In the middle of the night, a call from Linda woke me up.
"Luna Ella..." Linda said cautiously. "Noah... had an allergic reaction. He broke out in a rash all over. It must have been Chloe's cake. The pack doctor just finished treating him..."
Noah was prone to allergies, so I always personally checked his food.
"How is he now?" My fingers tightened around the phone.
"The rash went down, and he just fell asleep. Alpha Damien was asking where the medicine cabinet is..."
"The medicine cabinet is the second door on the right in the nursery. The passcode is Lily and Noah's birthday," I said. "The blue label on the left side of the second shelf is specifically for mild wolfsbane allergies."
I hung up and stared at the ceiling, letting out a sigh. "Damien will handle it."
Then, I forced myself to go back to sleep.
At 7:03 in the morning, the phone rang again. It was Linda.
Lily was still asleep in my arms, her little face rubbing against my chest.
I gently moved her hand away from my collar and answered it.
"Luna Ella..." Linda sounded even more panicked than before. "Alpha Damien wants Scotch eggs. I don't know how to make them. Could you teach me?"
Scotch eggs.
Damien liked the outside golden and crispy, the meat wrapped tightly, and the yolk just set but not completely hard.
He hated runny yolks but thought fully cooked ones were too dry, so I always had to get the oil temperature and timing exactly right. And I had to sneak some crushed rosemary into the meat mix without him knowing.
He thought he hated rosemary, but the one time I didn't add it, he only took one bite.
"I'll text you the steps."
"Okay, okay, thank you, Luna..." Linda hesitated, carefully adding, "Luna Ella, when are you coming back to the packhouse? Noah was crying all night..."
My fingers gripped the blanket. "Linda, I'm not coming back."
The other end of the line went dead silent.
"Don't call me about packhouse stuff anymore. I'll put together a list of Noah's allergies and his medications and send it to you."
"Luna..."
I hung up.
The screen went dark, reflecting my own face. I had dark circles under my eyes. I hadn't slept well at all.
Lily rolled over beside me, mumbling in her sleep, "Mommy... don't answer the phone..."
I flipped my phone face down on the nightstand, lay back down, and pulled her into my arms.
She was warm, like a little heater.
I closed my eyes.
The last thing that flashed through my mind was the dining table at the packhouse.
Every day, I used to get up at five in the morning to make breakfast for everyone and even prep their toiletries.
Seven years. Over 2,500 days.
And no one ever said "thank you."
"Then I'm done doing it."
Lily's little hand reached out and grabbed my collar again.
I soothed her and let her sleep a bit longer.
I got up and emailed all the elders, telling them I had an important matter and inviting them to the council hall at 3 PM to bear witness. I also sent it to the old lady, Margaret.
Margaret replied instantly, "What the hell are you playing at?"
I didn't answer. I just sat in the living room at Cedarhill Residences, putting together the notes for Linda.
A while later, my phone buzzed again.
It was from Damien: "Suit yourself. Don't waste the elders' time."
I stared at those words for a long time.
Yeah. I wasn't worth it. I wasn't worth his time, and I wasn't worth the elders' time either.
My wolf whimpered. I realized that after all the pain, there was nothing left inside but a wasteland.
I put the phone down.
On the desk was a drawing Lily had done last night. It showed two people holding hands next to a crooked house, with a giant sun on the roof.
Noah wasn't in it, and neither was her dad.
Lily had said, "Mommy, this is me, this is you, and this is our new home!"
I picked up the drawing and stuck it to the fridge door with a magnet.
I turned to look at the full-length mirror by the entryway. The face staring back at me was still beautiful, maybe even more mature and poised than seven years ago.
But when did the light in those eyes go out?
I stared at myself for a long time, suddenly realizing that it wasn't gone. It was just buried so deep that even I had almost forgotten about it.
My eyes dropped to the silver band on my wrist.
Seven years ago, the pack doctor said my wolf form was "abnormal and unstable." Margaret was worried that at pack gatherings, with so many alphas around, I wouldn't be able to stop my tail from popping out. She said it would "disgrace the Blackwood name." Damien had stayed completely silent, not saying a word to defend me.
So, I let them seal it.
That silver band had clamped my wrist for seven years, wearing a faint ring into my skin. Engraved on the inside were the words, "Silence is glory." I used to treat that as a virtue, as my duty as a wife.
Keep my mouth shut, keep my head down, endure, and sacrifice. I thought that was glory.
But you can't earn glory on your knees. You have to stand up and earn it the right way.
When I said "I'm not coming back" earlier, I felt more sure of myself than ever before.
My eyes darkened as I gently slipped the band off my wrist.
Instantly, my wrist felt light, like a boulder I'd carried for seven years had finally dropped.
Then, I felt something waking up inside me. It was my wolf.
A she-wolf who had been hiding in the dark for way too long finally opened her golden eyes.
An aura suppressed for seven years seeped from my bones. It was crisp and sharp, like the first frost of winter. The woman in the mirror changed. Not her looks, but the cloudy, submissive vibe around her face was gone, revealing eyes that were calm and resolute.
I took a deep breath and looked at myself again.
This time, I didn't see "the alpha's luna." I didn't see "the lady of the packhouse" or "someone's property."
