Chapter 1

The moment the platter hit the floor, the whole ballroom went silent.Vivian stumbled back two steps, the hand she'd raised to push the door frozen in midair. She glared at me. "Chloe, have you lost your mind?"I clung to the nursing room door handle, my back pressed hard against the door.In my last life it happened exactly this way. My mother went to change out of the blouse Noah had spit up on, and while she was gone, Vivian pushed into the nursing room and carried him straight out.He never came back.My mother searched every place she could think of, but the security footage from the ballroom had been destroyed on purpose, and the guests were all busy talking. Nobody noticed when he had been taken.I was the only witness, but the police dismissed my statement because I was too young. The police worked the case for three months, turned up nothing, and finally closed it.My mother lost her mind, and six months later she died in a car accident. My father quit his job and searched for

Chapter 2

A server swept up the broken ceramic outside the nursing room door while my mother pulled me aside and crouched down. "Chloe, did something happen?"I grabbed her hand. "Mom, you can't let Vivian anywhere near Noah."She went still for a second, then smiled and nodded. "Okay."Right after that, someone beside us spoke up. "One kid throws a fit and you go along with it? It's normal for family to want to hold the baby."I stepped in front of my mother. "So you'd be fine with somebody carrying your baby off into a crowd?"She had nothing to say to that.I kept my eyes on her. "And my brother is only a month old. If someone who's been drinking picks him up and falls, then what?"Someone nodded. "You shouldn't pick up a baby after you've been drinking."Vivian smiled. "You're right. I didn't think it through. I'll sober up before I come back."Then she turned and walked away.I didn't let myself relax, because she had done the same thing in my last life. She looked like she had given up, an

Chapter 3

Someone jumped in right away. "There's a limit to acting out. Look how hungry he is, and you still won't let her feed him?"I ignored her and ran straight to the front desk.A woman in her forties stood behind the desk: the manager, Evelyn Harper, who had been watching from nearby."Ma'am, is there another room? One that locks from the inside, with a camera outside the door."Evelyn looked over at my mother and Noah, then bent down. "Is this about that woman?"I nodded. "She's trying to steal my brother."Evelyn didn't ask anything else. She handed me a key card right away. "There's a small private room on the third floor that we don't open to the public. A camera faces the door, and the door has a deadbolt. I'll take you up."My mother followed her upstairs. I stayed glued to her side and kept calling my father. The first call rang out. So did the second. The third was declined after two rings.I didn't hesitate. I switched on my smartwatch and hit speed dial. The watch was a birthday

Chapter 4

My mother's arms clamped tight around Noah. I saw it and rushed to the door. "If the photo can wait until my mom is ready, then why can't she carry him down herself?"There was no sound outside, but I knew Vivian hadn't gone anywhere.I lifted my wrist and saw that the call to my father was still connected, so I shouted at the door again, "Aunt Vivian, why do you keep following my mom around? Why do you have to take Noah away?"While I kept her talking, my mother finished straightening her clothes. She stood up with Noah and came to stand behind me.Right then the hallway lights went out, and the room went dark a second later. My mother clutched Noah tighter. The server called through the door. "Please don't panic. The breaker on the third floor must have tripped. I'll go check it."Cold sweat ran down my back.In my last life, before that footage was destroyed, the power had tripped for a short while too.And then the footage was gone. The power had tripped again, and I knew what it m

Chapter 5

The room was so quiet that all I could hear was Noah crying.Vivian didn't come at us right away. First she slipped the key card into her pocket, then she slowly took off her coat and draped it over the back of a chair. She pulled out a chair and sat down. She looked first at Noah, crying in my mother's arms, then raised her eyes to my mother. "Hand him over."My mother held him tight and backed toward the door, and Vivian made no move to stop her.I saw what she was doing and quickly tugged my mother away from the door. "Mom, don't go near it. She's got someone out there."My mother froze where she stood.Vivian smiled. "So clever. Too bad. No matter how clever you are, you're still just a teenager."She took a step forward. "You can't stop me."I didn't say anything. I grabbed the porcelain vase off the table and threw it at her.The vase struck her shoulder, and she crouched in pain. I snatched up a shard from the broken vase and pointed it at her.She looked up at me, and that was

