Chapter 1

I looked at the message and almost laughed at the sheer audacity of it. How could there be someone who took advantage of others so brazenly?I simply ignored it.Unexpectedly, Xenia Salter walked right up to my workstation and tapped on my partition. "I'm pregnant and need a private car for transportation. I think your car is quite good. Since you have to go home after work anyway, it wouldn't be a hassle for you to give me a ride on the way."After a pause, she added matter-of-factly, "By the way, you have to leave work at 5pm. I also need to rush home to cook for my husband."Her attitude was disgusting.I usually had a driver for my outings. Who the hell was she, and what right did she have to make me her driver? Besides, I did not even know where she lived, so how could it be "on the way"?Then I suddenly remembered that she was the company's HR; she must have checked the home address I filled in when I joined the company. Not wanting to get into an argument, I directly said

"Alex! Stop shouting! Xenia is notorious for being difficult in our company. She has good connections with the higher-ups and her family holds influence here. You won't get anywhere by arguing with her!"He glanced at my car and spoke earnestly. "Hear me out. Just give her a ride tonight. Just consider yourself unlucky. Just say your car broke down and you sent it for repair tomorrow. Take the subway for a few days and avoid her. If you can't beat her, just steer clear of her."Why should I need anyone's permission to drive my own car? Why should I have to pretend to be poor or even pretend my car broke down just to avoid her? This absurdity made my anger surge straight to my head."Thanks, but no thanks." I shook his hand away, my tone unprecedentedly firm.I walked back to the car door and looked at the person sitting calmly inside, saying clearly, "Xenia, I'm telling you one last time. Get out of the car. Otherwise, I'll call the police right away. "I'll sue you for illegally

The group exchanged glances and smiled knowingly.I walked straight over. "Are you done? "Their laughter abruptly stopped and they turned to look at me.I glanced at Xenia and the others. "I heard every word you just said. The statements about me having a 'sugar daddy', 'shady', and 'having an infectious disease' — who among you has evidence? Photos? Audio recordings? Or proof?"Xenia gave me a sideways glance. "Oh, panicking? If you don't want people to find out, don't do it. You're an intern driving a nice car, yet people can't even talk about you?"I stared at her. "Spreading rumors without evidence is defamation. I can sue you.""Sue me?" Xenia seemed to have heard the most ridiculous joke. She crossed her arms. "Alex, haven't you figured out the situation yet? I'm the HR! I decide who joins the company and passes their internship! You want to sue me?" She stepped forward, her finger almost touching my nose."Let me tell you, your internship evaluation is up to me. If I s

"What a coincidence, huh?" I looked at the security captain. The police officer examined the scratch, and then the janitor lady, before saying to me, "Sir, this scratch doesn't seem to be the result of an accidental scratch, but there's no evidence. She looks troubled and can't afford to compensate you. How about you handle it by yourself through insurance?"I knew I could not do anything without evidence, so I nodded. The police officer reminded us to take care and left.As soon as the police car left, Xenia immediately came up to me, looking smug. "Alex, do you admit defeat now? I told you that every company has its rules. Anyone who offends me will face a miserable end. Did you think that was all?"She took another step closer. "I've submitted your attendance record. Late arrivals, early departures, poor performance, and you failed your probation. You don't have to come tomorrow. You're fired."I retorted, "You don't have the right to fire me. You're just the HR. The appointme

I called Andrew and briefly explained the situation.Andrew sneered on the other end of the line. "Oh, using pregnancy as a free pass? Have you verified it?""I have. She's not pregnant at all. Last month, she got food poisoning and went to the obstetrics department for an examination. The doctor told her it was gastroenteritis. She didn't believe it and pointed to her swollen belly, saying it was obviously bigger. "The doctor was speechless and said it was fat. She even caused a scene at the obstetrics department over this."Andrew chuckled. "God damn, I love people who enjoy digging their own graves. Send me the address and I'll have some fun with her tomorrow."The next morning, I stood at the apartment entrance.Andrew parked a bright orange modified sports car on the roadside, with the engine roaring softly.Xenia stepped out right on time, and her eyes lit up once she saw the car. "Nice car. Better than yesterday's. "She walked around the car for half a circle, opened t

Just then, the elevator door opened with a ding.A middle-aged man in a well-dressed suit and wearing gold-rimmed glasses stepped out.The noisy office area instantly fell silent.Kirk saw the man approaching, and the arrogant expression on his face instantly froze. The very next second, he pretty much crawled toward him, his waist bent at a 90-degree angle. "Mr. Jarvis! Why... Why are you here? Are there any instructions from the chairman?" It was my father's personal secretary, Raymond. He did not even glance at the fawning Kirk. His gaze turned to me instead. Then, as everyone looked in astonishment, bowing slightly. His tone was respectful. "Mr. Alex, you've suffered. Mr. Rockman asked me to assist you with the issues at this branch company."Kirk instantly froze. "Mr. Alex? Mr. Jarvis, why are you so polite to him?" Mr. Jarvis smiled calmly. "Mr. Alex is Mr. Rockman's only son."The color on Kirk's face vanished completely. "I... I didn't know! I really didn't know his

Phillip turned to the pale-faced Kirk and shouted, "Uncle Kirk! Are you just going to watch us suffer?"Kirk's face turned red and then pale again, and his forehead was covered in cold sweat. He looked at Xenia rolling on the ground, then at me, and then the livid Raymond. Kirk knew his position as the general manager was in jeopardy. He gritted his teeth and suddenly pointed at me, raising his voice even more. "Even if you're Mr. Alex, you can't bully others with your authority! "You drove dangerously in order to scare a pregnant colleague and caused her to miscarry. This is a fact! Everyone saw it! No matter how high your status is, you can't mistreat employees! You must give us an explanation!"The colleagues around us had already gathered here. Many were filming with their phones and whispering.Gazes filled with curiosity and condemnation were all fixed on me.I looked at Xenia rolling on the ground and asked, "Xenia, are you sure you're pregnant? Are you sure I caused the

"I... I have a stomachache... I'll go to the hospital first..." She tried to run away."Stop!" An older police officer stopped her, his voice stern. "Ms. Salter, based on the current evidence, you are suspected of falsifying your pregnancy and using it as an excuse to extort money from your colleague. Please come with us to the police station for investigation.""No! I won't go!"Xenia screamed. She suddenly turned to me, her face no longer showing the arrogance it had just moments ago. Only fear and pleading remained. "Alex! Alex, I was wrong! I really was wrong! I shouldn't have falsely accused you! I shouldn't have tried to take advantage of you! Since I'm a pregnant woman... No, since I was momentarily confused, spare me this time! I will never do it again! I’m sorry! I’ll do anything!"She spoke and actually attempted to reach out to me.I turned sideways to avoid her. "Spare me your apology. Don't you like to follow the rules? Then allow the police officers to explain the

I glanced around and they immediately forced out more friendly smiles. Some nodded, some waved and a few brave ones even came over with coffee."Have some coffee! I ground it fresh this morning, with milk but no sugar. I remember how you like your coffee!""Here is some homemade pastry my family made. Try it!""Mr. Alex, you look good today!"I did not stop. I walked to my workstation and found the table was cleaned, and there was a small pot of green ivy on it.My colleague from the next workstation immediately leaned over and whispered, "I... I saw your table empty and added a pot of plants to purify the air."Throughout the morning, my internal phone calls and internal network communications did not stop. This manager said he wanted to report his work, a supervisor wanted me to "guide" him, and even a few of the "old-timers" who usually looked down upon others indirectly tried to invite me to a meal to "apologize".I ignored them, only sending an all-staff announcement throu
