The Eagle section was dead silent, but the Highland side made up for it. High fives, loud cheers, and whistles swept through the stands. Christine realized that she was one of the loudest fans as she yelled and screamed her approval. Her sisters and mother were right next to her, showing their excitement over the turn of events.
"My God, Christine. He must have thrown that ball fifty yards. He sure seems serious about winning this game and keeping his date," laughed Maddie. "Hailey, let me have those binoculars so I can get a good look at our hero."Maddie focused in on number twelve as he and his teammates slapped each other on the back. She quickly determined that Mitchell was an extremely popular man now. He was taller than all but a couple of linemen and looked every bit as strong. Then she saw him scanning the Highland cheering section, obviously looking for someone."Wave ladies," Maddie instructed as she held her free hand high and whipped it around. "Our hero is looking for Christine to make sure she saw that great play. Let him know what we think."With that, Hailey and Melissa stood up again and began waving frantically toward the Highland bench area. Reluctantly, Christine stood up and gave her best imitation of the Queen of England by moving her hand back and forth a few inches in front of her face."I don't know how, but he found you, Christine. His smile just doubled in size. Maybe Hailey, Mom, and I helped a little by being such boisterous fans," suggested Maddie. "Holy cow. He's a gorgeous looking man, Christine. You started right at the top."The score was tied at half Time at 28. The Highland offense managed to score every time it had the ball. Mitchell passed on most plays, but they did very well every time they handed the ball off to the running back. The Highland defense had begun to stiffen and once they began to slow down Ellis, Eagle had no alternatives. They tried a few passes, but their quarterback showed poor decision making and a weak arm.Highland scored on the first possession of the second half to take the lead and never looked back. The final score was 49-31. When the game ended Highland's faithful poured onto the Field and mobbed the players. Melissa could see Mitchell smile as fans and players slapped his back and shook his hand."Sis. Should we go down and congratulate our newfound hero?" teased Hailey. "It looks like the cheerleaders are doing just that. Look at those shameless hussies hugging Mitchell and kissing his cheeks. We need to get you down there to stake out your claim. Let's go.""No, Hailey. I'm not going to make an ass of myself in front of those bimbos. I told you that he'd have all kinds of pretty girls after him. It just happened faster than I had anticipated. I never dreamed he'd be such an athlete. Let's go home," added an obviously dejected Christine as she started down to the exit.In order to leave the stands, they had to descend down almost to the playing Field, then turn and go out a runway under the bleachers. Christine was just beginning to make the turn when she heard her name called. Surprised, she looked over her shoulder to see Mitchell standing near the bleachers. He was looking directly at her and ignoring all the well-wishers around him. Christine felt hands push her toward the railing. Her feet seemed to move of their own accord as she shuffled up to the railing and looked down at Mitchell.Mitchell smiled, reached up and grabbed the rail and vaulted up so he stood on the platform near Christine, with the handrail between them. Those fans that had been headed for the exits all seemed to stop, and suddenly became incredibly quiet."I'm going to need directions to your house so I can pick you up for the dance tomorrow night, Christine. What time should I get there? What's your phone number? You aren't going to back out on me, are you?" quizzed Mitchell as a beautiful blonde girl suddenly stepped up to him and hugged him tightly over the railing."Give me your number and I'll get you all of Christine's information. I'm her sister, Maddie, and you've made my day. Look at all of those cheerleaders with their mouths hanging open," whispered Maddie directly into Mitchell's ear. "You be good to Christine. She's really, really smart about a lot of things, but she's new to this. Please don't hurt her."With that, Maddie stepped back and declared, "Hailey, you weren't kidding. Christine's new boyfriend is a hunk. It makes me wish I was three years younger. Mitchell, can you ride back to Highland with us, or do you have to ride the team bus?""Coach wants us to ride the bus. Otherwise, I'd take you up on that offer, Maddie," replied Mitchell as he placed his hands on the noticeably silent Christine's elbows and smiled. "Thanks, Christine, for giving in and letting me take you to the dance."Christine felt like she was in a dream. Who knew how many people had just listened to the star quarterback practically beg her for a date. Mitchell's hands on her arms made her skin tingle when he touched her. She saw Maddie hand Mitchell her phone and he punched in some numbers and returned it to Maddie."Thanks for coming to