“Then what are you calling me about?”

“It’s about your mother.” Lucas replied solemnly.

My heart skipped a bit. “What about my mother?” I parked the car by the roadside, bracing myself up for what was about to come.

“She said I shouldn’t tell you but I can’t keep something like this from you.”

“Okay. I’m listening.”

“She’s sick.”

Ever since my dad passed and the weight of the family and work fell on my shoulders, my mom barely brought her problems to me. According to her, she didn’t want to add to my burdens.

But in a situation like this, I expected her to come to me first. It was no surprise she confided in Lucas. They had been really close before he even started working with my father.

“What’s wrong with her? I’ll talk to you later, I have to call her now.”

“No. Don’t call her, everything is taken care of now.” Lucas interjected.

“What do you mean ‘everything is taken care of’?”

“It’s just the early stage of the disease.”
