Elowen hadn’t laughed like that in a long time. It came unexpectedly, spilling out of her in short bursts as she sat cross-legged on the bed, Lysara beside her, both of them leaning into each other like they had nothing to worry about. For a few minutes, everything they experienced in the Manor, the Oracle, with the brothers, the prophecy—all of it faded into something distant and unimportant. Lysara was in the middle of recounting some ridiculous thing one of the maids had said earlier, exaggerating the voice so badly that Elowen snorted. “You’re lying,” Elowen said, shaking her head. “I swear I’m not,” Lysara insisted, clutching her arm. “She said it exactly like that.” “You’re horrible,” Elowen muttered, but she was smiling.
