LOGIN"You have a visitor ma'am."
That was the first thing I heard the moment I walked into the office that morning. "Who is it?" I asked. "Um he's what we call a VIP client." Chloe said in an exaggerated whisper. "Okay." I said and let her take Arya. I walked into my office and was met with the whiff of a very familiar cologne. I paused. No way. It couldn't be. He turned away from the floor to ceiling window and faced me. "Hello Olive," I stood there, frozen, nervous, entranced by the sight of him. Girl, snap out of it! I yelled in my head. My face held a composed smile as I said, "Mr Giovanni. What are you doing here?" He smirked, "Formal are we?" I said nothing to him as I walked over to my desk, watching as he in turn walked to the chair in front of me. "Miss Moretti, you look amazing." He complimented me. "I know." Came my clipped response. He chuckled. My heart lurched. I had not heard that deep dark chuckle in so long. "It's been a while." He said. "Yes it has. What are you doing here?" I asked, keeping my expression as plain as possible. He hummed and was silent for a bit before speaking again, "You ran off at the function the other day, why?" I sat down on my seat opposite him. "I didn't want to speak to you. Somehow you still found a way to get to me. How?" He smirked, "You know I always have my ways." "Of course you do." I rolled my eyes. "Is there a reason why you want to see me? As you can see," I gestured at my computer and the files on my desk. "I have work to do." "I'd like to see you in a less formal place." He said. "Why?" "I want us to talk." "Asides business that can apparently be discussed here, there's nothing for us to discuss." "Olive - " A knock came through just then, cutting him off. I looked away from him. "Come in!" I foolishly hollered. The door came open and Arya ran in. I glared strongly at my assistant who aided her entry. "Mommy!" I protectively picked her up, watching as Xander's eyes trailed over her. "Baby what are you doing her? You're supposed to be with auntie Carmella." I said softly. "Juicebox." She said innocently. If only she knew what her presence just caused. Stupid me, I carried her snack bag with me. If only I knew Xander was the one in here... I quickly picked up the bag and gave everything to Carmella and watched them leave. I'd deal with her later. Now I had to take care of Xander. "That's your daughter?" He asked. "Yes." I let out quickly. "You had a child, interesting." He hummed and nodded. "Yeah." I said, trying to fight how nervous I felt from showing. Just then he got on his feet and towered over me. "I guess I'll get going now. See you around." He said. I nodded and watched as he left. I felt my heartbeat increase. I hoped he did not see any form of semblance between Arya and him. I in fact prayed that she would be totally erased from his memory. ~~ "What? You can't hide her forever you know." I sighed sadly, "I know but I'm not ready for that." "You should have thought about that before moving back into the same city as your estranged husband." "You do not have to rub it in." I said with an angry huff. "Someone has to tell you the truth," Maya, my sister in-law, had a way of being blunt and straight to the point. Everyone needed someone like her in their life but now was not the time. I Facetimed her as soon as I settled in at home after the work day to tell her what happened. "Where's Arya?" She asked when she saw my countenance had changed. "She's asleep." I said. "Don't stay awake all night sulking about this." I nodded. She knew me too well. A little bit of anxiety could cause sleepless nights for me. My phone buzzed and I saw that I had an incoming call. "Malik is calling. I have to go now." "Alright, good night." She said and hung up. "Hey Malik," I said softly. "Hey, how was your day?" "It was good. How was yours?" "You forgot about my trip didn't you?" He questioned. I gasped, placing my palm over my mouth. "Oh my, I'm so sorry." "It's fine." "I just got so carried away by the happenings of the day, it completely skipped my mind." "It's alright Olive. How's my girl doing?" "She's great." I said, instinctively looking towards her room. "Must be tucked in," "You got that right." I chuckled. "Which means I have you all to myself," I chuckled, "What does that mean?" "That I get to talk to you without interruptions tonight." I yawned immediately, "I actually feel so sleepy. I had a long day." "Come on Olive, just a few more minutes won't hurt." "Okay." I said amid a yawn. We ended up talking for five more minutes before I faked another yawn so he would let me sleep. When the call ended, I immediately felt bad for always pushing him away even though he had been nothing but an angel since I first met him. I checked on my daughter as she laid fast asleep in her crib and headed into my room opposite hers ready to call it a night when flashes of Xander's unexpected visit came to my mind again. Seeing him up close for the first time in four years was not easy for me. It flooded my mind with all the memories I had tried to keep buried for the last few years. From the looks of it, there was no sleep for me tonight, I was going on a trip down memory lane. The rustic sounds of farm animals filled her ears and the stench of cow dung all over the field had her nose scrunching up in irritation. Why did he have to pick this place as a hideout? Her fancy cowgirl boots were not cut out for this place."This place stinks." She said, making her way further down the compound. "Bones!" She yelled for the guard manning the entrance."Where is she?""Upstairs with him."Briskly, she mounted the stairs, letting her footsteps echo on the wood boards of the sparsely furnished house."I didn't know you were here." Her lips curled into a wry smile as she spotted him carrying her over his shoulder."I just came in. What have you been feeding her?" He asked, sounding accusatory. "Food."She dropped the grocery bag to show that she had not been starving the girl."I already got her something to eat.""Okay daddy." She teased with mockery tainting her tone."Arya is just a child and she is not the enemy." He said, not finding any of it funny."Yeah I know.