the game," added Mitchell as he bent close to Christine. "I'll see you tomorrow night. Call me with the time."Mitchell turned and stepped back down to the Field and trotted past the stunned cheerleaders and headed for the showers. Christine felt hands turn her around and gently push her toward the exit. As she walked, she once again became aware of her surroundings. Maddie held her hand and was smiling like the cat that ate the canary. Her mother and Hailey were right behind them, laughing and chatting with fellow fans. Christine began to catch parts of the conversations going on around her."That kid sure took the school by storm." laughed Ken Smith, president of the local bank, as well as father of Tyler Smith, the team's starting tight end. "He plays quarterback like a pro, and then sweet talks the school's prettiest girl into going to the dance with him tomorrow. I'd better keep an eye on this boy, or he'll have my job before Christmas.""Melissa, did you see the look on the faces of all the cheerleaders when that boy made a beeline for Christine? It was so funny to watch, even though my daughter, Molly, is one of the cheerleaders," added Sally Fields. "This just might help curb that entitlement attitude the girls have developed. The team quarterback went out with the class valedictorian. That is just priceless."The ride home was one of the best trips the family had ever experienced. All four Leonard women were laughing as they recounted various incidents that had seen and heard at the game. Christine had been nervous and embarrassed, but the absolute joy her family felt was infectious. She couldn't help smiling as she recalled the way Mitchell spoke to her and the reactions it created."Christine, I have to admit I had some serious doubts about Hailey's evaluation of your boyfriend, but I've got to tell you, he's the real deal. You didn't notice, but I hugged him while you were in your trance. I didn't want to do it, but I had to make the arrangements for your date and you sure weren't helping. Boys do like girls that don't talk too much but take my advice and speak to him once in a while, okay?" chuckled Maddie. "So anyway, when I hugged him, it was like wrapping my arms around a piece of steel and squeezing, except way better. He's tall, dark, very handsome , and what a body.""I can't wait for the dance tomorrow night," added Hailey. "I just want to see the faces of everyone when they see my sister with the best-looking guy in the place. He’ll dance with me a few Times. You won't mind, Will you, Christine?" "Please don't get all carried away, Maddie and Hailey. Mitchell was nice to me today. I admit that it made me feel pretty darn good. But he isn't my boyfriend. You saw how those girls looked at him. What are my chances of keeping him interested in more than a week or two? I never had a boyfriend, let alone one like Mitchell. I'm not good at playing games and using sex to keep him isn't even on the table. I'm not going to take a chance on ruining my reputation, or my future over some boy," insisted Christine. "Christine, sex should never be used to control a partner, so I can't argue with that attitude. But it doesn't have to ruin your reputation, or your life, if you're mature and responsible," counseled Melissa. "It can be a wonderful experience that
Christine was certain that Mitchell would be insulted and leave the house. For her part, she had never been so humiliated. "Dad," cried Hailey. "It's okay, Hailey. Your dad has a good point there. I'll tell you this, sir. I never intended to force Christine to do anything against her wishes. I would never do that, unless it was done to save her from pain or injury. I asked her out and she declined, but her reasons sounded hollow to me, so I decided to press Christine a little. If Christine simply tells me that she truly does not want to go with me tonight, I will leave and never bother her again. However, Sir, it is my belief and hope that Christine is more than willing to accompany me to the dance. Let's ask her when she comes down, shall we?" "Okay, son. You stated your case well. We'll do that, but there are a couple other things that you need to know," continued Christine's father. "You'll never go out with Christine again if you use alcohol, or tobacco. If I hear that you drive
Christine was surprised both by Mitchell's response to her apology and his declaration that she had a great family. She thought it over and realized that she'd never given much thought to how lucky she was to have the family she had. Maddie had loaned her the red dress and spent hours helping her prepare for her first real date. What more could you ask from a big sister? Christine also realized that she knew almost nothing about Mitchell and really needed to learn more. It then occurred to her that that was the very reason people dated. She had underestimated its value. Mitchell had spent some time with Tim Smith in an effort to know what to expect at the benefit dance. It was important to Mitchell that he make friends and be accepted in his new town. He didn't want to ruin things because he didn't understand customs in the area. He felt as prepared as he could be for what he expected to be a very memorable evening. As Christine and Mitchell entered the VFW hall, a tall thin girl app
