Chapter 4

Author: Plummy Plum
"I'm not lying. What would I gain from that? Yes, our daughter needs money to save her life. But it can't come from your ill-gotten funds! If you use dirty money, she'll only be ridiculed and looked down on!" Russell said brazenly.

I fixed my gaze on Russell and spoke, "Russell, Alicia is your only child. To frame me, are you really willing to disregard her life?"

His eyes were icy, yet his voice sounded earnest.

"Melissa, I'm doing this for our daughter! Stop being so stubborn. Turn yourself in. I'll find another way to pay for her surgery. Alicia and I will wait for you so our family can be reunited after you serve your time."

His emotional performance quickly won over the crowd.

"It looks like her husband really isn't lying. What kind of father would ignore his daughter's life just to frame his wife?"

"Exactly. I heard they only have one child. Of course, a father wouldn't bear to see his daughter unable to afford surgery. But if the money is illegal, it shouldn't be used no matter what."

"Russell is being rational. If they don't have money for surgery, crowdfunding online would still be better than embezzling company funds."

"And the company's missing more than a million. Surgery wouldn't cost that much. Melissa is just using her daughter's illness as an excuse to spend the money on herself."

Standing side by side, Russell and Kristen looked at me with smug satisfaction.

My face remained expressionless, though inside, doubts churned.

Russell had often complained about our daughter's frequent illnesses, saying the medical expenses lowered his quality of life. He had even once urged me to give up on her treatment and try for a healthy baby boy instead.

But our daughter only had a heart condition—it wasn't terminal. As long as the surgery succeeded, she could be cured.

There was no way I would abandon her. After that, Russell had never brought it up again.

Now I had won 800 thousand dollars. With that money, her illness could be treated immediately, and there would still be a substantial sum left over.

I was also about to be promoted with a raise. Our future would only grow brighter.

So why was he so determined to betray me with Kristen?

After all, Kristen was already married, with a husband and a two-year-old son. What made Russell think that getting involved with her wouldn't end with her husband finding out and beating him to death?

If he insisted on having an affair, he could at least have chosen a single woman. Why entangle himself with someone who already had a family?

Seeing me stand there in silence, Russell assumed I had run out of options.

Putting on a look of gentle concern, he said, "Melissa, you've already broken the law. There's no escaping it. Think of it as setting an example for our daughter. Turn yourself in. I promise I'll make sure she gets the treatment she needs. All right?"

Kristen added smugly, "Melissa, I have a son too. I understand how a mother would do anything for her child. Precisely because of that, you should surrender for your daughter's future."

I stared at the two of them exchanging knowing glances. In a sudden flash of realization, scattered details from the past came together, and at last I understood why they had colluded to betray me.

At that moment, the general manager said impatiently, "Call the police."

I glanced at my phone and curved my lips into a faint smile.

"No need. The police are already on their way."

As soon as the words left my mouth, several officers stepped into the office.

Russell and Kristen were overjoyed. They hurriedly pointed at me.

"Officer, that's her—that's Melissa. Take her away!"

The officer looked at me, nodded, then asked, "Which one of you is Kristen Meyer?"

I sneered, my voice cold and sharp."I despise that illegitimate child. I never want to see him again. You'll send him away immediately, and then I'll consider writing a letter of leniency for Russell."The two old fools froze, hesitation and reluctance written all over their faces—they clearly didn't want to part with their eldest grandson.I let a small, cruel smile tug at my lips."Reluctant, are you? Fine. Then get out of here and stop bothering me!""We… we'll listen to you. We'll send the child away immediately!"Apparently, in their eyes, their son still mattered more than their grandson.Watching their hurried retreat, I slowly curved my lips into a satisfied smile. Whether they actually sent that child away or not, there was no way I would ever write Russell a single word of leniency. I wanted him to rot in prison and suffer firsthand every ounce of pain I endured in my previous life. Before heading to the hospital, I instructed the security guards at my community gate

