Chapter 1

I was kidnapped by one of my father's enemies. The abductor called Dad, who was a police officer, and growled into the phone, "Mr. Carter, your daughter is with me. If you want her alive, you have to come here yourself. Otherwise, I'll cut her into pieces."A cold blade touched my throat, making a chill run through me. Dad's voice came through the receiver, steady and irritated. "Playing the kidnapping trick again, huh, Edith? You're absolutely hopeless.""I'm not lying! I swear I'm not!" My voice cracked as I begged, "He really will kill me!""Then why don't you just die?" As he cursed me, my breath faltered. "Dad," I choked out, "I'm only 18. I don't want to die. Please…. please save me."Yet Dad hung up. I stared blankly, listening to the busy tone as tears slid down my cheeks, colder than the knife at my throat. The abductor cursed, redialed, and barked, "William Carter! You really don't care if I kill her?""Go ahead and kill her!" Dad snapped, his voice dripping w

Chapter 2

Dad had never cared about me, not even once in my entire life. If he had, how could he have let me die the way I did, with my body destroyed beyond recognition? Still, I was curious what expression he would make when he saw the so-called gift. The door opened. Helen stepped outside cheerfully and walked back in with the gift box.A moment later, screams and furious shouting erupted inside the house.I drifted through the doorway and saw the overturned box on the floor and my heart rolling across the floor.Dad was shaking with rage as he grabbed his phone and sent a voice message."Edith, are you insane? It's Helen's birthday. Not only did you refuse to come home to celebrate it, but you even sent something so disgusting to scare her. I should have killed you when you were born. You're such a monster!"I lowered my head and floated over my heart. Crouching above it, I touched it lightly. My translucent fingers passed right through the dark, bloodied flesh. There was no warmth

Chapter 3

I was only a wandering soul now and couldn't feel sorrow. Yet when I wiped at my face, something strange happened. Tears slid down my cheeks. Why could a soul cry?A ringtone sounded from inside the house. I turned toward Dad as he frowned and answered the call.Perhaps souls could hear too well, because I caught every word from the other end of the line.It was a young woman, Beatrice Nolan—my best friend."Mr. Carter, Edith is missing. I can't reach her no matter what I try. Could you please help me look for her?""Don't play the same trick twice," Dad said, forcing his temper down, though his tone was cold."Beatrice, for your father's sake, I won't hold this against you. But you'd better stop being friends with someone like Edith. And don't contact me about anything involving her."He hung up while she was still speaking, refusing to listen, just as he had always refused to listen to me.I drifted in front of him, staring at the expression of pure disgust on his face. How

Chapter 4

I stopped listening. I already knew that the body wasn't mine. I had been killed just the night before, and the abductor had butchered my corpse and thrown the pieces into the river to feed the fish. The only part left was my heart, the one Dad had kicked away like trash. What I didn't understand was why Dad sounded so strictly professional. In his eyes, was I really no different from any other victim? When he learned the corpse wasn't mine, didn't he feel the slightest bit relieved? When he learned I was missing, wasn't he afraid? When I was five, he once took me to his workplace. I was always quiet and never fussed or cried as I sat off to the side with my toys. His eyes had softened when he looked at me then. "Edith, sweetheart, are you bored?"I smiled brightly at him. "Not at all. I love being with you while you work."His colleagues teased him enviously."Mr. Carter, you're lucky. She's such a sweet little girl.""Edith is so adorable. I wish I had a daughter like her.

Chapter 5

Something about those words felt wrong, and I told Dad everything that very day.But instead of believing me, he accused me of lying, saying I had already learned to deceive people at such a young age.Agnes cried beside him. "I've treated Edith so well. How could she smear my name like this? Edith, is it because I didn't give you chocolate today? But chocolate is bad for children's teeth…"She wept as if she were the victim. In my panic and frustration, tears sprang from my eyes. Yet Dad held her tenderly and pushed me into the closet."Get in there and think about what you've done."From that day on, Agnes changed. She acted even gentler toward me whenever Dad was present, but the moment he left the house, she hit me, screamed at me, and called me names.I went crying to Dad and tried to tell him. Every time, Agnes cried louder and threatened to divorce him. She even threatened to get rid of the child in her belly. Not long after, Dad sent me to a boarding school. From then on

Chapter 6

"William, go look for Edith, would you? No matter what she's done, she's still your daughter," Agnes said."I already told you that I don't blame her for pushing me back then. I'm still alive, aren't I? Our daughter only ended up with a few scars. She's fine. Just forgive Edith."Her soft "persuasion" was like a switch. Once it had been flipped, his resolve hardened again. He said into the phone, his voice icy, "She's 18. Whether she lives or dies has nothing to do with me. If she really is dead, it only proves how deep her sins run."Hearing him speak with such certainty, Ms. Parker finally ended the call. I felt a strange heaviness weighing me down. I shouldn't have felt anything. After all, my heart had been carved out. How could an empty body feel pain?Agnes sighed against Dad's chest. "I told you to spend a little time with Edith that day. She's never liked Helen. She must have felt out when she saw Helen celebrate her birthday with you. If her mother knew she was upset, s

Chapter 7

"Shut up!" Dad slammed his palm against the table, his face twisting."Oh right," the abductor said, leaning forward without a trace of fear. His eyes locked onto Dad's, and a cold laugh slid out of him. "Do you know what your daughter said before she died?"I saw Dad's eyelid twitch."She said, 'Dad, why don't you ever believe me?'"The man's laughter grew wild, filling the interrogation room with that warped, icy sound. Dad's jaw clenched, the muscles in his face twitching as he forced out each word. "Did you really kill her?""Of course," the man said, his eyes bloodshot with a kind of sick pleasure. "I called you. I warned you, but you didn't believe me. And I did exactly what you told me. You said to carve her up and destroy her however I like, so I did. I made sure to fulfill your wish."The cramped, dim room fell quiet all of a sudden. It was the kind of silence that settled over the place right before death.Dad's expression shifted from fury to numbness, then finally
