Yvette glanced anxiously at the clock.

“But where can we even run to? Ms. Hovard said the Grant family will be here in one minute.”

Yvette and I grew up in the same orphanage. We shared the same birthday and even looked alike, so everyone thought we were best friends. However, only we knew the truth—we were rivals.

She once stuffed a toad into my slipper while I poured capsaicin into her drink. She slipped laxatives into my food, making me embarrass myself in front of the boy I liked. That very night, I snuck into her room and gave her a disastrous haircut while she slept.

In my first life, the Grants came to the orphanage, saying their child had been kidnapped and abandoned here. I figured if anyone was going to benefit from it, it definitely could not be Yvette.

Hence, I beat her to it, threw myself at Mrs. Grant, clung to her leg, and tearfully called her 'Mom'. That was how I got taken home.

Not long after, Mr. Grant dragged me to the hospital, saying they needed a DNA test. They said they would only take one vial of blood, but there were already three bags beside me when I woke up.

Before I could process anything, both of them grabbed me. Their eyes blazed with rage, calling me a liar.

“You’re already deceiving people at such a young age!”

“You’re not the one we’re looking for!”

“A fake like you deserves to pay for your lies!”

They tightened their grip around my throat until my face turned blue, and I could not even cry.

With the last of my strength, I forced out a broken string of words, “I’m sorry. I was wrong. Please send me back to the orphanage…”

Mrs. Grant hesitated for a moment and was about to let go of me, but Mr. Grant stopped her cold.

“If you go soft now, when will we ever find our daughter…”

I never heard the rest. They strangled me to death.

In my second life, I learned my lesson. I deliberately gave myself food poisoning and was sent to the hospital that same day. From my hospital bed, I watched Yvette beat me to it, clinging to Mrs. Grant’s leg.

I thought, since I was not their real daughter, perhaps she was.

Sure enough, by the time I was discharged, I was told Yvette had already been taken home by the Grant family. I thought I could finally breathe easy, but while watching TV at the orphanage, I saw a news report.

A mummified corpse had been found abandoned in the wilderness, completely drained of blood. Even though the image was censored, I recognized the watch on the corpse’s wrist at a glance.

It was the birthday gift the director, Ms. Hovard, had given both Yvette and me!

In the present moment, both of us turned pale as we recalled the fates of our past lives.

I gripped my suitcase and quickened my pace. “If we avoid them now, maybe…”

Before I could finish, Ms. Hovard walked in with a smile on her face as she ushered Mr. and Mrs. Grant inside.

I quickly shoved my suitcase aside.

“Mr. Grant, we have two children here who fit the criteria.”

Mr. and Mrs. Grant stared at Yvette and me without saying a word, so the director said awkwardly, “Queenie, haven’t you always wished for someone to take you home? Mr. Grant’s child might be…”

I looked at Ms. Hovard, then at the Grant family, and suddenly pushed the stunned Yvette forward.

“Ms. Hovard, please don’t lie to me. Yvette clearly resembles this lady more. How could you make me call someone else’s mom my mom?”

Mrs. Grant’s eyes lit up as she looked at Yvette.

Yvette shot me a glare, then quickly fired back, “Ms. Hovard, why listen to Queenie? I think she looks more like that mister! Besides, we're best friends! I’m staying with her. I’m not going anywhere!”

Mr. Grant raised an eyebrow at me when he heard that.

Ms. Hovard was stuck.

“Mr. Grant, well… These two children are a match for your description. I can’t be sure right now…”

Mr. Grant made the decision on the spot. “It’s not like the Grant family can’t afford two children. We’ll take them both.”

I swallowed and exchanged a glance with Yvette. Despite the terror of being killed in my previous life, I gathered my courage and asked, “Sir, how do you know one of us is your biological child? What if neither of us is?”

“Impossible!” Mr. Grant answered without hesitation. “My child is one of the two of you.”

Public outrage spread like wildfire. By the next morning, Grant Corporation's shares had plummeted, and countless people had lined up outside the company headquarters with banners, waiting for the Grants to show their faces.Under mounting pressure, the police had no choice but to accelerate the investigation. They quickly transferred the couple to court. When the trial began, the streets around the courthouse were packed, completely blocked with people. The parents who had lost their children shouted at Mr. Grant, calling him a monster, while the insults aimed at Mrs. Grant were even harsher. There were also children who had been orphans from the start and were brutally killed by them. No one remembered their names.I sat in a corner with Yvette, watching the judge announce the verdict. The weight on my chest finally lifted.“Queenie, we did it?” Yvette asked, still dazed, gripping my hand. “Pinch me. I need to know this isn’t a dream.”I gave her a sharp pinch. When she squir

