Chapter 1

On the day the special admissions list was announced, Zoey Shenton stood in the center of the assembly room. Our principal, Josiah Manson, had just finished announcing her name, and the applause had not yet died down when she rose to her feet."Mr. Manson, Ms. Williams, I'd like to give up this spot," she said. The assembly room fell silent. Our homeroom teacher, Elena Williams, looked serious. She said, "Zoey, just sit down first. This is no laughing matter."Yet, Zoey didn't listen to Ms. Williams. She wore a faded school uniform jacket, and her long hair was in a low ponytail. Her expression was earnest as she replied, "I'm not joking around. Austin University is something countless students dream of attending. I know how valuable this opportunity is. But I can't accept it."Harper Collins, the head of academic affairs, was stunned. She asked, "Why?"Zoey looked down. Her voice wasn't loud, but it was clear enough for everyone to hear. "I didn't work hard for all these years

I thought Zoey would be happy. Of course, she was. She just wanted everyone to know that she wasn't someone who would take advantage of this special treatment. She wanted everyone to beg her not to be stubborn. She wanted them to tell her to accept the opportunity for the sake of the school, her teachers, and her parents. She wanted them to convince her to reluctantly take an opportunity that countless others would give anything for.As expected, Ms. Williams tried to persuade her. "Zoey, don't be rash. This isn't about avoiding the college entrance exam. You earned this opportunity through your own efforts."Zoey looked down and said sadly, "Ms. Williams, I know you mean well, but this just doesn't sit right with me."Ms. Collins also chimed in, "Not everyone can have this spot. If you give it up, the school will have to contact Austin University."Zoey bit her lip sadly. "If my decision causes trouble for the school, I'll take responsibility for it."The moment she said that,

Everyone looked over at Zoey. She then realized she had overreacted and immediately softened her tone. "I just mean that Nina might not be ready yet. She's always said she wants to take the college entrance exam to prove herself. If she suddenly accepts a direct admission now, could it be because she's too nervous and wants to avoid the exam?"I almost laughed out loud at her words. She really knew how to get under someone else's skin.In my third year in school, I had done poorly on my first major exam and only came in seventh in my grade.Back then, she patted my shoulder and comforted me, "Nina, it's okay. You just don't handle pressure well."After that, quite a few people in our grade knew that I was good at studying, but I tended to fall apart during major exams. Little did they know that the day before that exam, Zoey had borrowed my notebook and promised to return it that night. She didn't give it back to me until ten minutes before the exam. She said apologetically, "So

When I saw Zoey's comment, I chuckled. So, she still believed she deserved that admission spot. It was just temporarily in my hands. Not long after, she sent me a message. "Nina, are you asleep?"I replied to her. "No."She quickly sent a long message. "I didn't mean to blame you for what happened in the assembly room today. I just thought that accepting that spot so suddenly might have been a bit impulsive. "I know you've been under a lot of pressure lately, and I know you really want to beat me at least once. But a recommended admission isn't something to take lightly. Are you really going to give up the college entrance exam just because your pride got the better of you for a moment?"I stared at the screen, feeling disgusted at her words. She was always like this. She always spoke gently, as if she were thinking of others. Yet, every word made me feel smaller.I replied, "Zoey, I didn't accept the offer to beat you. I did it for myself."She remained silent for a long tim

The class went silent. I looked up at Ms. Williams.Ms. Williams frowned and urged me, "Are you coming or not? Austin University has already approved your application and will pass the offer on to you. You need to sign the confirmation form accepting the admission."The voices in the classroom were cut off. Winnie's smile also froze on her face. Zoey's outstretched hand also froze in midair.Ms. Williams looked at her and added, "Zoey, come along. There's one section on the withdrawal confirmation you signed yesterday that still needs your signature. We need it for the records."As soon as she said that, the entire classroom went completely silent. Those who had just insisted that the spot rightfully belonged to Zoey lowered their heads one by one, barely daring to breathe.I stood up and picked up my pen. As I passed by Zoey, I watched the color slowly drain from her face.I paused for a moment. My voice wasn't loud, but it was loud enough for everyone in the front rows to hea

Ms. Williams went silent for a few moments. Then, she replied, "No. The paperwork has already been submitted once, and Austin University has already given its official response. This isn't something the school can change on its own."After she finished writing, Ms. Collins collected the two documents. "All right. You two can go back to class now."I turned to leave. However, Zoey suddenly called out to me. "Nina!"I stopped walking. She looked at me in tears. Her voice sounded so soft, as if she had suffered a terrible injustice. "Are you happy now?"I looked at her and retorted, "Why can't I be happy? I didn't steal, cheat, or take the spot by force. I followed the rules and took the opportunity you gave up. Of course, I'm happy."Zoey almost lost her composure at my words. Yet, I didn't spare her another glance. I pushed the door open and walked out. When I returned to the classroom, everyone fell silent. They immediately looked at me.Winnie was the first to stand up. She ask

"You know how important that spot is to me," Zoey said.I looked at her, finding her words amusing. I asked, "Important? Didn't you say that there was no point getting into Austin University like that? You said truly outstanding people should take the college entrance exam and prove themselves fair and square."Zoey's expression stiffened. Then, she said defensively, "I only said that in the heat of the moment. I just wanted Ms. Williams to take me seriously. I never thought you'd actually step in."She then sobbed, "Nina, please give the spot back to me."I looked at her calmly and said, "Give it back? What proof do you have that it's still yours?"Tears streamed down her face as she asked, "Aren't we friends? You used to always let me have my way."Those words finally shattered the last shred of affection I still had for her.I had given in to her many times. When it came to signing up for competitions, she said she needed the opportunity more, so I gave it to her. When the

Mr. Manson walked into the office. Behind him was a middle-aged man. He wore a dark coat and carried a document folder.Ms. Sutton immediately stood up. "Mr. Hodges."Mr. Hodges was from Austin University's admissions team.Zoey also recognized him. Her eyes immediately lit up. It was as if she had found someone who could help her. She hurriedly stood up, her voice trembling with emotion. "Mr. Hodges, do you remember me? I'm Zoey Shenton."Mr. Hodges nodded. "I do. You did very well in the competition."Tears immediately welled up in Zoey's eyes. "Mr. Hodges, I only gave up the admissions offer on impulse. I take back my decision. I really want to go to Austin University."Everyone in the office looked at Mr. Hodges.Mrs. Shenton chimed in, "Mr. Hodges, you already know how outstanding Zoey is. You should understand that she's the perfect candidate for this spot. Nina only got it because the offer was passed down to her. She's not as good as Zoey."Mr. Hodges didn't answer imme

I looked at Zoey and said, "I didn't do anything. You threw away your chance first. And now, you want me to hand it back to you on a silver platter?"She froze at my words.I continued, "Zoey Shenton, I won't yield to you again."She stared at me with tears in her eyes, as if she hadn't expected me to say that. For the first time, I realized that saying no was actually so easy. The next day, the school posted the final recommended admission list on the bulletin board."Austin University Recommended Admission: Nina Goulding" was written in fine print, with the school's seal stamped across it.A crowd had gathered around the board. Winnie was there too. When she saw me approaching, she instinctively took a step back. The people who had claimed that I wasn't capable of holding on to the opportunity couldn't bring themselves to look me in the eye.Someone whispered, "Nina, congratulations."I nodded in acknowledgment. "Thank you."Someone else laughed awkwardly, "We only knew what
