Chapter 1

"Let's just call off the wedding..."The pain shooting through my severed finger, combined with the blood loss, left my voice weak and hoarse.Even so, both Ashley Blake and Marc Tyson turned toward me instantly. The disdain in Ashley's eyes deepened."Are you playing hard to get again? Troy Clinton, I've seen all your little tricks before."Winning the international piano competition was not only Marc's dream; it had been mine too. More importantly, it was my mother's dying wish.Every second wasted here lowered the chances of reattaching my finger.Bitterness flooded my chest. I no longer had the strength to argue with her. I staggered forward, trying to pick up the severed finger lying in the pool of blood.Just as I was about to touch it, Marc rushed over and caught my wrist with an innocent look on his face. The severed finger, still wearing the engagement ring, ended up directly beneath his shoe.He looked at me guiltily, then raised the hand he had just purposely jamme

In my hazy state, I dreamed of the distant past. Before the black and white keys, Ashley and I sat side by side, playing a four-hand piece together. When the song ended, she took my hand gently and examined it with care. Admiration and love overflowed from her eyes."Troy, your hands are so beautiful. Promise you'll play the piano for me forever, okay?"The music came to a sudden halt before I could even respond. Her expression warped into something horrifying. Ignoring my desperate pleas, she raised a blade and chopped off my ring finger in one clean motion.I jolted awake in terror, sitting upright with wide eyes.A familiar scent lingered in the air.It was my room. Beside the bed sat a framed photo of Ashley and me wrapped in each other's arms intimately. As my mind gradually cleared, I immediately looked down at my right hand.Aside from the thick layers of bandages, the place where my ring finger should have been was empty. My heart sank. The very last shred of hope I

After that fight, Ashley didn't come home for seven full days. Not a single message from her ever lit up my phone. She never asked how I was doing.Still, I knew exactly where she was.Marc constantly updated me on everything the two of them did together.Ashley accompanied him to see the cherry blossoms. She even organized a private concert for him beneath the blooming trees. The two of them played the piano side by side in perfect harmony, looking every bit like a couple made for each other. In the live clips, voices could often be heard praising them as a match made in heaven.Ashley never denied it.Marc simply looked proudly into the camera with a satisfied smile.By the concert's finale, the two of them were locked in a passionate kiss onstage.Marc's attached message read, "Troy, this is just standard etiquette abroad. Please don't read too much into it. I only wanted to let you know that Ash and I are doing great, so you don't need to worry."Not long after, Ashley

"Nothing important. I was just telling them to cancel the release prep for my new composition," I said. She smiled faintly, then leaned down and pressed a kiss on my earlobe."On Marc's behalf, I thank you."I woke in the dead of night to the shrill sound of Ashley's phone. After ending the call, she left in a hurry.I stopped her. "Where are you going this late?""There's an emergency at the company," she said. What emergency could the company possibly have?Marc probably just couldn't sleep. She grabbed her car keys and headed for the door. I didn't expose her pathetic lie. Instead, I reminded her calmly, "Don't forget. We're visiting Mom tomorrow.""What's the rush? It's not like a dead person's going anywhere," she replied irritably. However, the moment she noticed the umbrella I was holding out to her, the anger on her face faded instantly."I... I'll be back soon. Wait for me by the roadside later. I'll come pick you up."After Ashley left, I lay awake tossing and tu

I flexed my tingling hand a few times, then slowly slipped the couple's bracelet off my wrist and threw it at Ashley's face.Mom had given it to us back when Ashley and I first started dating. It was a token of her blessing. She said the bracelet would keep us together forever. What had once been a beautiful wish now felt nothing but ironic."Troy!"Just as I turned to leave, Marc suddenly rushed forward and grabbed me."I'm sorry, Troy. It's all my fault. Everything is my fault, so don't blame Ash. "She loves you so much. Please don't let me come between you. If you can just forgive Ashley, I'll leave right away—I'll disappear from your lives…" Marc pleaded through tears. His eyes were rimmed in red, making him look every bit the victim. In the meantime, he pulled the same old trick, deliberately pressing on my wound.I yanked his hand off and grabbed him by the collar."Of course, it's your fault! You're so good at acting. You should've gone into acting instead of music.

