Chapter 2

作者: Pinehart
“I won't accept anything but his imprisonment, plus $100,000 in total compensation for emotional distress, lost wages, and damage to my reputation!”

‘$100,000?!’ I thought.

She must be out of her mind with her obsession with money.

I snorted and said, “$100,000? Why don’t you just rob a bank?”

Fiona pointed at me, cursed, and said, “A broke driver like you can’t earn $100,000 in your entire life! If you can’t pay that, then rot in jail!”

Lemony knocked on the desk impatiently. “Enough! Let’s get the facts straight first. Do you have a dashcam in the car?”

When he mentioned the dashcam, I felt even more confident.

“Yes. I have a dual-lens dashcam. Everything’s recorded on the memory card.”

Fiona’s face changed for a moment. But the next second, she resumed her smug-looking facade.

“He definitely deleted the footage! He was messing with his phone in the car earlier!”

I did not bother to respond to her. I said to Lemony, “The memory card is still inside the dashcam. You can go and retrieve it. I’m innocent. The footage will make that clear.”

Lemony nodded. He sent an officer to my car to collect the evidence. My car had already been impounded and was sitting in the station yard.

Just then, someone pushed open the door to the mediation room.

A burly man, with tattooed arms and a thick gold chain around his neck, entered the room.

The moment I saw him, I knew things were about to get a lot worse.

“Who is it? Who harassed my wife?”

His voice was loud enough to rattle the glass in the room.

When Fiona saw him, she practically launched herself into his arms. She cried even harder than before.

“Drake, it’s him! He’s a pervert! He touched me and attempted to harass me!”

Drake glared at me viciously.

He strode over and raised his hand. He wanted to hit me.

Lemony acted swiftly by stepping between us and stopping him.

“What’re you doing? This is a police station! Are you trying to start a fight here?”

Drake pulled his hand away. He pointed at me.

“Fine! Since the cops are here, I won’t lay a finger on you, kid. Just you wait. Once we’re out of the door, I’ll kill you!” Drake said threateningly.

I did not flinch. I only pushed back harder when pressured.

I met his gaze. “Really? I’d like to see exactly how you’re going to kill me.”

Apparently, Drake did not expect me to be so stubborn. He was stunned momentarily. Then, he let out a bark of vicious laughter.

“You’ve got a sharp tongue! Honey, tell the police exactly how this punk treated you. We’ve got money. All we want now is justice.”

With someone backing her up, Fiona grew bolder.

“That’s right! You must be punished! Asking for $100,000 earlier was letting you off easy. I want $200,000 now! Not a penny less!”

I laughed.

Did she think this police station was an auction house where she could raise the price as she saw fit?

“You’re blackmailing me,” I said calmly.

“Blackmailing?” Drake slammed his palm on the table.

“You touched my wife’s thigh and attempted to ruin her dignity. What’s wrong with asking you for some money? If we weren’t in a society governed by law, you’d have already lost an arm!”

Lemony snapped, “Watch your mouth! Sit down!”

Drake cursed under his breath as he dragged a chair and sat next to Fiona.

The two whispered to each other and occasionally shot me nasty looks.

It did not take long before the officer returned with the evidence.

He had my dashcam in his hand, but he looked troubled.

“Sergeant Lemony, this cam has no recording.”

“What?!” I was stunned.

“The memory card is broken. There’s no data on it at all.” The officer shook his head.

My heart sank.

“Officer, how could that be possible?”

I checked the dashcam every day. It was working fine.

The moment Fiona heard that, she perked right up.

“I told you he deleted it! He destroyed the evidence. Sir, you’ve got to do something!”

Drake played along. “Isn’t it obvious? If he has nothing to hide, why delete the footage? This kid’s clearly a repeat offender!”

Lemony’s gaze hardened as he looked at me.

“Explain yourself. Why is the dashcam broken?”

I opened my mouth but had no words to defend myself.

Saying the dashcam just malfunctioned sounded like a weak excuse, even to me.