The elderly couple stood before me, penniless, their only son behind bars. In an instant, it was as if decades had been carved into their faces. Their hair was gray, their skin lined with the deep wrinkles of hardship, and they looked utterly pitiful. But I remained unmoved, my face cold and expressionless.Because I remembered the last life—when I had been wrongfully imprisoned, my parents had been forced to kneel before Russell's family, pleading and begging."Russell, in-laws, Melissa is honest and upright! She would never embezzle company funds!""Russell, please don't misunderstand her! We beg you to testify for Melissa—she would never do anything illegal!""All of Melissa's and our property has been seized by the court, and Alicia is still Russell's daughter! Alicia is waiting in the hospital for surgery. Please, lend us some money for her operation. We swear we'll repay you a hundredfold, we'll work like slaves for you forever!"My parents had tears streaming down their fa

Even at this point, Russell still tried to argue his way out.I let out a cold laugh."Whether the recording is fabricated or not, the police will have it examined. Do you really think you can escape the law's punishment?"He shuddered, mouth opening as he pleaded again."Honey, listen to me… let me explain…"At that moment, Kristen's husband rushed in, seething with fury. He hurled the paternity test results at Russell and Kristen.Lifting his foot, he kicked Russell viciously as he lay on the ground."You shameless bastard! You slept with my wife and had me raising your son for two years like a fool. I'll beat you to death!"After leaving Russell bruised and battered, Kristen's husband turned and slapped her hard—twice."You cuckolded me, you shameless slut. I'm reporting you!"He then pulled out a thick stack of bank statements and handed them to the police."These are abnormal transaction records from several of Kristen's bank cards over the past six months. I hope they'

I let out a scornful laugh."What did you think? With multiple charges added together, do you really believe you'll have any chance of leaving prison in this lifetime?"Kristen's expression shifted like dye spreading through water, her face a battleground of turmoil.I sneered inwardly. I didn't mind giving her a little push.Leaning close to her ear, I whispered softly, "Kristen, that scumbag Russell could abandon his own daughter, whom he raised for six years. What makes you think he'll treat your illegitimate child any better?"You know what men are like. Believe me—once you're behind bars, he'll cast aside that child without hesitation and cut all ties with you, just so he can beg for my forgiveness."I curved my lips into a faint smile."Are you really willing to shoulder all the blame for a man so ruthless he'd abandon his wife and child?"Her whole body trembled. Suddenly, she gritted her teeth, glared at Russell, and shouted, "It's Russell who's lying! He found out by c

Contempt and disgust fell upon Russell and Kristen like a thousand piercing needles.Kristen's face was ashen, her lips trembling as she said, "Noel is my child with my husband. He's not illegitimate. Don't spread lies that will ruin my son's reputation!"Russell, tears and snot streaming down his face, clung to the hem of my pants. "Honey, you've really misunderstood me. I didn't cheat. I don't have an illegitimate child!"So they understood how humiliating this was. That only made me want to humiliate them further.I pulled up the company's employee family contact list and dialed Kristen's husband."Take your son Noel for a paternity test. There are truths you deserve to know.""No! Don't go! You mustn't!" Kristen's eyes widened in terror. She screamed and struggled desperately against her handcuffs, only to have the officers pin her shoulders down.Russell lunged at me viciously, trying to snatch my phone.I sidestepped him and struck him hard across the face."When you be

Kristen's face turned completely pale. She trembled so violently she could barely remain standing.Seeing her panic-stricken state, what was there left for anyone not to understand?"So it was Kristen all along. She's incredibly calculating!""I was wondering why she suddenly became so proactive—coming to the company first thing in the morning to report Melissa. Turns out she staged the whole thing herself!""Officer, hurry up and take this greedy disgrace away!"Amid Kristen's terrified expression, the officers stepped forward, ready to take her into custody."Wait. She has an accomplice."I pointed at Russell, who was standing in the corner with his head lowered, trying to distance himself from Kristen."Russell conspired with Kristen to transfer the 800 thousand dollars out of my account and frame me. He personally transferred the money from my card into Kristen's account. You should take him in for questioning as well.""No! I didn't!"His legs gave way in fright. He craw