By the time Yvette and I walked out of the police station, she still looked dazed.“Queenie, we both entered the Grant family together, so why do you know so much more than I do?”I gave a faint smile and explained, “Do you remember what I told you the day before the DNA test?”She froze for a few seconds, clearly trying to piece together the hidden meaning behind my words that day.“That day, I went into Mr. Grant’s study and saw a family photo in the corner.”Yvette shot me a confused look.“Just from a photo, you figured all this out?”I nodded, then shook my head. “Of course, I did some digging afterward. But the main thing was, Mr. Grant guarded his study closely. I couldn’t get in without his permission.”As Yvette stared at me wide-eyed, I went on calmly, “So, that night, after everyone fell asleep, I cut the power, picked the lock, and went in. That was when I saw all the evidence. I put everything back, though. I didn’t want to tip them off.”Realization dawned on her

“What?!” Yvette shrieked again, but I ignored her and handed the file over to the police. “Most people might not know this, but Mr. and Mrs. Grant had a son, and he died six years ago.”The lead officer had not even opened the file yet, but a flicker of doubt crossed his face. Mrs. Grant, however, reacted as though a nerve had been struck. She yelled at me, “That’s nonsense! My son isn’t dead! He’s not dead! Don’t you dare say that. My son is alive!”Mr. Grant shook his head frantically. “It’s all fabricated! Officer, she’s just an orphan. What could she possibly know? She lied to get adopted! You can’t believe her!”Unmoved, I continued amid the chaos.“They refused to accept their son’s death. They searched everywhere for cures, slowly losing their sanity. Somewhere along the way, they heard that if they gathered seven girls born at the dead of night on the darkest day and used their blood to cover the body, they could bring their son back to life.“Now, they’re only missing the

Gasping for breath, Yvette burst in with the police. The moment she saw what was happening, she shouted, “Officer! Look! I told you, the president of Grant Corporation is trying to harm his own daughter! Did you see the syringe in his hand?”Mrs. Grant panicked and loosened her grip. I fell to the floor.Freed from my restraints, I dove behind the police and pointed at Mr. Grant.“Officer, please! My dad’s gone insane. He thinks I’m trying to steal the Grant family's fortune, so he wants to kill me!”The syringe clattered to the ground. Mr. Grant’s voice shook as he stammered at the police officer, “N-No, it’s not like that! It’s her, it’s Queenie! She bribed the medical staff and faked the DNA results. That’s why I…”The officers stepped forward and handcuffed both of them.“Anything you need to explain, you’ll do it at the station. We’ll also test the liquid in the syringe.”Mr. and Mrs. Grant yelled in outrage as they were led away to a police car, while Yvette and I climbed

“I’m the real heiress of the Grant family.”“No way!” Yvette screamed, protesting, but then she realized we were not at the orphanage. She clamped her hands over her mouth and shook her head in panic.“You died so horribly in your last life. Ms. Hovard had to collect your body. I got there too late and only saw your ashes. And now, you’re saying you’re the real heiress? Who are you trying to fool? No parent could be that cruel to actually kill their own child.”I let out a sigh, not bothering to answer her. “I am, but not entirely. It could also be you. In short, it’s complicated. Just do what I say, and neither of us will die…”Yvette struggled to process what I was telling her, then nodded slowly. She was still confused. The next day arrived quickly. Yvette nervously tugged at my sleeve as we followed Mr. and Mrs. Grant into the hospital. The moment we saw the person in charge, Yvette blurted out unexpectedly, “Mom, Dad, I know I might not be your daughter. Can I be the first t

I was lost in thought when a ridiculous idea suddenly popped into my head. Before I could think it through, Yvette yanked me back into the room.“So? Did you find out anything?" "She said there’s no rush to take us for the DNA test.”She rolled her eyes when she heard me. There was a mix of cluelessness and innocence on her face. Yvette had yanked me so hard that it hurt. Only after forcing my way free did I speak, feeling annoyed. “What, are you trying to see who can survive longer? I suggest you focus. We’re both in the same boat. At this rate, we’ll both end up dead!”Yvette scratched her head and smiled sheepishly at me. “No, I know you’re smarter than me, but I’m just anxious! You lived a few days longer than I did in our previous life. I died that same day…” Then, she turned her face away awkwardly. “And even though we argue and fight, I never intended to actually hurt you. At most… I just wanted to annoy you a little.”I shot her a glance, sighed, and gave a helpless,
