Mia POV The cast came off on a Tuesday morning. The doctor’s office smelled like antiseptic and floor wax. I sat on the exam table while they cut through the fiberglass, the saw buzzing loud enough to make my teeth ache. When the last piece fell away my leg looked pale and thin, the skin flaky, the muscle soft from weeks of disuse. I flexed my ankle experimentally. It worked. Stiff, weak, but mine again. Ryder watched from the chair in the corner, elbows on his knees. He didn’t say anything until the doctor finished the instructions—physical therapy three times a week, no running for a month, call if the swelling came back.
