Chapter 1

"Are you for real, Rachel? It's your big day. Come on, stop with the act. You're scaring me."I forced a tentative laugh. I went in closer to Rachel, placing my hand on her arm, trying to end this very realistic joke with a casual touch.Rachel instantly stepped back, keeping her distance. "Who's joking around? I'm not. Get lost right now, or I'm calling security."My hand stiffened mid-air. My mind went blank as I desperately replayed what I might have done wrong.Even when Rachel picked her phone up to call security, I was still trying to wrap my head around what happened. I could barely breathe.I asked her, "Have I done something wrong? Or is there some custom here that I don't know about and have offended you? I'll apologize. Don't get angry, please."Rachel had married far away, more than 800 kilometers from our city. It was only normal that there were some customs that I did not understand.Clinging to that possibility like a lifeline, I looked at her sincerely."Please,

Chapter 2

"You've got some nerve calling me! Just Rachel's luck to have a ratty friend like you! Just get lost!" Daniel snapped. His words jolted me like an electric shock. Somehow, I understood what was happening.Carrying the gifts that Rachel gave me the day before, I slipped past security and headed back to Rachel's room.Ignoring the contempt on her face, I said, "Do you think I'm materialistic? That I accept all your gifts for the money? I'll return it all to you. I just want you as a friend."The day before, when she showered me with the gifts, I had found it all too extravagant to accept them. I refused once, but Rachel said that I would not be a very good friend if I turned down her gifts.Perhaps she was testing me at the time.Rachel looked at the gifts in disgust, as if they were all trash. Then, she looked at me, saying, "These are nothing to me. I'll say it once more: get lost. Otherwise, I'll call the cops and sue you for trespassing. My husband-to-be is powerful and rich, n

Chapter 3

Barbara pointed at me, her face twisted with anger."You! Get lost at once! You're fired!"I was dumbfounded. This was all too similar to the scene that happened yesterday."Why?" I asked, puzzled. "Did something happen to the project?"Barbara shook her head. "The project is going well.""Is it because I took a few days off?""George approved your leave. It followed company policy.""Then why are you firing me? I did nothing wrong.""Lindsay Shields, I'm the boss. If I say you're fired, you're fired. Go to HR and collect your compensation, then leave my company in five minutes."Barbara dropped back in her chair, heaving with anger. She was usually a kind woman, always treating everyone in the company like her children. She was motherly and gentle. Even if someone had made a mistake, as long as it was not detrimental, she would always give them a chance to correct it.I had not made a mistake at all. Besides, my performance had consistently ranked first in the company. She

Chapter 4

Zach was always mature and composed. Talking to him always calmed me.I felt somewhat better already.I was concentrating on selecting a private room at the club on my phone, so I could properly spend time with Zach later.Just then, my chat was being bombarded with messages from our common friends."Lindsay, see you tonight! Don't be sad! It'll make Zach sad, too.""We'll have fun! We'll drink all our worries away!""Lindsay, you're such a capable woman! Being fired is the company's loss! Don't worry! You'll shine brightly anywhere."…All the comforting messages cheered me right up. I grabbed my things, hailed a taxi, and returned home. Then, I took a nap.Early in the evening, when I was about to head out, Sharon returned home.I held her hand and leaned on her shoulder, saying, "I got fired today.""What?" Sharon was baffled. "Things haven't been going your way recently. We should go to a fortune teller this weekend."I sighed and said to her playfully, "At least I sti

Chapter 5

I clenched my fists tightly and ran back to the private room in the club like a maniac.I was going to seek the justice I deserved.Inside, Sharon was sitting next to Zach, speaking on my behalf."You and Linsay have been together for so many years. You're on your way to getting hitched! You can't just break it off like that."My arrival attracted the attention of everyone there.Sharon stopped speaking and looked at me worriedly. "Are you alright? You don't seem well. Let's head back together."I raised my hand.Slap! Smacked her face squarely.A loud, crisp slap reverberated throughout the entire room.Everyone was bewildered.Zach stood up and yelled at me, "After you left, Sharon had been persuading me to reconcile with you. She has been so nice to you! How could you do that to her! Lindsay, how on earth did you turn out this way?"Sharon clutched her face and fluttered her eyelashes. "It's fine, it's fine. Lindsay's just very stressed recently with all the changes. Anyo

Chapter 6

"You texted Rachel yesterday, telling her that I had slept with a man very important to her. Her literal husband."Today, you chatted up Barbara and said the same thing–that I slept with a man she's very close to."An hour ago, you sent a message to Zach, telling him that I was having an affair."Sharon! Why are you doing this to me?!"Rachel cut ties with me because she thought I was having an affair with her husband. Barbara thought that I was with George, so she got me fired.I looked at Zach. "Why would you believe Sharon even without coming to ask me? Just because I smell of semen?"Zach's eyes widened. He said, "I didn't believe her at first. I just thought that someone was trying to come between us. But when I approached you, you really did reek of another man! You disgust me!"Zach took a deep breath, clenching his fists tightly. He added, "I didn't want to be so blunt. I wanted to leave you some dignity. Look at you! Since you know you smell like another man, why are y

Chapter 7

There were no surveillance cameras in the room. There was no evidence of me hitting Sharon. The people here were all my friends. They were all guilt-ridden for their misunderstanding of me."No one will stand up for you."Sharon looked around and asked tentatively, "Will none of you help me?"The answer was loud and clear.I turned to leave, ready to pack up and leave the rented place. I no longer wanted to live with Sharon.Zach chased after me. He held my hand and apologized, "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have believed others. All this is just because you're too beautiful, and I felt insecure. Let's get married, Lindsay. Please?"I still felt the pain of him throwing the bouquet at me. I shrugged his hand off. "Zach, you don't love me at all. I'm granting your wish. We're done."Zach kept up with me, looking sorry. "I love you!" He tried to touch my nose. "Why didn't you tell me you lost your sense of smell? I could help you with the treatment. I have a lot of doctor friends. Not o

Chapter 8

The doctor immediately entered the garden and, following my instructions, injected the compound into Sharon.Sharon thrashed. "What are you doing?! How dare you do that to me! You'll pay dearly for that!"The doctor didn't budge and continued injecting the compound into Sharon."Ah! Don't touch me!" No matter how Sharon resisted, the entire compound was injected into her.She could not stop sniffing herself. "What did you inject into me? I smell like Silvercrest Milkthorn.""Yes. It's exactly that. Didn't you make me a perfume bottle based on that flower? I guess you must really like it, so I'm returning the favor tenfold. The scent will linger in you forever.""Lindsay! You tramp! How could you do this to me?!"I cast Sharon a sharp gaze. She was so terrified that she fell quiet."I'd like to remind you that from this moment on, you're the tramp."With that, I turned to leave.Someone said from the door, "Sharon Christie, you're allowed to leave."Sharon ran as fast as she
