Chapter 6

Author: Anonymous
"Are you two planning to have a baby?"

"Why do you ask?"

The vet gave a somewhat rueful smile.

"A lot of the cats and dogs we get here are in the same situation. Their owners are planning to have a baby, so they decide they can't keep their pets anymore and bring them here to be put up for adoption."

A baby was indeed on the way.

Just not his.

Nathaniel was reluctant to part with the kitten.

After all, he'd raised it for years and grown deeply attached to it.

But if he was going to leave, taking the kitten with him would be difficult. He was worried the long flight and the time spent in cargo might put it at risk.

"Please help find someone to adopt the kitten as soon as possible."

"Actually, a young woman came in today and spent quite a while playing with the kitten. She seemed to really like it. I'll get in touch with her and see if she’s interested."

The vet contacted her, and she immediately agreed to adopt the kitten. She said she could come pick it up right away.

Nathaniel waited at the clinic for a while and met her in person.

She was a sweet, innocent young woman who genuinely loved the kitten.

Nathaniel agreed to let her adopt it and even gave her some extra money.

But she refused to take the money. "I'm adopting the kitten, so how could I possibly take your money, too? Please, take it back."

Nathaniel insisted on pressing the money into her hands. "The kitten is getting older, and it has a hereditary condition, so you'll probably have to spend quite a bit on vet bills. Just consider this an advance payment for its medical expenses."

The young woman finally accepted the money and thanked him before leaving with the kitten in her arms.

His phone buzzed with an incoming message.

Jessica: "Honey, are you having fun today? I miss you so much."

Nathaniel let out a cold laugh.

He replied, "Then I'll catch a flight back to see you right now. Come pick me up at the airport in three hours."

Jessica replied almost immediately. "No, don't cut your trip short because of me. Enjoy yourself. I can wait."

Nathaniel almost scoffed.

Jessica, your love was so cheap.

You couldn't even pass this little test, yet you still pretended to love me so deeply.

Jessica: "Did you take any nice pictures? Let me see some handsome shots of you, honey."

Nathaniel searched online for a few photos of local attractions, removed the watermarks, and sent them to her.

Jessica: "Why are they all pictures of the scenery? Where are the pictures of you, honey?"

Nathaniel: "I'm tired. I'm going to bed."

Jessica: "Okay, get some rest. Love you."

Nathaniel spent three days resting at the hotel and planning his itinerary.

After leaving here, he wanted to visit the four countries of Nordavia first to see the northern lights, then head to Savara to see its wildlife and vast grasslands.

After that, he even arranged to lease an uninhabited island called Haven Isle.

The island belonged to a small neighboring country and wasn't for sale, so he leased it for a hundred years.

It was the home he'd chosen for himself.

From then on, he'd live facing the sea, with flowers blooming in the warmth of spring.

On the morning of the fifth day, instead of checking out, Nathaniel extended his stay for another two days to keep his luggage there until he was ready to leave.

Then he took a cab to the airport.

Arthur arrived not long afterward.

He grinned and said, "Mr. Scott, you're finally back! Ms. Sullivan has been talking about you nonstop these past two days. We're practically getting tired of hearing your name!"

Nathaniel didn't respond. He simply got into the car.

He'd heard enough empty words already. He didn't want to respond, lest he have to listen to even more lies.

When he got home, everything seemed to be back to normal, just as it had been before he left.

Jessica threw her arms around him. "Honey, welcome home!"

Clara was equally delighted. "Mr. Scott, Ms. Sullivan told me first thing this morning to buy some of your favorite ingredients. I made all your favorite dishes today."

Jessica snuggled up to him, gently nuzzling him. "They say absence makes the heart grow fonder. So... how about we turn in early tonight?"

Nathaniel pushed her away. "I'm tired."

"No, don't be like that! I've missed you so much."

She tried to cling to him again, but the next second, the front door swung open.

York stood in the doorway, looking a little flustered. "Oh, Mr. Scott, you're back?"

Nathaniel felt the arms wrapped around him stiffen instantly.

He smiled faintly. "Mr. Lawrence, long time no see. What brings you back to Zelvania all of a sudden? Was life abroad not to your liking?"

"I..." York hesitated. "I just left my wallet at home. I'll grab it and then leave."

The moment he finished speaking, a deafening crash erupted above him.

The massive crystal chandelier in the villa had come loose and was crashing down.

In the split second before impact, Jessica rushed toward York and threw herself over him. "Look out!"

