Chapter 1

"So after all that planning, your ultimate goal is just to trick her into giving back the 500 thousand dollars your parents left her?" Jaiden Erickson frowned. He was a friend of my brother, Darnell Huff. When Darnell didn't deny it, Jaiden looked at him in absolute disbelief. "Your family gave her life, but failed to raise her. You were the one who screwed up and lost her in the first place, leaving her at the mercy of human traffickers for 15 years."Now that you finally found her, you're pushing her away again? Darnell, are you even human?""Shut up!" Darnell grabbed Jaiden by the collar, furious."Even if it was my fault back then, I saved her from those traffickers myself. We're even!"And my parents only told me to bring her back. They never said she had a permanent place in this family. Besides, I did give her the money. She's the one dumb enough to use it to save me. What was I supposed to do?"He shrugged, completely indifferent. He didn't show a shred of sympathy for m

Before I could finish reading, the screen flipped away, and I could no longer read the rest of the text. All I saw was Jaiden suppressing the sympathy in his eyes. His expression turned cold as he snatched the bag of money from my hand."You took too long to bring the cash. If you want to save your brother, jump in there."I looked where he was pointing and saw a murky, foul-smelling wastewater pit.In the past, this kind of suffering wouldn't have fazed me.During the years I was held by the traffickers, I had grown used to the beatings, the torture, the freezing water, and the bitter cold. But now, my late-stage stomach cancer had left me so incredibly weak that my body simply couldn't handle the strain. The slightest shock could make me vomit blood and pass out.Jaiden's face darkened further at my hesitation. He pulled a bloody, severed finger from his pocket and tossed it at my feet. "Do it, or your brother dies!"I stared at the finger and realized instantly that it was p

Chapter 3

Amber's words felt like a thorn driven straight into my heart, leaving me gasping for breath. But how could that be?15 years ago, when Darnell first learned I was missing, he had cried as if his entire world had ended. He had run through every street and alley, calling my name, searching for me without pause.Over and over, he had wept with regret, blaming himself for taking me out to buy cotton candy and leaving me behind to wait when he didn't have enough money.Back then, before the traffickers had taken me too far away, I saw Dad beat him until he couldn't stand. He had kneeled on the very spot where I vanished, his body racking with violent sobs.I had opened my mouth, desperate to scream his name and tell him I was right there, but the duct tape across my mouth muffled every sound.Later, as the traffickers moved me away, I looked through a crack in the car window and saw the entire street plastered with missing person flyers.Darnell had held my photo, asking every pass

Chapter 4

From the day I was diagnosed with late-stage stomach cancer, I was so terrified that I couldn't sleep a wink. I took my diagnosis straight to Darnell. But he didn't believe a single word.He just assumed that my years with the traffickers had corrupted my character, teaching me to fake illnesses and play the victim just to get money out of him. With a cold, dismissive sneer, he tore my diagnosis to shreds.Because I didn't have the money for painkillers, I ended up fainting from the agony. That was the first time I was hospitalized for critical gastric bleeding. The second time happened when Darnell wasn't home. Amber brought over a bunch of her friends. Determined to drive me out of the house, they teamed up and forced alcohol down my throat. The harsh liquor severely irritated my stomach lining, and once again, I found myself knocking on death's door. After that incident, I told Darnell everything, but he blindly defended Amber."Amber is kind-hearted. She would never do som

Chapter 5

[Third-Person POV]A deafening buzz rang in Darnell's ears, and his legs gave out beneath him. That bathroom was the exact one where he had locked Erin inside. It felt as though an invisible hand had clamped down on his heart, squeezing the life out of it.It took him what felt like an eternity to gather the courage to stumble forward. "I'm… her family… I… Erin…"All the calm, commanding presence he usually held vanished, replaced by sheer panic and helplessness. He was completely incoherent. The surrounding doctors and nurses exchanged uneasy glances. They stared at the shattered man before them in utter surprise.Everyone recognized him. This was Darnell Huff, the prominent heir of the wealthy Huff family in Jindale. Years ago, the Huffs had poured countless resources and a fortune into searching for their biological daughter, who had been missing for 15 years. The story had been a massive sensation in Jindale. It was only when Amber was adopted that the frantic search finall

Chapter 6

[Third-Person POV]Meanwhile, Erin's body lay forgotten in the cold of the morgue because nobody had come to claim it.As the rain outside intensified, Darnell found himself constantly checking his watch. The minutes ticked away until he finally couldn't resist pulling out his phone. The screen displayed three missed calls, all from Erin.Earlier, right before she lost consciousness from the severe blood loss in that bathroom, she had used every last ounce of her strength to call Darnell.Naturally, because he was entirely focused on Amber, he had rejected them all. Now, Darnell's thumb hovered over her contact name. After hesitating for a long moment, he finally tapped on the button to dial. But all that came through the receiver was a cold, automated recording. "The number you have dialed is unavailable."An unexplainable panic flared in Darnell's chest.Ever since Erin had endured hell and back to return to the Huff family, she had trailed him constantly, like a terrified c

Chapter 7

[Third-Person POV]Amber froze under Darnell's sudden, roaring fury.Ever since the Huff family adopted her from the orphanage, she had lived a life where everything was handed to her, never having to worry about food, clothing, or any of life's necessities. And Darnell, her brother in name, had showered her with endless care. She was deeply addicted to this life, thoroughly savoring her status as a wealthy heiress.Having suffered enough bitter days in the orphanage, she refused to ever go back.To secure her position, she had fabricated a heart condition, ensuring the Huffs would treasure her even more.Even when Erin, the true heiress, returned, Amber figured that the family's deep-rooted affection for her over the years, combined with her fragile health, would prevent them from throwing her back into the orphanage. But greed knew no bounds. The moment she saw Darnell bring Erin back home, the defense mechanisms she had so painstakingly built completely crumbled.Darnell spo

Chapter 8

[Third-Person POV]Darnell had turned a blind eye for so long, but his tolerance had only fed Amber's escalating malice. The moment the words left his mouth, Darnell stormed out of the house without looking back.He had to find Erin before nightfall. He had to stand in front of her and say, "I'm sorry."Because of his mistake 15 years ago, he had left her with a lifelong trauma. He no longer wanted to run from it.Darnell mobilized the hospital's entire security team, ordering a floor-by-floor sweep of the building. When Erin had first come home, she suffered from constant stomach aches. She had begged Darnell multiple times to take her to a doctor. But every single time, he had brushed her off."I hired a private doctor for you, and he said your health is fine. There's absolutely nothing wrong with your medical reports. Stop fabricating illnesses just to squeeze cash out of me!"He had detested her underhanded tactics, so he had never publicly announced that the true Huff heir

Chapter 9

[Third-Person POV]"That's right!" a nurse chimed in. "She actually came into a large sum of money later, and we had scheduled her for surgery. But right before entering the operating room, she backed out."She said she had to go save someone incredibly important to her. She begged us so desperately that we had no choice but to refund the money. We never imagined…"The nurse shook her head.Darnell completely stopped breathing.Every single word they uttered felt like an indictment that he was the one who had cut off Erin's lifeline. He had failed her when she needed him most, entirely convinced that she only cared about money. But the truth was, Erin had been genuinely sick. The doctor added, "Judging by the progression of her illness, she should have had another two months to live. We don't understand why she chose to kill herself by slitting her wrist in the bathroom."She slit her wrist?Darnell's heart skipped another beat.Erin hadn't slit her wrist! She had been hurt!