"Ladies and Gentlemen, I'm Sammy Ace and I'll be your host and DJ this evening. As you all know, this is a benefit for Mike Smith. That means we're going to try to raise money, which means that I'll expect everyone here to do their part. To start with, is there anyone here that would refuse to allow me to auction off a dance with them, or their partner? If so, please step over against that wall by the picture window? No one? Great. We'll be getting under way in a couple minutes. Later, you'll be hearing from Mike Smith to thank you for your kindness, so give it until it hurts, Ladies and Gentlemen," pleaded the DJ. Mitchell couldn't help but appreciate how cleverly the disc jockey had placed everyone at the dance in a position to be auctioned off. A lot of people would not have raised their hands if volunteers had been sought, but by asking them to move to an area, they would have had to be proactive in not participating. People too shy to participate would be reluctant to be seen rem
"Careful, Big Boy," chided Christine. "Remember 'the talk' my father gave you. He's watching us right now. You don't want to face his wrath, do you?" "I think I'd risk almost anything for you, Christine, but not your reputation. Can I give you a brief kiss when the song ends?" asked Mitchell. "It would be very quick, and no one would notice." "Yeah, right, you silver tongued devil. If you're willing to face the wrath of my father, go for it, Tough Guy. But don't say I didn't warn you," advised Christine. As the song ended, Mitchell bent over and briefly kissed Christine on the lips and then quickly pulled back from her. To his surprise, the entire building broke into applause and cheers. There were more than a few whistles and cat calls as well. Men slapped him on the back as he led Christine back to her seat. Mitchell was surprised to find both Ashley and Amy in tears. "That was the most beautiful, romantic thing I've ever seen," sobbed Ashley. "It looked like a scene out of Prett
"It really works both ways, guys," observed Mitchell. "They probably think that you look down on them for not being as smart as you are. That discomfort they show could be caused by fearing that they'll say or do something you feel is stupid. It's all a question of communication and insecurities. We all have them, and we need to understand that fact.""What in the world could you be insecure about, Mitchell?" asked Ashley. "You're big, strong, good looking, athletic, apparently pretty smart, and a hell of a dancer. I don't think you have any insecurity at all.""Ashley, just how dumb do you think I am? If I told you my weaknesses, you'd be able to reduce me to a quivering mass of Jell-O. I'm not about to give you that kind of power over me." admitted Mitchell."You're just afraid that I'd force you to let me have my way with you. I've asked some of the guys on the football team about the showers tonight and I hear that you're the guy I should interview," replied Ashley as she once aga
"Oh, no,” cried Christine. "Could you see if anyone was looking at us?""It wasn't too bad," soothed Mitchell. "It looked like it was just your sisters, parents, Aunt Donna, and a few other people I don't know. All of them were looking at us. Other than that, I think we went unnoticed."The door slowly opened, and Melissa stuck her head out and grimaced. "Christine, Hailey is so sorry. She saw you coming up the drive and was so excited to see you and Mitchell. She thought you were going to walk right in, so she hurried to the door to welcome you. She wasn't trying to be cruel. She's just so excited she couldn't contain herself. Mitchell, will you please come in for a while and meet everyone. It'll be fine. We were all young once."With that, Melissa swung the door open and gestured for Christine and Mitchell to enter. Every person in the room was straining to keep a straight face, except Hailey. She had a look of utter dread. Mitchell grabbed her and pulled her to him."What should I
"I'll keep the door closed." promised Hailey with a laugh.Christine was smiling as she pulled the door closed behind her. She stood with Mitchell on the front porch for a while before she spoke. "We're having a Labor Day pool party here Monday afternoon. Would you like to come, Mitchell? It's okay with my folks. In fact, Mom insisted that I invite you," confessed Christine."How do you feel about it? Do you want me to come? Your mom is great, but if I come, it'll be mostly to see you," stated Mitchell frankly."You like to bring me out of my comfort zone all the time, don't you? Okay, then. I was trying to invite you without seeming all needy and desperate, so I used Mom as an excuse. I'm inviting you to the party because I want you to come. I want you to come to spend time with me. Is that direct enough?" asked a surprised Christine as Mitchell stepped close and kissed her lips just as she finished speaking."Should I take that as a "yes" then?" smiled Christine as she looked into h
