Chapter 1

"You're free to go, but first, you need to erase every contact related to our business partners and family members from your phone. Those are the family's assets, and you've got no right to take them with you."No sooner had I walked out of the office than Rosa Lombardi, my husband's darling, blocked my path.Years of running the family business taught me there was no such policy. She was gunning for me.I spun around to face my husband, the formidable Don Sebastian Ricci. "Is this what you want as well?"Sebastian's eyes were ice as he looked at me, his voice just as frigid. "Yes."Deleting those contacts would devastate the family business, possibly knocking us off our pedestal among the elite Italor families. He thought he had me pegged, sure I would never leave for real, not when it meant letting the family take a hit.We were five years into our marriage, a union that weathered enough storms to delay any thoughts of children. He knew how I felt about the family; it was lik

"As for leaving the company, there'll be compensation. Go home, take it easy, maybe a little vacation. In 10 days, I promise you'll have an answer you're happy with."He thought he played the amnesia card close to his chest, planning to use it in 10 days to silence me, offer an apology, bend a little, and we would be back to square one. However, in 9 days, his antics were about to blow a 5 billion deal with the Romano family right out of the water.I had the contract nearly in the bag, just one final step to go. That signature in 9 days would shape the Ricci family's future for decades, potentially crowning us the top mafia family of Italor's underworld.A breach meant more than just coughing up a fortune in penalties; it put us on the brink of ruin.Once, for the family's sake and my steadfast love for him, I would have put his interests first, braving every danger and heartache alone. However, this time, it was not just exhaustion I felt, it was a deep, piercing cold.I was do

The love I thought we had was a joke.It made sense then why he hoarded all the money and power as soon as our family business picked up, never letting me get close. He was guarding against me all along.Lost in the past, Sebastian stood and clapped me on the shoulder, "Anything coming back to you?"I shook my head, playing dumb, "Nope, maybe you knocked something loose when you took that dive. Got your wires crossed."Sebastian's grin froze, awkward as hell. Despite his brown-nosing, I was not biting, and his face clouded over.He grabbed Rosa's hand, stroking it, "Yeah, I must be mixed up. Rosa's my wife."After we wrap up this divorce, I'm putting a ring on it."He walked her down the church aisle, and to any Joe Blow, it looked like they were the ones tying the knot.I had no interest in playing their games, so I just walked right in.Sebastian wrapped his arms around Rosa, pulling her onto his lap and teasing her with a piece of chocolate he fished out of his pocket.I c

Rosa scoffed, her face twisted with scorn. "What's the big deal? It's just an arms trade. We don't need her. I can handle it just fine on my own."The capos' voices were tinged with panic once more: "This is madness. The Romano have always done business with people, not their last names. You're just fooling yourself."Where's Don? Hurry, we need to find Don!"Then Rosa's voice, laced with anxiety, echoed again. "Don's got a headache and is resting. You're ignoring his illness, burdening him with family troubles. I swear, I'll throw you all out of the family if you don't stop."The line went dead with a buzz.I knew how this would end. If I, the Don's wife who weathered storms of violence, could be ousted by Don and his mistress, what chance would they have? They were powerless, forced to bite their tongues.I could not help but laugh, a deep joy bubbling up, bringing with it a lightness I had never felt before. I was done with the family business. So, I found myself on a plane

Chapter 5

"The Ricci family thinking of backing out? Where's Elena?"You think you can send some nobody to close a billion-dollar arms deal?"I've only ever dealt with Elena. You're pulling a fast one on me!"A family that doesn't keep its word might as well not exist."Sebastian was left reeling from a tongue-lashing by the Romano family's underboss. As he snapped back to reality, ready to make his case, the line went dead.I used to handle all the dealings with the Romano family, while he never lifted a finger. Then, after singing Rosa's praises, he landed us in hot water and could not help but grill her. "What the heck happened? I thought you had it all under control?"Rosa looked just as sour, fuming as she vented: "Those idiots! We had the arms deal in the bag. It was supposed to be a simple contract signing. Why does it have to be Elena who goes?"It's just an arms deal. If it falls through, so be it."Sebastian's face turned stormy, his anger palpable. "Just an arms deal? We're

I put up my hand, stopping him dead in his tracks. "I'm out of the family business, Sebastian. I don't have a say in it anymore."Sebastian's face soured, but he quickly tried to recover. "It was all supposed to be in good fun, but Rosa crossed a line that day. Rosa, just say you're sorry to Elena, and we'll call it even."Rosa bristled at the idea. "Why should I apologize if I didn't do anything wrong?"She stood her ground, defiant.Sebastian's voice was icy as he reminded her, "Remember whose footing your bills, Rosa. If our family business tanks, it's bad news for you too. Still want to cruise around in your Porsche?"Cornered by the mention of her prized car, Rosa grudgingly muttered an apology to me. "Sorry, okay? Happy now?"Sebastian sure knew how to play the generous card, even splurging on a sports car for her.I could not help but scoff.Mistaking my scoff for a sign of forgiveness, Sebastian reached for me, but we were interrupted by another bridesmaid rushing over.

Chapter 7

The family was in deep trouble, the likes of which we had never seen before. The Romano were on the warpath, coming at him full tilt.It was not just Sebastian who was feeling the heat, the company's elders were restless too.In the hotel lobby, Sebastian cornered me, gift in hand, with the family's elders in tow, all trying to win me over. The elder took my hand, his voice earnest. "Look, it's normal for couples to have their tiffs. They say a spat between husband and wife is short-lived, right? Don knows he messed up. Forgive him, will you?"Our family business is in a real bind, and you're the only one who can sort it out completely."Besides, you don't want to see the company you built from scratch just vanish, do you?"I looked at the family members who once dodged bullets with me, then all begged me for help, and I could not help but ask, "You all know Sebastian's 'amnesia' is just an act, right?"They all went quiet at my question.Their eyes told me everything, there w