“I didn’t delete anything. Maybe the memory card itself is faulty or…”

Three days later, I received an official confirmation from the police.Fiona and Drake faced charges of attempted blackmail and creating a public disturbance. Both were being held in criminal detention.Drake was no stranger to trouble with unsolved prior offenses to his name. This time, he would be sentenced to jail for at least three to five years.Fiona’s parents had somehow tracked down my place. They looked like an honest couple. They wore washed-out jackets and stood at the entrance of my apartment with two boxes of milk. The moment they saw me, they instantly dropped to their knees with a thud.“Miss, we beg you. Please spare Fiona!”Fiona’s mother, Angelina, cried so hard that snot and tears ran down her face. She repeatedly prostrated on the concrete floor.“She’s still young! She doesn’t know any better. It was just a stupid mistake! If she ends up with a criminal record, her whole life will be ruined!”Neighbors peeked from their door. They whispered and gossiped am

“I’m a woman too, and I have absolutely no interest in a lying, cigarette-smoking, trashy piece of work like you!”“How dare you?!” Fiona pointed at me with a trembling finger. But not a single word came out of her mouth beyond that.Drake finally snapped out of his daze. He lunged at me and tried to snatch away my ID.“This doesn’t count! Even women can harass people! You’re definitely a pervert!”Before he reached me, I sidestepped. In one smooth motion, I kicked him in the back of the knee.Drake dropped to his knees with a thud.“You wanted me to kneel, right?” I looked down at him. “Tell me, who’s kneeling now?”At that moment, the tide of public opinion reversed. The same people who had cursed me the loudest turned their fire on Fiona.“It was really a false accusation!”“I knew it! This woman looked shady from the start!”“She’s got no shame! She’s trying to blackmail people for money!”But that still was not enough.I did not just want to clear my name; I also want

Fiona sat on the main seat. She had exquisite makeup on, but she had deliberately made herself look haggard. When she looked at me, her gaze shone with pride and greed.Drake walked over and yanked off my cap.“Everyone, look! Here’s Chris, the Grab driver!”The flashes from the cameras went crazy. The number of livestream viewers instantly surged past 100,000.Drake shoved the microphone into my hand.“Go on then, just like we agreed. Apologize and pay up.”The microphone felt heavy in my hand.I looked at the crowd under the stage. They held up their phones, and their faces lit up with excitement. Then, I turned to Fiona and Drake on the stage. They looked so sure of their victory.I felt sorry for them.Truly, I did.“Before I apologize, I’ve got a few questions for Ms. Lambert.”My voice echoed through the microphone across the conference room.Fiona froze. The next moment, she snapped impatiently, “If you’ve got something to say, spit it out! Don’t try any new tricks

“Also, don’t tell anyone you ever lived here! You’re an embarrassment!”Right after Madam Wendy finished her sentence, she slammed the door with a loud bang.I stood at the entrance. I stared with a bitter smile at the refunded amount on the phone screen that had been returned to me.I had lost my job.My reputation was ruined.I did not even have a place to stay. All because I told my passenger not to smoke in the car. This world was truly absurd. But I did not immediately walk out.I closed the door and pulled the curtains. After that, I turned on my secondhand laptop. The clip on the internet continued to go viral.Fiona had done three livestreams already. The amount of tips she received was probably more than what I made as a Grab driver for an entire year. On the livestreams, she cried her eyes out about how I “threatened” her and had “ill intentions” against her.She came up with a lot of extra details. She said I locked the car doors, verbally abused her, and even

“Why did you delete the footage from your dashcam?”“Do you feel any remorse at all?”I said nothing. I lowered my head and tried to push my way through the crowd.Drake and a few of his men blocked my way.“Trying to get away from us, huh? No way!” Drake pushed me. “You need to give us an explanation today! You’re not going anywhere!”I stumbled from the impact. The crowd egged him on. Someone hurled a plastic water bottle at me.“Beat the pervert to death!”“Trash!”I wiped the water off my face. I stared at Drake icily.“Move.”“Still acting tough, huh?” The fat on his face jiggled as he sneered.“Hey, everyone, look at his attitude! He has no remorse even now!”He held up his phone and recorded everything live. The screen was flooded with comments, with every single one hurling abuse at me.Fiona rushed forward and broke down in front of the camera. “Everyone, I had a nightmare last night! The moment I closed my eyes, I saw his disgusting face! I honestly don’t know

The next few hours were pure hell.Without the dashcam, the police could not charge me. But they could not clear me either.According to police procedure, they had to detain me for questioning. Fiona and Drake made a big fuss outside the police station. They demanded that the police send me to jail with immediate effect.Meanwhile, the incident blew up online.Fiona was a local content creator with a decent number of followers.
