Chapter 1

I did not walk through the door and turned away to leave. It took 20 minutes after I went downstairs before Erica Livingston realized I was gone. [Where did you go? Everyone is in their seats. Is this all because of a pair of house slippers?]I did not reply and just sat in the hospital while I looked down at my leg. Blood was seeping through the bandage, and it hurt. Three days ago, Erica and I were inspecting a construction site when I was hurt by shards of broken glass. When I fell, Erica was the person closest to me, but she did not even bother to help me up. "Remember to submit the application for your medical leave to make it official."That was the only thing she told me that day.She had been giving me the same attitude for the past three years. She would maintain her distance in public and keep proper boundaries between us.However, when Ryan Strobe had a splinter in his finger, everyone watched as Erica tended to his wound personally and took ten minutes to bandage it

Chapter 2

The next day, I drafted my resignation to submit to the company. When I stepped into the office, I heard everyone gossiping. "Did you hear about it? Ms. Livingston has approved Ryan to take on the role of department manager!""How does an assistant become a manager so easily? What sort of connections does he have?""What else is there? It's obvious that he's Ms. Livingston's boyfriend!"An employee said in a hushed tone, "Did you know? Once I entered Ms. Livingston's office, I saw Ryan pick up her cup and drink from it!""Seriously? I thought Ms. Livingston was anal about sharing food and drinks."While they gossiped enthusiastically, I gulped down the water from my cup, feeling bitterness in my throat. The last time I used her cup by accident, she went off on me, reprimanding me for making such an amateur mistake. After that, she prepared disposable cups right away for her office to prevent me from 'crossing the line' again."Hunter, I need to treat you the same as everyone

Chapter 3

Erica kept texting continuously for the next three hours, asking me who I was meeting in some of the texts while accusing me of being deluded in her other texts. She told me that she would not change her mind no matter what excuses I gave.[Where would you go without me? Stop making things difficult for Ryan. I promise I'll promote you the next time an opportunity comes up.]When she was texting me this, I was having dinner with the team leader of an overseas company who had traveled from afar to meet me. I had booked my flight ticket for the next week after dinner. The company's group chat kept buzzing the entire night with everyone sharing pictures of Erica and Ryan's 'date'. Erica, who had always found it necessary to be cautious when watching a movie with me, would buy separate tickets for us. One ticket would be in the last row, and the other would be in the first row. Yet, in the pictures, she was seated openly with Ryan in a couple's seat. Both were leaning close to each ot

Chapter 4

I did not leave the company right away because I still had a project that I was working on. The project would decide the annual bonus of my team, and I did not want to let my teammates down by walking away from it.However, one day before the contract was signed, I entered the office to see everyone around my desk."Mr. Silverman is here!" Someone shouted, and the others turned to look at me with disgust in their eyes."Why did you plagiarize Ryan's work, Hunter?" It was Erica who stood up from behind my computer. "This is Ryan's hard work, and you stole it to make your project look good?"She looked disappointed. "Do you have any professional ethics?"I was thunderstruck, and I dashed forward in disbelief to check the document. One document belonged to Ryan, and the other was in my file, which I clicked into. The timestamp for both documents was only one day apart, while mine was a day later than Ryan's."This is impossible!" I looked up to say. "I was the one who wrote this pro

Chapter 5

"Why is there so much garbage in your living room, Erica?"Erica's best friends walked into her house, looking puzzled."There's a note here…""Returning these to their owner?" one of her best friends read it out loud."Are you really breaking up with your young boyfriend?""Ryan has a pretty good temper. What did you do to make him return all of these to you?""No wonder you got our help to try and win him back."Everyone started laughing except for Erica, who seemed to be in a daze. She stood in the middle of her best friends, looking pale. "Don't touch it!" Someone reached out for the garbage bag, but Erica made a mad dash toward it and pushed her friend away. "This isn't possible. It's not possible…"Her mind was in a mess, and she was shuddering while staring at the garbage bag.It was not just the gifts. I had also returned everything that had anything remotely to do with her. At the very top was a pair of bracelets we got each other on the first day we got together.

Chapter 6

Erica started to panic. She never expected me to really leave her."Headquarters? How did he get in touch with headquarters?""It's because the person who asked him to transfer was the CEO of his company. He called our CEO at our headquarters to expedite Hunter Silverman's resignation," Erica's secretary explained cautiously. "They've been trying to poach him for a long time because he did an excellent job on the last project, which caught the attention of many companies."Erica took out her phone and started calling me like crazy, but of course, none of her calls got through. I had blocked her, and when she tried to ask my friends about my whereabouts, everyone kept silent."You're looking for Hunter? What's your relationship to him?""Hunter told me that you've broken up. Even if you hadn't broken up with him, you've never once treated him as your boyfriend, have you?""Where were you when he was sick and admitted to the hospital?""Haven't you always wanted to keep your dista

Chapter 7

Every moment out of the country felt like freedom to me. I did not need to worry about any red tape in my new company, and I had a healthy relationship with my boss. Most importantly, he appreciated all the hard work I had put into the company. "Are you telling me that you've never been promoted after working for so many years at your previous company?"My colleagues from my new company were all shocked to find out about my past working experience."How is that possible?""Did your previous boss treat you badly, or did you offend her?" "Or is there something there that made you stay behind, and willingly took whatever was thrown to you?"All I did was smile at their questions and say nothing. Maybe there once was something that made me stay.Erica had gone to extreme measures to make sure that no one knew about us, and did not give me any opportunities to be promoted. As for me, I had accepted everything willingly. When she confessed her love to me, her only request was tha

Chapter 8

When Erica found me, I had just finished work for the day. She was waiting for me in the underground parking lot, and she dashed up to hold my hand the moment she spotted me. "Hunter, can we talk?"It had been a few months since we last met, and she had lost a lot of weight. I did not reject her request and asked her to get into my car. After that, I drove to another district."Wait… You don't live in this area, do you?" Erica asked carefully after I had driven a while. I did not reply until I parked my car and entered an elevator. "I came back to pick up an urgent document."The door opened, and a gentle-looking woman was standing in the living room, smiling at me. "This is Carla Simmons, my girlfriend," I introduced her to Erica."What did you just say?" Erica grabbed my hand in disbelief. "Your girlfriend? But it's only been less than six months…"I flung her hand away. "What does that matter? We've been living together for a week, and it only took one month for us to be of