Tears soaked through the paper. I wiped my face carelessly, set the agreement aside, and went back to packing.Heavy footsteps approached, and then the door was pushed open with a loud bang.I could feel the accusation rolling off Ashley before she even spoke. She paused for a moment, then said coldly, "What are you doing now? Are you trying to run away from home?"I ignored her and reached to close the suitcase, only for Ashley to step on it. The organ donation agreement was also underneath her heel."Move."The warning in my voice meant nothing to her."Are you done throwing a tantrum, Troy? If anything was going on between Marc and me, would you even still have a place by my side? I went to the bridal shop today to fulfill an old promise. That's all," she explained. "Are you really making this a big deal?""Get out!" I snapped.Anger and grievance finally shattered the last thread of restraint inside me. I shot to my feet and shoved her away hard."Ashley, we're over. I ha

"There's no reason to."My answer was curt and distant. I thought it would finally shut her up, but I had forgotten that Ashley had always been someone who had a self-centered view of the world."It shouldn't have turned out like this. None of this should've happened. Why didn't you tell me?"The truth was, I had wanted to tell her, but Mom stopped me. She was afraid that if Ashley knew, it would weigh down the love she had for me.Mom once said to me, "Troy, I want Ash to love you freely. I don't want my heart to become a chain around hers. You deserve the purest, cleanest love there is."Even after everything, I didn't regret Mom's choice.I deserved the purest kind of love. Love was either enough, or it wasn't. There was no in-between.Even if I had told her, it would only have added one more layer to this ruin—that I had traded kindness for a debt I expected her to repay.Ashley's sudden appearance had already ruined the quiet moment I wanted to spend with Mom.As I turned

After the wound on my hand had mostly healed, I went to work at an orphanage as a music teacher. The children there were incredibly sweet. No matter how casually I played, they always responded with the most sincere praise."Mr. Clinton, that was amazing! You're the best piano teacher ever—way better than that Petrova guy in our textbooks!"When they noticed my missing finger, they would say things like, "Mr. Clinton must've been too perfect, so fate got jealous and took one of his fingers away."Jealous?I smiled faintly.Maybe that was true.In reality, I wasn't half the pianist I used to be after losing a finger. However, the children never held back their praise. Little by little, they healed the wounds hidden inside my heart.Ashley had once showered me with praise too.She used to tell me how beautiful my hands were, how talented I was at the piano, how gentle and thoughtful I was. After Marc returned, everything was different. The cooking she once loved had somehow be

I let out a relieved laugh.Somehow, it was easier to accept that Marc envied me for being better than him than to admit I had lost to a woman.Still, even if he hadn't reminded me, I would have watched the competition anyway. That stage had always been my dream. As for the piece, it was better to have someone play it than to let it fade away unnoticed. When the competition began, Marc appeared completely at ease, as though first place was already his.He even made a point of showing the tattoo on the back of his neck to the cameras. What he didn't know was that it wasn't a sweet couple's tattoo. It was an extremely insulting phrase written in Eridian.Clearly, he had no idea what it actually meant.Whispers gradually spread through the audience. The moment the piece started, the judges' expressions darkened. It didn't take me long to understand why.He wasn't playing my composition. What he performed was actually a transposed version of the piece that made Petrova famous.

Ashley had no words left to defend herself with. All she could do was repeat over and over that she loved me. I only looked at her coldly, the same way she once looked at me.Then, she ripped open her shirt. My name was tattooed across her chest, right above the place where her heart beat beneath the skin. However, that heart wasn't hers. It was my mother's."Troy, do you still not believe that I love you?"I stared at the heart pulsing under her skin, and before I knew it, my hand drifted toward her chest, toward the heart that had once belonged to my mother.Just as my fingers were about to touch her, I stopped. At that moment, I wanted nothing more than to rip that heart out of her body, but I couldn't."Ashley, you're too childish, and your love is even more childish than you are. True love never stays on the surface."I lifted my right hand. It was whole, with all five fingers intact.Ashley's eyes widened in shock as she stared at my ring finger in disbelief. It was a