Jessica strode in, her face dark with anger. In a cold voice, she demanded, "Tell me. How long has this affair been going on? The doctor just told me the baby's deformity was caused by a sexually transmitted disease, and I thought... So it turns out you two are the ones with the problem."York and Natalie immediately went weak at the knees with fear. Natalie even tried to run, but she was no match for Jessica. If Jessica hadn't wanted to get her own hands dirty, she would have beaten Natalie half to death right then and there. Instead, she waited for the bodyguards to arrive before ordering them to drag Natalie away.Jessica stared coldly at York as he begged for mercy. "Don't worry. You did save my life once, after all, so I'll only throw her into the sea and let her experience the same agony Nathaniel once suffered. As for you, go to Sundara and rot there. Let the disease eat away at you until you're nothing but a stinking, festering mess!"With York finally facing the consequences o

Jessica practically snatched the letter from the maid's hands. Thinking it contained a clue he'd left for her, she hurriedly tore it open. But as she read, despair gradually filled her eyes. The letter was written in Zelvanian, in Ash's own hand. He had even signed it with the name Nathaniel Scott, using the same elegant handwriting as before. Yet his words were utterly calm and detached, as though he truly no longer felt the slightest affection for her."Jessica, let this be the end of it. Let me go, and set yourself free, too. If you ever loved Nathaniel, even just a little, then please do me this one favor and let him go."The letter was so brief that she could read it all at a glance. There were no accusations or resentment in his words. It was just a quiet farewell, one that meant they would never see each other again.Jessica clutched the thin sheet of paper tightly, laughing and crying as she stood there for a long time. The maid grew worried that the shock had driven her mad an

The moment the door opened, a bone-chilling wind swept over Tessa, but she didn't hesitate. She walked outside with unruffled composure and didn't stop until she stood face-to-face with Jessica."Ms. Sullivan, why are you putting yourself through all this?"After everything she'd endured, Jessica had grown gaunt and haggard, looking nothing like the successful woman she'd once been. She gritted her teeth and snapped, "Nathaniel is my husband. We're not divorced yet.""No. He's Ash. Nathaniel is dead. You beat him savagely and then threw him into the sea to drown," Tessa reminded her calmly."I've learned pretty much everything about your history with Nathaniel. You were the one who wanted to have it both ways, and you chose York first. If that was your choice, you should be prepared to face the consequences of being abandoned. He's simply doing what you wanted to do yourself. Please respect his decision."With that, she extended a hand in a clear gesture of dismissal. Even when she saw

The bodyguards stationed outside the ballroom were quick to read the situation. They had already brought the car as close to the entrance as possible. One now held an umbrella while the other opened the car door, making sure Tessa and Ash could get inside without getting soaked. But before the car door could close, someone rushed up to Ash through the wind and rain. It was Jessica, looking utterly disheveled. The bodyguards hadn't expected Jessica to return so soon after being thrown out once already. They hurried forward to stop her several yards away, but even that couldn't keep her desperate cries from carrying through the pouring rain."Nathaniel! It's me! Have you really forgotten everything we've been through together? We grew up together, and we've known each other for over twenty years. No one knows you better than I do, and no one knows me better than you. I was wrong about what happened before, but I didn't know it was you. Please, forgive me..."Jessica was drenched from hea

Jessica's voice faded into the distance as the bodyguards hurriedly dragged her away, but the mood had already been ruined, and there was no bringing it back.It wasn't until Tessa, seemingly oblivious to everyone around her, slipped the ring back onto Ash's ring finger that the guests' doubts were finally put to rest. What that crazy woman said had to be a lie. Otherwise, why would Tessa so solemnly propose to another woman's husband?Seeing this, the Harpers, who had still been harboring doubts, finally breathed a sigh of relief. Now, they could only feel genuine sympathy for the engaged couple and what they'd endured. It was such a shame that a romantic proposal had been ruined by a lunatic.Only Ash, standing on the stage, knew that everything Jessica had said was true. Before the proposal began, the sky had been somewhat overcast, but by Nordavia's winter standards, the weather had been surprisingly pleasant. By the time the ceremony was over, however, rain had begun to fall.Ash

  • Who Will Grow Old With Me?   Chapter 17

Jessica had never built up a network of her own in Norvale, nor had she ever cultivated ties with anyone there. As a result, she was just an ordinary person with no influence or connections. If she wanted to find someone, she would have to start from scratch. But just when she finally managed to track down Ash, she unexpectedly learned that he was about to get engaged to someone else. She rushed to the venue without a moment to spare. In an instant, every eye in the room turned to Jessica, everyone wondering what on earth she was up to. The question asked during the ceremony was merely a formality. Who could be so socially clueless as to interrupt and object at a time like this?Jessica had worn herself ragged trying to find Ash, but she couldn't have cared less about how she looked. She looked at Ash, whose face had gone pale as though some terrible memory had come flooding back to him. Stepping forward, she said, "I'm sorry, Nathaniel. I've come to take you home."When she saw that h
