Maya's POV The morning came through the windows, grey light, the kind that didn't commit to sun, the kind that just filled the room and let you see the shapes of things without lighting them. Barnaby was by the window, his nose pressed to the glass, watching the street. He did that most mornings now. He had stopped following me from room to room and had started choosing his own places, the window in the morning, the radiator in the afternoon, his bed in the evening, the rug in the night when his hips woke him and he needed to stand. He was old. He moved slowly. He drank a lot of water. He still ate. He still wagged his tail when Léo came home. The tail wagging was slower than it used to be, but it was still wagging. Léo was at the stove. Coffee. He made coffee every morning, the same way, measured the grounds, poured the water, pressed the button. The coffee maker hissed and dripped.
