After I replied to the message, a sudden knock on the door broke my thoughts. I felt my way across the room, and when I opened the door, I caught Shawn’s scent.“Why are you sitting in the dark?” he blurted out.I froze, and he, too, paused for a moment before he realized his mistake. “Right… I forgot you’re blind.”The air between us grew quiet. After a long pause, he finally spoke. “Put your hand out.”I held out my hand, bracing for pain. After all, it wouldn’t be the first time over the last few years he had hit me for Ava’s sake. Yet, the pain never came. Instead, a hot mug of chamomile tea and a box of medicine were placed in my hands. My fingers curled slightly, and an overwhelming sense of injustice and sadness washed over me. So, he actually cared whether I was freezing or not.Shawn sighed, then turned on the lights and guided me over to the bed.“Sit down,” he said. “You’re a grown girl, El. You need to start taking care of yourself. If you catch a cold, you’re th

When I woke up again, I was lying in a soft bed with an IV drip hooked to my arm. The spot where the needle entered stung a little.Just as I tried to shift around, a pair of large hands gently pinned me down. Shawn’s voice, filled with a mix of helplessness and heartache, echoed in my ear.“Don’t move. It’s not done yet.” As he spoke, he placed a warm towel over my arm. “The family doctor said this helps ease the swelling and pain. Does it feel any better?”I gave a slow nod. I couldn’t quite put into words what I was feeling right now.He let out a sigh. “I don’t know who you inherited this stubborn streak from. I’m your brother. Would it really kill you to just give in to me for once?”I pursed my dry lips. “Shawn, I…”I was just about to tell him about my upcoming trip to the Meropis for my eye treatment when he cut me off. “El, you know about the strategic marriage between the Sterling family and the Mercers, right?”I frowned in confusion. I didn’t understand why he was br

Ava choked on her words. That was a lie she had spun entirely to force me into marrying that man, and she had never expected it to come back and haunt her. In Ava’s mind, I had no right to escape the marriage, and the thought of it made her grind her teeth in pure rage. She was at a loss for words.Shawn, having spent the last few years navigating the cutthroat corporate world, reacted instantly, and his expression turned dark.“You lied to me? The eldest son of the Sterling family is still the same as before, isn’t he? Ava!” Shawn roared, his eyes wide with fury.If that was the case, then wasn’t he the one who personally sent me straight into a living hell?Shawn recalled our last conversation the night I ran away from home and how disappointed I was as I looked at him with teary eyes. His breath hitched, and it felt as though someone was crushing his heart, leaving him suffocating from the pain.Ava was too terrified to speak, but still, she didn’t look remorseful at all.“W

Shawn stared at the familiar figure in front of him, his mind spinning into a daze.Five years. He had spent five long years sending out every contact he had to search for me, and for over two thousand nights, he hadn’t slept peacefully once. Every time darkness fell, he would replay the past in his head, counting every stupid, cruel thing he had ever done. Every time he remembered, the regret hit harder. By now, that agonizing pain tortured him every single second of the day. That was until yesterday, when he had accidentally caught a glimpse of me online. Even though it was just a blurry photo of someone’s back posted on social media, he still flew out immediately. He had chased down countless false leads over the years, so honestly, he hadn’t dared to hold out much hope this time either. Yet right now, the person he had longed for was standing in front of him, whole and unharmed. The sheer emotion of it, like recovering a priceless treasure he thought was lost forever, was enou