So all this time he was using me? Furiously, I packed my bags, dumping different things into my suitcase without caring to check or fold them neatly. There was no way I would be under the same roof as him with all I just heard. The shrill sound of my ringtone filled the air, causing me to stop whatever I was doing. It was nonna. I contemplated not picking up but caved in at the last ring."Olive," Her voice was gentle, without its usual excitement ever since she found out about the unfortunate happenings around us. But her call was timely. Xander had told her for sure."You knew about this?" I asked, going straight to the point with no pleasantries."Olive," she called again. I shook my head, "Nonna you knew he was deceiving me all this time?""Olive you know he loves you. There's no doubt about it.""I don't know what to believe anymore.""He did not want to do it. I pushed him to.""Nonna you do not have to take the fall for him." I said."Why would I? I would throw him under the
My jaw ticked as soon as I spotted him hugging my woman."What are you doing here?" I asked in a controlled tone. I was trying to not be hostile but I could not help it."Xander, nice to see you again." He said with a curt nod in my direction.I immediately pulled Olive to my side, ignoring his salutation. He smiled, "I just came to offer my condolences. I'm sorry about what happened to Arya. Any news from the abductors yet?""That's none of your business." I said in a clipped tone."Xander!" Olive whisper yelled. I ignored her and faced the man who kept talking."I could be of help. I know a few people who can easily crack this case.""I have enough connections for that and I assure you all hands are on deck to find my daughter." I turned his offer down. Malik shrugged in a way that proved that my dismissal had fallen on deaf ears. "Fair enough. I'm one call away if you need me." He said to Olive, giving her arm a slight, meaningful squeeze before excusing himself.I glared at her.
I had cried so much, I could not breathe properly anymore. "My daughter! You need to find my daughter!!!" I frantically screamed, holding on the police officer like my life depended on it. It took a lot of effort from Xander to pry me off the officer who seemed to be unfazed by my antics. Of course he understood that I was a mother who was in desperate need to find her child. "Xander my baby, where is she?" I turned to him probably with a crazed look in my eyes. I was a mess. "We'll find her." He assured me, even though he looked as lost as I was. "Where could she be?" I asked, like he would have any idea. He made me sit while he gave his statement. The detective came to me after I had calmed down a bit. "Now madam, I understand you're a bit shaken, but I need you to tell us what happened." My body raked with sobs as Xander held my hand and tried to calm me down. "I went to her school to pick her up as usual and she was running towards me. Then out of nowhere, this blue sed
It felt like I had won the lottery. Every single time I looked at her, I felt my heart leap with a joy so indescribable that words could never fully explain it. So this was what it was to be loved, valued and cared for. This was what it was to be in love and wanting to spend the rest of your life with one person. I was never one to believe in having soul mates but my perception changed since I met Olive. Coming home to see their beautiful faces was the highlight of my day and waking up to see them was just what I needed to get me going. On the day we finally announced our engagement in some time in the middle of January, I got her a Cartier emerald-cut diamond ring and we had a mini photoshoot for it. The moment we posted it on our timelines, it immediately went viral with mixed reactions from internet users but of course, their opinions did not matter. "You did not tell your brother about this before now?" I asked when she dropped the call with her only sibling who did not see
Arya's first day of school had me sobbing like she was leaving the country all by herself. I was so dramatic.Waving her off was one of the hardest things to do. And because she had separation anxiety, leaving to a new place for the first time, her first day was messy. She cried so much, I wanted to change my mind and take her home with me. It took Xander's intervention for me to eventually let her go.As she went in with the minder, I saw her turn back to us every now and then until she was out of sight."She'll be fine baby." Xander reassured me, handing me his handkerchief to wipe my eyes. I covered my eyes with them as I sobbed some more, letting him console me with his gentle arm rubs."She's growing so fast." I said through a cracked voice. It felt surreal that the baby I had in what felt like yesterday just started her first day of school. I did not want to imagine how the next couple of years were going to be."Let's go." He urged me softly. We turned and headed back to the ca
