The airport felt colder that morning. Perhaps it was the air-conditioning or perhaps it was the weight of all Ava had left behind in her wake. She sat quietly beside Ethan, clutching her sweater to her chest like a shield against the world outside her. Families dragged suitcases across the floor, business travelers talked loudly into phones, and children ran around in excited circles. Everyone had somewhere to be.Everyone but her.Ethan glanced over at her, his eyes warm but observant. “You look like you’re about to run away again,” he said gently.Ava let out a breath that felt too heavy. “I’m not running. I’m just… recalculating.”"Recalculating," he repeated with a small smile. "Sounds official. Like a GPS error."She laughed low, the first real laugh of the day. “Maybe my whole life is a GPS error.”He cocked his head. “And where were you supposed to end up?”She hesitated. The truth felt too fragile to say out loud, but Ethan’s voice was so steady and patient, it actually made i

San Francisco shimmered under the afternoon sun, golden and hazy through the slight coastal fog. Ava walked briskly along the streets near the café she now called her temporary workplace, the tote bag swinging against her hip. She still couldn't quite believe she had landed a job at Harbor Light Books-a cozy, sun-drenched space that smelled of coffee, old paper, and something she didn't know how to name: possibility. It had been two weeks since she'd come to the city, and already life seemed different. Brighter. More open. And more complicated.Ethan had called every day: to check in after her first, to text and ask how she was settling in, to offer to meet for a casual dinner. Ava had been hesitant, uneasy with the speed of their budding intimacy, but there was something in him—his patience, his gentle persistence, the quiet warmth in his eyes—that made her feel safe. For the first time in years, she didn’t feel like she was walking through life alone.Today, they had agreed to meet

The evening sky was canvas wide and golden as Ava and Ethan strolled along the shore, the sand cooling their feet while the ocean's sigh was the sound in the distance. This was days after photos of them together made headline in gossip magazines; 'Tech Billionaire Seen With Mystery Lady', attracting the prying eyes of his ex girlfriend, Serena. The sun at the beach was holding steady in the sky as if just for them.“Are you sure you want to walk?” Ava asked, slipping off her sandals and feeling the sand wash between her toes.Ethan smiled. “You always ask that.”“Because last time you complained about the sand getting everywhere.”“I complained because you laughed at me.”Ava laughed again, a light and liberated sound. “I will always laugh at you.”“That’s unfair“You love it.”He shook his head, chuckling. “Maybe I do.”They walked in comfortable silence for a few moments, the sound of the waves filling the spots where conversation wasn't required."Do you come here often?" asked Ava

The rain came quietly that night. It didn’t storm or rage against the windows. It simply fell—steady, persistent, like it had all the time in the world. Ava stood by the glass wall of Ethan’s apartment, watching droplets race each other down, blurring the city lights beyond.Behind her, Ethan moved through the apartment with uncharacteristic restlessness. She could sense it without looking—the way his footsteps paused, resumed, paused again. The weight of unspoken words pressed heavily between them.“You’ve been quiet,” he said at last.Ava nodded slowly. “I’m thinking.”“About Serena.”“Yes.” She turned to face him. “And about us.”Ethan exhaled and ran a hand through his hair. “Then we should talk.”They sat across from each other on the couch, knees almost touching. The distance felt deliberate, fragile—like a bridge that could collapse if either of them moved too fast.“I should’ve told you earlier,” Ethan began. “Not when she decided to insert herself into our lives.”Ava didn’t

Ava’s apartment smelled faintly of vanilla and freshly baked bread. She’d spent the morning experimenting with a simple banana bread recipe, humming softly as she worked. The small kitchen had become her sanctuary, a quiet corner of the city where she could breathe without the constant weight of expectations pressing down. The living room was cluttered in the most endearing way: notebooks stacked neatly on the side table, a sketch of the bay sunset pinned above the couch, and the soft glow of a table lamp spilling over a well-worn armchair. For the first time in weeks, Ava felt a sense of normalcy. A sense of control. Her phone buzzed on the counter, dragging her out of her reverie. She glanced at the screen and felt her pulse quicken.Ethan: Hey… can I stop by? Just to see how you’re settling in?Ava exhaled slowly, trying to steady herself. She had insisted on creating distance, but the thought of seeing him made her chest ache. She typed carefully:Ava: I’m… busy. Maybe another tim
