Chapter 1

I didn't pick up the money, and I didn't call the police.Instead, I was lying on the carpet, letting tears stream from the corners of my eyes.My phone was pressed against my chest, but the chat window never lit up with a new message.I think I'd been dumped.I was drowning in regret. If I'd known, I never would have pushed him to meet.I turned my head and happened to see the white bat, also unconscious on the floor. It had shrunk considerably from its terrifying massive form, its wings draped limply on the ground. It looked like a snowball that had been left out in the rain.My fear finally caught up with me, slow and heavy. How could a bat this big exist in the real world? And one that fell from the sky carrying gold and jewels?I closed my eyes and whispered to myself."It has to be a dream."Leah, it's okay. Tomorrow when you wake up, the bat will be gone, the living room will be back to normal, and your Nightfall will come back to you."The next morning, something cool and soft

Chapter 2

The only reason I managed to accept any of this was that vampires were how I'd met my online boyfriend in the first place.I was a devoted reader of The Bat and the Rose, a dark romance comic. It told the story of a young vampire who took the form of a small white bat and appeared at a human girl's window, learning to love her with clumsy devotion. The art was exquisite, the panels beautiful and romantic.I was hooked by the second chapter.Every morning, the first thing I did was beg for updates."Eli is so handsome, so gentle, so rich!""I love it, I love it, I want to smother him in kisses, I want to marry him!""Please update soon, or I'll screenshot the first few chapters and make them my phone wallpaper, my desktop background, and my chat backdrop so the entire world can see how much I love your little vampire!"Maybe my sincerity got through. The author replied.Just one word."Okay."I begged for updates every day. He updated every day. Before long, we got to know each other.H

That night, I was sound asleep.A whisper of cool air brushed across my face.I opened my eyes groggily. The little bat was lying on the pillow beside me, curled into a tight ball, with one wing draped over my shoulder.Patting me. Gently. Again and again. Was it trying to soothe me like a child?I snorted out a laugh.I reached over and poked its round little belly."Eli, I just thought of something."In the comic, you're male... um, a male vampire?"Never mind. The point is, in the comic you're a guy, but I still don't actually know what gender this bat version of you is."I also don't know how old you are. You're not older than me, are you? Like one of those centuries-old vampires who still look young?"I opened a search engine."How to determine a bat's gender and age."The results told me: Do not handle bats without professional training. Contact your local wildlife authority.I tossed my phone aside. If I could contact the authorities, would I be hiding a diamond-dropping bat in

Chapter 4

Eli had been living in my apartment for three days. His fur was getting dusty.I'd read up on it. Bats shouldn't be bathed carelessly, and their wings absolutely couldn't get chilled. So I only dared to wipe down his fur with warm, damp towels. He lay obediently on a towel, watching me with curiosity at first. The moment I wiped near the base of his wings, he froze, then thrashed like a ball of cotton yanked out of water.Wet towels flew everywhere, and he made a frantic gurgling sound.I was focused on my task when my fingertip accidentally brushed a faint red mark beneath his left wing. The mark looked like a tiny blood-colored moon.Eli let out a sharp cry and bolted. His claws skidded across the tiles, and he tumbled his way through the bathroom door.I chased after him. Eli was already gone, leaving behind only a trail of scattered water drops and a few white tufts of fur.The front door hung wide open.I didn't even stop to put on shoes before running out.I was deciding between

Chapter 5

The motion-sensor light in the stairwell clicked on.Harsh white light fell on a man half-kneeling on the floor. One hand braced against the wall, the other pressed against his chest.Black hair clung wet to his forehead. His face was pale to the point of translucence, with a trace of blood at the corner of his lips.I didn't have time to worry about him. My first question came out in a rush. "Did you just see a little white bat run in here? About eight inches, pointy ears, very white, cries a lot."The man's mouth twitched. He squeezed the words out through his teeth. "...I did.""Where?""Flew off.""Downstairs or up?"He raised a hand and pointed below.I bolted for the stairs without a second thought.I'd barely taken one step when something grabbed my ankle.I shook my foot frantically. "Let go! I need to find it! It's so small. If anyone sees it, they'll freak out. They might even think it's diseased and call animal control to take it away!""Don't chase him."His voice was urgen

Chapter 6

Eli vanished completely.Along with Nightfall. If not for the twenty antique gold coins still tucked inside the little nest I'd made for the bat, I would have believed I'd lost my mind.I couldn't muster the energy to do anything. I stayed home and slept for days.I couldn't figure out where things had gone wrong. If I hadn't pressured my online boyfriend to meet.If I hadn't threatened to break up over it.Would we still be together right now, saying good morning and good night, chatting about whatever random thing came to mind?I turned it over and over in my head, but I couldn't find an answer.Nora couldn't reach me, so she stormed straight over to my place. She kicked my bedroom door open and hauled me out of bed."Leah! It's one guy. One! You're not eating, you're not going out. You hopeless romantic!"She shoved a piece of fried chicken into my mouth.I chewed. And chewed. And chewed."I love him."She handed me a soda.I slurped. And slurped. And slurped."He and his bat both v

Chapter 7

Nora took me to an underground bar.It was tucked at the end of a narrow alley in the old quarter, a black iron lantern hanging by the entrance, low jazz and dim red light inside. She led me expertly into a private room. She clapped her hands, and a line of shirtless male dancers filed in.I stared at their arms, chests, and abs. I felt absolutely nothing. What flashed through my mind instead was Eli soaking wet in the stairwell.I shook my head, trying to shake him loose.Leah, how could you have impure thoughts about someone's bat form?Nora saw I was still down and worked overtime trying to get the party going.I really wasn't in the mood. All I could do was drink.I drank until my head was spinning and staggered toward the bathroom.Just outside the door, a strikingly handsome man stepped into my path.He wore a long black coat, and his eyes were the same green as Eli's, only colder and more irritated."Hold on. Take a call first."I waved him off. "Not interested."I really needed

Chapter 8

A gust of cold wind swept past, laced with moonlight. When I opened my eyes again, Samuel and I stood at the edge of a dark pine forest.Beneath our feet was damp, soft grass. In the distance rose an old manor draped in climbing roses.Spires, stained-glass windows, iron gates, gargoyles, and countless lights flickering to life in the darkness. The air smelled of roses, rain, and a faint trace of blood.I wasn't hurt.My legs were just a little shaky when I stood.Everyone passing by was deathly pale. Some carried black umbrellas, some wore gloves, some had crows perched on their shoulders, and tiny bat ears peeked out of more than one collar.Occasionally, someone dissolved into a dark blur across the rooftops before resuming human form.So the comic had been real all along. The vampires who noticed me didn't seem terribly surprised at the sight of a human.Their gazes lingered just a beat longer, carrying restrained curiosity and appraisal.Samuel noticed my confusion and explained.

Chapter 9

Eli didn't come back with me.He was still a young vampire, only recently come of age.His rushed visit had disrupted the rhythm of his manifestation phase. What should have taken just one month to stabilize his human form now required at least a year. The blood pool and moonlight corridor in the Valen family castle could speed his recovery. To see me as soon as possible and live with me, he chose to stay behind and submit to their rules and training. We went back to our online relationship.Everything was as sweet as before. We shared our days, said goodnight, and talked about anything and everything. The only difference was that now I knew the person on the other side of the screen wasn't some mysterious artist or some eccentric rich kid.He was a little vampire who could cry hard enough to shake his own wings over a single word from me.Three more months, and I'd finally get to see my gorgeous guy. Then holding hands, stealing kisses, none of it would be off the table.I was never g
