Chapter 1 Ludicrous

A moment of silence later, the crowd erupted into mocking titters, and every cell in my body went numb."Why would you do this?"A cruel smile twisted Wendy's lips. "It's great, don't you think?"My eyes went red-rimmed as I tried to blink away the tears. It was our wedding day. It was supposed to be the happiest moment of my life, but Wendy had gone and slept with Joe. Then, she chose to announce it right at this moment. This wasn't revenge. This was humiliation. The scandalous video was suffocating me, throttling me. Wendy huddled closer, smiling. "Joe and I had a bet to see if you would cry or make a scene if you saw the photo." She wiped my tears away. "You cried first."She took her phone out. It was on a call. Joe answered nonchalantly, "Fine, you win. I'll learn that technique you sent. Hang in there tonight. Don't start crying."My mind was blank, and all I heard was the roar of my heart. Then, the hall's light bloomed, and the scandalous photo was gone, replaced by '

Chapter 2 The Traitor

"I'm not mad. It's our big day. You should smile more." She held my hand and blew on it. "Did that slap hurt your hand? I'll put something on it. Get some sleep tonight," she said, her voice gentle. She was acting as if her betrayal had never happened.I flung her hand away in disbelief, making her frown in displeasure. "I let you slap me. That should be enough."My tears came again, and I couldn't stop them. "When did you change? Where's the woman who loved me with all her heart?"Wendy didn't take my hand again. Instead, she sipped on her wine and slowly answered, "I've been more than generous with you, Ashton. You only came to me after you had your fun with Summer. You wanted something warm, something tender, and I gave all of that to you."You only have one kidney. I didn't complain about how you're used goods. Instead, all I did was cheat. Yet, that's all it takes to make you flip?"I froze for what felt like an eternity before I answered, "But I never half-assed our relation

Chapter 3 Cruel Woman

I sat on the flooded ground. The silhouettes on the window were entwined with each other, but soon that figure was also a blur.I dazedly thought I saw Wendy again, the one from three years ago. I was all but dead after experiencing my first betrayal. I said nothing, shed no tears, gave no smiles, and only spent my days staring emptily into the ceiling.Wendy did everything she could to cheer me up. She bought me flowers, but I didn't even look at them. She brought me to the beach to see the ocean, but I said nothing. She cooked for me, but I didn't even take a bite. Then, she went missing for the whole afternoon. When she came back, her face was covered in the Joker's makeup, and a big red nose hung from her actual nose. She tried to play some tricks to cheer me up. It was a clumsy performance. She scrambled to juggle the balls, only for them to fall off three times.Wendy was the Haltons' only heir and always kept up airs wherever she went. She was serious and intimidating, bu

Chapter 4 The Cruelty Continues

I looked away. A wave of exhaustion washed over me, flooding me. "You're a child, Wendy. Summer's a bigger adult than you'll ever be."What I said triggered her, causing Wendy to charge right into me and shove me back. I hadn't expected her to react so violently, so I didn't brace myself and crashed into the door. The pain made my vision swim. Her eyes narrowed, and she took half a step."Wendy…"Wendy opened her eyes, and her cruel smile turned into a bloodthirsty grin. "You're not going to divorce me, Ashton. No one's going to marry a man who's gone through two divorces. No one but me."Every word stabbed through my heart like a blade meant to kill. I clutched my spinning head and tried to leave, but her footsteps quickened. "You're not leaving!" She tossed Joe onto the bed and grabbed my hand. "Are you seeing Summer again?"My bones were groaning in pain, but she kept talking, "You know what she did. You were in the rain, begging her to come back, but she never did! She was fuc

Chapter 5 Apparent Death

Late-stage kidney cancer. Those words nearly seared themselves into Wendy's eyes. Then, she finally remembered that I was losing more and more weight lately. It was obvious that my health was slipping through my hands like sand from a sieve. She finally remembered how I would clutch my belly and grimace in pain. She thought it was all because I'd lost a kidney, but now she was forced to face another question. 'How long has he been hiding it?'Moments ago, she'd made me watch her getting in bed with another man and threatened me with my father's life just to wring more pain out of me.She cursed loudly and shoved Joe away. Wendy grabbed her dress and pulled it up her legs. Joe fell back onto the bed, stunned. "What are you doing?"Wendy didn't seem to hear him. She ran straight to her car and floored the pedal so she could get to the hospital as soon as possible.…The sign on the ER had dimmed by the time she arrived. She ran ahead and grabbed a nurse by her arm. "Where is Asht

Chapter 6 The Past

Wendy pulled her hair as hard as she could and slammed her head into the wall. Her bone nearly cracked, and her flesh split open. It was agonizing, excruciating, but it couldn't bring the dead back to life.I was the one Wendy loved most. She had loved me ever since we were kids. She was taken back to the days when she was 14, to the day I transferred into her school. Golden light from the sun spilled from my hair, and it caught the eyes of two girls, Wendy and Summer. The two fought for my heart for 12 years. When Wendy got the spot next to me in class, Summer would block the entrance and make sure she couldn't get in. The two of them started fighting, and it devolved into a brawl that caked their faces in nosebleed. The dean of students punished them by making them stand in the hallway for the whole afternoon.I snuck two bottles of water at them and told them to stop fighting. When I came in first place in our year, Summer spent the whole night going through exercises and ask

Chapter 7 Foolishness

I was already on the ground when she kicked the door down, the bottle of sleeping pills half empty. After I had my stomach pumped, I curled up like a pillbug from the searing pain. Wendy held my shoulders down, but I could feel her hands shaking.Eventually, I woke up, and that was the start of a new beginning. Wendy told herself the past was in the past now. She told herself I was pure and belonged only to her. Yet, she couldn't stand by while I suffered because of Summer. The idea of revenge simmered in her mind the entire night she kept vigil. She approached Joe to destroy his reputation, but she didn't move away when his lips came close. His warmth burned hotter than mine, and he was way more proactive than I was.Wendy closed her eyes, trying to fill her mind with my face. Still, her body's reaction told her a different tale—having sex with Joe was different than sleeping with me.Eventually, she began to find me plain, frustrating, and annoying. She'd forgotten that rainy n

Chapter 8 The Reckoning Comes

Wendy gave the heart to my father. The transplant was a success, but news of my death hit my family before they could thank her.My poor grandmother fainted right away. My brother, Bradley Irving, was Imperia's youngest Attorney General. He stood in the morgue for 10 long, silent minutes. All he had to say was, "She'll pay for this."My family made their move, and it was aggressive. They lodged a report regarding Halton Group's tax issues, and it was precise down to every single transaction. The document on the company was so detailed that even the auditor couldn't find fault with it.Then, the whole Internet saw the unedited video of Wendy's affair. It had ranked first place on the trending list for three whole days. Chapter 9 Apologies Are Useless

The news showed on my screen, and my finger stopped moving. I would love to laugh if I could, but well… I couldn't. The news of their unfortunate predicament only took me back to that fateful day in the hospital. I was in the ER, begging the doctor for a death certificate. The doctor knew Bradley. He stared at me for a long while before calling my brother. Bradley came in a rush, but he didn't say anything when he saw me.The silence dragged on and on before he finally asked, "You sure about this? I wanted you to study abroad, but you said Wendy was different. You said she could make you happy, but she's the same as Summer."I hung my head at his words, crying myself a river of tears. Wendy showed up eventually. I was on the operating table with a white cloth covering me from head to toe. I heard her smashing everything around her, screaming for the doctor to save me. I heard her crying her heart out like a child who had her most precious thing taken away. Not once did she pull