I just saw me. Ella.
My wolf let out a low rumble in my chest, as if saying, "I'm back."
Ella's POVLily walked to the front of the stage holding her moon lighthouse. She was much taller and far more solidly built than the other pups her age.Down in the audience, some parents snickered and whispered."Alpha Damien's daughter... she's so big. Built like a male wolf, isn't she?""You call that just 'a little chubby'?"I shot those parents a cold glare and released a sharp burst of my aura, shoving it toward them as a warning.Lily's clear, childish voice echoed through the auditorium over the microphone."This is the moon lighthouse I made with my mommy."Just as she finished her sentence, I saw her expression shift slightly. The teleprompter in the control booth had gone black.Every student had prepared a long speech for their presentation. It's hard for a five-year-old to memorize a whole speech, so the teachers had loaded them onto the teleprompter ahead of time.Near the teleprompter, an elegantly dressed middle-aged she-wolf was walking toward me. The heavy, solemn l
Ella's POVNoah panicked, shaking his head frantically."No! You can't take it out!""Take it out!" Chloe hissed, keeping her voice low. "I went through a lot of trouble to get you this fortress. If you act like this, you're going to embarrass your dad!"Noah just threw himself onto the cardboard box, refusing to let her touch it.Chloe tried to pull him away, but he clung to the box for dear life.As the two of them wrestled on stage, Damien's brows knit together. The entire auditorium stared in shock. Then, with a loud rip, Chloe tore the box open. A pile of shredded paper scraps spilled out, rolling right off the edge of the stage. The auditorium went dead silent for a second, and then a massive roar of laughter erupted.Noah slumped onto the floor, staring blankly at the messy trash scattered everywhere. The teacher marched onto the stage, her face livid."Noah, you didn't do the craft project at all, did you?""No! I did!" Noah's little lip quivered. "I thought..."He couldn't fi
Ella's POVLily glared at Noah, her little fists clenched tight."Mommy used to stay up all night doing your projects for you!""So what!" Noah stuck his neck out stubbornly. "Mommy's stuff doesn't look as good as Chloe's! I'm definitely going to win first place this time!"I watched Lily's little shoulders shake with anger. I crouched down, fixed her collar, and whispered in her ear."Don't fight with him. Your lighthouse shines, and his fortress doesn't."Lily nodded, half-understanding. She took my hand, and we walked right past Noah.Once inside the school yard, a teacher guided Lily to her classroom, while I headed to the auditorium to wait. For this craft project, the teachers had invited every kid to the auditorium stage to share the inspiration and ideas behind their work.Moonridge Academy always went all out for events. Today, there were even cameras set up in the back of the auditorium. A local children's TV channel was here to record the presentations.I found a seat near
Ella's POV"You!"She glared at me, but remembering Damien was sitting right next to her, she quickly slapped on a fake smile.Damien lowered his voice. He sounded like he was trying to compromise, acting like he was doing me a huge favor."Ella, if you've been tired lately, take my credit card and go to Europe to clear your head. The pack alphas over there are good friends of mine. I'll have them take good care of you. When you've had your fun, come back."For seven years, this was how he forced me to cave every single time. But this time, I was done.I looked down."Damien, do you still not get it? My wolf doesn't love you anymore. After you broke my heart time and time again, our mating bond is practically hanging by a thread."Damien laughed. It was the biggest smile he'd given me in our seven years of being mated."Fine." He grabbed a pen, scribbled his name on the agreement, and tossed it to me. "As you wish."But paperwork wasn't enough.A werewolf's rejection was never somethi
Ella's POVI thought I could just take Lily's hand and walk right out, but Chloe was soaking up the look of defeat she thought I had on my face. She wasn't done being cruel."Ella, don't be like this." She held up the box again. The fake necklace gave off a cheap shine under the light."Damien already compromised, just take it."Damien leaned back on the couch and looked away.I knew that look too well. To him, I was just a pet dog. Anytime the master curled his finger, I was supposed to wag my tail and run over happily.I reached out and took the necklace.A smug gleam danced in Chloe's eyes. She had probably already pictured me foolishly wearing the fake, stepping outside only to be treated like a walking joke.I used one finger to gently hook the necklace around Chloe's neck, holding the two side by side."The sapphire on your necklace is shinier. I really like it. How about we trade?"She froze on the spot. She didn't expect me to tell the real from the fake at a glance. She panic
Ella's POV"I caught your scent." He didn't deny it. The corners of his mouth tipped up, that faint dimple showing again."A scent this forest hasn't seen in seven years. The aura of a golden-eyed wolf is pretty hard to ignore."He took two steps forward, pulled a gold-embossed business card from the inner pocket of his suit, and handed it to me."About the rejection. If those old guys in the council try to give you a hard time, you'll need an attorney who knows the old laws and isn't afraid of Damien.""Everyone in the werewolf world knows Nathan Locke is a top-tier lawyer," I said, ignoring the card. "I can't afford your sky-high rates right now.""I won't charge you."I raised an eyebrow."Remember my grandfather, James?" he asked. "You were the student he was most proud of back at the academy. His health hasn't been great the last couple of years, and he talks about you all the time."James. That name was like a key, unlocking memories I had buried for seven years. He was the top
