and replied, "Mr. Beckett Jobling. He's now the youngest senior correspondent at our station. He even won an international journalism award not long ago."

Gina hesitated for a moment before finally letting go of my sleeve."Joseph, if I divorce Beckett, will you forgive me?" she asked quietly.I didn't answer. I simply turned around and walked away.Even now, she still didn't understand. Whether she divorced Beckett or not, I would never go back. Not long after Gina left, my parents arrived. They stood outside my apartment and rang the doorbell for ten minutes before I finally opened the door. The moment it opened, Mom threw herself into my arms and burst into tears. "Joseph, please come home with us. From now on, whatever you want to do, we won't stop you anymore…"Dad echoed her words, saying, "Son, we're really worried about you. You're all alone overseas. Your mother and I can't stop worrying."I stood there without moving. After Mom had cried herself out, I gently pushed her away."Come home with us. I'm begging you. You're our only son," she pleaded tearfully."When you released my medical records at that press conference

My reporter friend had already arranged everything for me.After getting settled, I reported to my new team. There were many familiar faces there. They were colleagues who had fought alongside me while we worked in Denbrov. My coworkers gave me a big hug and welcomed me to the team."Welcome home."The first thing I did after arriving wasn't planning a new project. Instead, I worked on gathering stronger evidence to prove my innocence. One of the cameramen handed me a flash drive. It contained behind-the-scenes footage from my time working in Denbrov. They had casually recorded those ordinary moments I had never paid attention to.They told me that if I ever needed them, they would always speak up for me.I accepted the flash drive and thanked them.A week later, the official account of the International News Network released its first statement, accompanied by the original behind-the-scenes footage from my reporting in Denbrov. In the video, I stood on the balcony of an aband

On the day I was discharged from the hospital, Gina arrived early to pick me up. After helping me pack my things, her phone rang.Beckett's voice came through from the other end, "Honey, today's Jamie's birthday. He's been crying for you. Can you come back and comfort him?"Gina glanced at me as I appeared to be sleeping and lowered her voice. "Let him play by himself for a while. I'll be there soon."She left. The moment the door closed behind her, I opened my eyes.I had actually been awake for a long time. I just didn't want to see her.I told the bodyguards that I wanted to go downstairs for some fresh air and asked them not to follow me. Then, I hailed a taxi and returned to my apartment. After packing everything, I booked the earliest available flight and headed straight for the airport. As I entered the boarding gate, my phone vibrated.I looked down and saw that Gina had sent me a message. She wrote, "Joseph, wait for me at the hospital. I'll be there to pick you up v

When I opened my eyes again, I smelled the familiar scent of disinfectant. I yanked the IV needle out of my hand and struggled to get out of bed. Clutching my head, I screamed. The next second, someone wrapped me tightly in their arms. "Joseph, I'm here. It's okay now. It's okay…"Gradually, my mind became clear. This wasn't the psychiatric hospital. It was an ordinary hospital.Gina gently patted my back, patiently trying to comfort me. No matter how much I struggled, she refused to let go.Little by little, I calmed down and looked around the room.Mom stood at the foot of the bed, her eyes swollen from crying."Joseph, I'm so sorry." Her voice was terribly hoarse. "I didn't know you had lost your memory. I didn't know you'd suffered so much…"Dad said with a pained expression, "We're sorry, Joseph. We'll find the best doctors to treat you. You'll get better."I turned my head away and faced the other direction, remaining silent for a long time.Gina immediately poured me a

The courtyard on the first floor was brightly lit. It was almost as bright as daylight.Gina and Beckett stood in the center, raising their glasses to give a toast. "Thank you all for coming to celebrate our wedding anniversary."She stood on her tiptoes and kissed Beckett on the cheek with heartfelt devotion. "Beckett, thank you for always being by my side. And thank you for giving me such a wonderful son."Tears glistened in Beckett's eyes as the crowd responded with thunderous applause. Gina raised her wine glass, the smile still on her face.Just as the glass reached halfway into the air, a loud crash rang out. A figure dressed in white fell from above. It happened without warning when everyone least expected it.The wine glass slipped from Gina's hand and shattered at her feet. The scene instantly descended into chaos. Some people shouted frantically. Some of them ran, while some others burst into tears.Gina stood frozen in place. Her eyes widened sharply, and both of her

Gina called me several times, but I didn't answer. My parents sent me messages telling me to delete the videos, but I ignored them.In less than an hour, the top ten trending topics were all about Beckett. However, it didn't take long for public opinion to shift.Spencer Group released a statement claiming that my mental condition was unstable and that none of my statements were credible. Mendel Group followed immediately afterward by holding a press conference. My parents personally appeared before the media and released medical records from the psychiatric hospital where I had been treated overseas. They took selected excerpts out of context, claiming I was mentally ill and had deliberately fabricated accusations against Beckett. At the press conference, Mom cried inconsolably. "Joseph broke our hearts! We searched for him for two years. He was alive all along, yet he never came home. Now that he's finally back, all he does is spread lies and stir up trouble. We never raised him