Chapter 6

Vivian saw the door shuddering under the blows and panicked. She spun around and ran behind the storage cabinet, trying to escape through the little door she'd used to get in.But the moment she opened it, Evelyn and a security guard were standing there, blocking her escape.Evelyn raised her phone. "Ma'am, I recorded everything you just said."Vivian froze, and a second later the door to the room burst open.My father's eyes were red enough to frighten me when he came in.He looked at my mother first, then at Noah in her arms, and last at me on the floor. He was shaking all over. He came to me, gathered me up, and held me. "I'm sorry, Chloe. I got here too late."I didn't say anything. I just held on to the watch with its shattered screen and cried and cried. My mother held Noah, her voice trembling. "Call the police. She tried to steal our son, and she hurt our daughter!"My father nodded and took out his phone.Vivian rushed over to stop him. "I only wanted to hold the baby. Maybe I

Chapter 7

My father didn't look at her again. He took off his coat and put it around my mother's shoulders. Some color came back into my mother's face as she held Noah, but her body still wouldn't stop shaking. She handed Noah to my father and rushed over to hug me. "Chloe, does it hurt?"I shook my head. "It doesn't hurt."The police took brief statements from us.Evelyn turned over the hallway footage and the electrical-room footage. The police also took the recording from my smartwatch. My father tried to comfort my mother. "I already called a lawyer. No amount of pleading is going to help her. The police got a warrant to search her phone, and they found chat logs with a child-trafficking ring."The welcome party had fallen apart. Half-eaten food still covered the tables. The guests whispered among themselves, but nobody dared call it a misunderstanding anymore. My mother and I were taken to the hospital to have our injuries documented.Noah was examined too, and the doctor said he was only f

Chapter 8

The police found out that this wasn't the first time Vivian had tried to take a child. Her phone was full of chat logs. They also confirmed that she had been in contact with a child trafficking ring for two years. One of those messages mentioned the welcome party."A one-month-old is the easiest to snatch. These parties are crowded and chaotic. Once the nursing room door closes, who's going to notice?"The police also said Vivian had known ahead of time that the venue had a side door off the kitchen. Her plan was to carry the baby out of the nursing room, slip out through that kitchen door, and hand him off to a buyer. She had even brought a garbage bag to carry him in, so if anyone saw her, she could claim she was taking out the kitchen trash. After that, the case came together piece by piece. The hotel cameras had caught Vivian circling the nursing room again and again. The electrical room camera had caught her at the breaker. The smartwatch had recorded her threatening my mother.Ev

Chapter 9

On Noah's first birthday, my parents didn't invite a crowd. They invited only the people we were truly close to and booked a small restaurant near our house.A small sign was taped to the door: "Please respect the mother and baby. Don't push drinks, stir up a scene, or pick up the baby without permission."I stood in the doorway and looked at it for a long time.A lot had changed that year.My father stopped playing along at booze-soaked social events. If anyone tried to pressure him into drinking at a party, he simply walked out.My mother changed too. She used to be terrified of relatives disliking her. Now if anyone brought up Vivian, she shot back on the spot. "Criminals don't deserve sympathy, and they don't deserve forgiveness."She never said so, but I noticed signs of post-traumatic stress.Closed rooms frightened her. When a door shut, the color drained out of her face. When Noah cried hard, her hands shook. My father noticed too and took her to a therapist.Through the whole

Chapter 10

Later my mother opened a child-safety center with a few other parents of trafficked children. The center was small, right beside the community center.Half of it ran anti-abduction training for children. The other half offered counseling and help to families with missing children. The door was never locked from the outside. There was a line written on the wall. "A child is not an object to be fought over or poked at for fun. A child can say no, and asking for help is never something to be ashamed of."My mother wrote that line herself.I often went to the center to do my homework after school.By the time Noah was three, he could wobble over and hand me a cookie. He pushed it into my hand and said very seriously, "Chloe, eat."I teased him. "Mom says those are for little kids."He hid the cookie behind his back. "Then Chloe is a little kid too."My mother laughed behind the counter. My father came by after work to pick her up, carrying the cake she liked.Seeing the cake still made som
